KALAR, Florence Bernice (nee Read)  Kalar  -   On August 8, 2023, at Fairview Lodge (Trafalgar Square), Florence Kalar passed away with her daughter by her side. Florence was in her 98th year,

Florence was born in Orillia, Ontario on February 23, 1926 to Henry & Teenie Read.

 

In the early 1940’s the family moved to Whitby.

 

Florence worked as a ticket seller at the Brock Theatre in downtown Whitby and at the Whitby Post Office. In 1948 Florence married John (Jack) Kalar and were married for 65 years until “Johnny’s” passing in August, 2013.

Florence Is survived by her daughter, Jacquie, of Whitby and several nieces & nephews.

Florence is also predeceased by her sisters, Margaret (Floyd) Smith; Mary (Auston) McKay; Jean (Carl) Parise and her brother, George (Millie) Read. She is also predeceased by brothers & sisters-in-law, Dorothy & Frank Merchant, Frank & Shirley Kalar and Claire & Frank Irwin, as well as by nieces & nephews, Ronnie Smith, Jim McKay, Beth Parise, Donna (Parise) Treffers, Fran (Parise) Reid, Debbie Read and Stan Read.

Florence was a member of the Candy Bowling league for many years at the Whitby Bowling alley on Byron Street. Florence did volunteer work with the Whitby General Hospital, Canadian Cancer Society, Heart & Stroke and she worked during many elections. Florence loved her flower gardens. She followed many sports along with Johnny.

Thank you to the staff at Fairview Lodge, in particular those who work on Trafalgar Square, where she has resided since 2019. We couldn’t have asked for a more caring environment.

Arrangements have been made at Mount Lawn, Garrard Road, Whitby, for Friday September 22, 2023. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the funeral at 11:00 a.m. Internment and reception will occur immediately after the funeral.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
