OBITUARIES  ...for the DURHAM REGION

 

 

 

 

  

 

 

 

 

 

 

BENDER, Emma   -  Emma Bender passed away peacefully on December 24, 2022, at the Uxbridge Cottage Hospital at 95 years old.

 

She was born in Lithuania, one of nine children. 

As a refugee in Germany in WW2, she met and married Hermann Bender, also a Lithuanian, in 1949. 

Six years later, they immigrated to Toronto with two children and two more children were born in Canada.

 

She was a caring mother and skilled homemaker, sewing the children’s clothing including her daughters’ wedding dresses.

 

Emma was raised in the Lutheran church and found comfort in attending the Lithuanian and German services. In her retirement, she enjoyed travelling and social activities, especially Bingo. 

 

Emma had an enthusiastic personality and a smile that could light up a room.

 

She is predeceased by her husband Hermann, daughter Erika, son Peter and grandson Benjamin.

She is survived by her daughters Helga of Calgary and Zina (Ted) of Uxbridge, daughter-in-law Ann of Trent Lakes. 

 

Beloved Oma to five grandchildren Colleen, Shannon, Sydney, Alicia and Alex and four great-grandchildren Avery, Olivia, Rachel and Emmerson who brought great joy to her later years.

 

She will be dearly missed.

A funeral for Emma will take place on January 10, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at Low and Low Funeral Home, 23 Main Street South, Uxbridge. Public viewing at 12:00 p.m.   A reception will follow at the home of Zina & Ted Bolak, 12 Confederation Drive, Uxbridge L9P 1Z4.  A private family burial will take place on January 11, 2023 at the Beechwood Cemetery Toronto.

 

Memorial donations to the Thornhill Lutheran Church, would be appreciated by the family.
