Harris BettyHARRIS, Betty Doreen Harris  -

August 18, 1927 - March 2, 2023

Betty was an incredibly special and unique person. She was strong and kind and was loved by everyone who knew her.

Predeceased by her parents Franklin “Bucky” and Rhoda, her brother William “Bill”, sister-in-law Gertrude Evelyn and niece Diane.

Beloved sister of Stuart and sister-in-law to Betty.

Cherished Aunt to Susan (Tom, deceased), Kathryn (Anthony), Sandra and Stephen. Loved by her great-nephews and great-niece and their spouses and their children, her great-great nephews and nieces and many other extended family members and friends who will miss her terribly.

Betty was born with an entrepreneurial spirit and an independent attitude. She was the first female paper carrier for the Toronto Star at 8 years of age and continued to deliver the newspaper using her bicycle through her high school years.

As a young woman, Betty decided to carve her own path in life and opened her own business.

In her own words, Betty enjoyed her freedom. She owned and operated a general store on Mary Street in Oshawa for over two decades and happily retired in her 40s when she sold her business.

Like her father, Betty loved to garden and spend time outdoors enjoying many summers of her retirement at her cottage in Muskoka. Her gardens were splendid retreats full of colour and life, just like Betty.

Betty had many close friends in Oshawa from her neighbourhood, The Carriage House Retirement Home and Grove Park Home in Barrie. Her cats Morris (who lived for 23 years) and Whitey were her close companions and brought her much happiness.

Betty’s wit and sharpness was legendary. She was known for her keen sense of humour, kindness towards animals and wide breadth of knowledge and opinions on current events in the news and sports. Her laugh, smile and kindness will be missed by many.

A visitation will be held at the OSHAWA FUNERAL HOME, 847 King Street West, Oshawa (905) 721-1234 on Saturday, March 11th, 2023 from 12:30pm to 1:30pm. The funeral service will follow in the Chapel at 1:30pm.
