Marjorie "Ann" Clayton (nee Routliffe) passed away peacefully February 28, 2023, in her 81st year.
Beloved daughter of Emma “Toby” Routliffe (nee Kerr) and Robert "Bud" Routliffe.
Loving wife of Grant of 55 years and proud mother of Robert Bruce Clayton (Glynis), Bonnie Ann Clayton and Tara Lee Clayton (Fred).
Adoring Ganny to Ewan, Keiran and Brenna Markwell. Survived by siblings Bonnie Catherine O'Connor and John Albert Routliffe.
Ann was born in Ottawa and spent her childhood growing up in Aylmer, Quebec.
She attended Hull High School and graduated grade 13 from Glebe Collegiate in Ottawa, Ontario.
After high school graduation Ann worked for a year with the Federal Government of Canada. When Ann turned eighteen, she enrolled in the nursing program at the Royal Victoria Hospital School of Nursing in Montreal.
She graduated as a Registered Nurse (RN) in 1964 and worked at several hospitals across Canada.
Through a chance encounter Ann and Grant met for the first time at the Pine Lodge Hotel in Rawdon, Quebec. After an exciting and sometimes long-distance courtship Ann and Grant were married in 1967 in Aylmer, Quebec, and honeymooned in the Maritimes.
After the birth of their first child Ann decided to leave nursing and devote her time and energy to raising a busy young family. In the early 1980’s Ann re-certified as a nurse and in later years worked at Durham College in various positions.
After retirement Ann worked for the Canadian Red Cross as a volunteer. She loved to travel, spend time with family and friends at the cottage in Haliburton, Ontario, and was known to enjoy an 'occasional' wager at any casino.
Family was the center of Ann's life and as the matriarch of our family, she loved us unconditionally, encouraged our dreams and celebrated all our successes. She will be dearly missed.
A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held June 17, 2023, between 12:30 - 1 pm at BARNES MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME located at 5295 Thickson Rd. North, Whitby ON L1M 1W9, (905) 655-3662, followed by a A Celebration of Life Ceremony in the Barnes Chapel at 1:00 pm. A Celebration Reception will follow on the Garden Patio.
