OBITUARIES  ...for the DURHAM REGION

 

 

 

 

  

 

 

 

 

 

 

MILLER, John  -  On March 1, 2024, after a brief illness, John died peacefully surrounded by his family at Lakeridge Health Pickering Ajax Hospital.

 

He was born on May 25, 1946.

He was predeceased by his parents, Hugh and Elsie (Moon) Miller of Claremont, Ontario. Beloved brother of Jim and his wife Charlotte of Claremont; devoted uncle of Chris and his wife Kristin Biefer of Whitby, Ontario.

 

Adored great-uncle of Felicity. Kind, generous and witty, John will be mourned by his many relatives, friends, neighbours, former colleagues and former students. John graduated in Honours English from Victoria College, Toronto, then earned his Ph. D. in English from McMaster University, researching his thesis at Trinity College, Cambridge.

 

He was a gifted, inspiring teacher in the English faculty at Concordia University for over 40 years. He also mentored countless students in his role as undergraduate academic advisor.

 

Throughout his life, John had a passion for literature, music and performing arts, attending the Stratford and Shaw Festivals for many years. He was a devout member of the United Church of Canada.

 

His family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the hospital staff in Ajax for their compassionate care.

 

Funeral service at Dixon-Garland Funeral Home, 166 Main Street North, Markham, Ontario on Saturday, March 23rd at 2 p.m. A reception luncheon will follow. Cremation has taken place, and private interment at St. John's Presbyterian Cemetery in Pickering will occur at a later date.

 

The family suggests that instead of offering flowers, you make contributions in John's memory to the Charity of Your Choice.
