Smith DouglasSMITH, Douglas  -

March 2, 1949 - April 21, 2023

It is with profound sadness that the family of Gordon (Douglas) Smith, born March 2, 1949 wish to announce his passing while surrounded by his family on April 21st, 2023 at 10:17pm after a lengthy hard- fought battle with leukemia.

Doug was in his 74th year and is a much-loved husband, father, Papa, brother, uncle, and great-uncle to his family. He loved his home and his property and took so much pride in it.

He enjoyed teaching his grandkids about nature and how things work, and always did his part for the birds and wildlife that live nearby. Some of his favorite things were his afternoon naps on the front porch in the warm weather, listening to the songs of the birds, spending time with the family, cottage trips, and yearly getaways to the hunting camp with his friends.

He is survived by his siblings Marie Lawson (wife of the late Bill Lawson), Joyce Piper, Ron Smith and his wife Norma, Beverly Thompson, Barbara Bassano (Roy), Roy Hooker(husband of the late Dorothy Hooker), Bob Smith and his wife Heather Haliburton-Smith, and Margaret Smith.

He will also be missed by his many in-laws; Jane Martin (Fred), Jacqueline Quinn (the late Kenneth Quinn), Michael Heffering (Rosanna), Judy Wright (Brian), Julianne Gilbert (Ron), and Jim Heffering (Sharon) and the many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great nephews.

Doug was welcomed into heaven by his parents, Gordon and Sadie Smith (nee: Puckrin), his sisters Dorothy Hooker and Shirley Ellis, and his brother Brian Smith.

Doug was loved and well-cared for by his devoted, compassionate wife of 49+ years,

Jennifer Smith (nee: Heffering), his son Pat Smith (Michelle Bonsma) and his daughter Tanya Smith-Yorke (Dexter Yorke). He was always extremely proud of his 4 grandchildren, Connor, Sienna, Addison and Harper. They will miss their ‘’best Papa” so much.

Doug’s wife and family wish to thank all of his family and friends who were there to offer so much help and support during his illness. He loved and appreciated all of you, as do we.

A special thank you to the Oncology department at Princess Margaret Hospital and to Dr. Schattner and his team at the Durham Region Cancer Centre for his kind and compassionate care over the past few years. To Doug’s palliative home care nurses, we as a family appreciate everything you did for Doug.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting a blood donation (if you’re able) to be made to the Canadian Blood Services, in honor of Doug, by calling 1-888-236-6283 to book an appointment.

If you prefer, a monetary donation can be made to the Durham Region Cancer Centre at Lakeridge Health Corporation in Doug’s memory.

Visitation at BARNES MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 5295 Thickson Rd. N. Whitby on Wednesday April 26th from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Service will follow on Thursday in the Barnes Chapel at 1:00 pm.

The family will hold a Celebration of Life at date not yet chosen.
