MacKINNON, J. Merilyn  -  It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of Merilyn at the age of 83, after a brief but hard fought battle with Leukemia.

Merilyn MacKinnon, beloved wife of the late Ian, will be greatly missed by her daughter Carolynn.

She is predeceased by her only son, John.

Strongly connected to her family, Merilyn was a wonderful sister to Beverley Anne Bayne and to the departed Peggy Gordon.  She will be missed by her many nieces, nephews and cousins in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and abroad. Raised in Ottawa, Merilyn attended Glebe Collegiate then became an x-ray technician at the Ottawa General Hospital.

After meeting her soon-to-be husband on a blind date, he convinced her to take a technical job in the labs of the National Research Council, where she was surprised when the scientists entered her in the Miss Civil Service Pageant and she won!  Newly married, Merilyn and Ian moved to Toronto where they settled in Hillcrest Village, built lifelong friendships and raised their family.

In the 1990’s, after founding and running her own marketing company, Merilyn retired with Ian to Port Perry and started a new wonderful life in Canterbury Commons, again diving into community activities and cherished living in a small town.

The family would like to thank the incredible nurses who cared for Merilyn in the last months. Your compassion was the very best medicine.

Family and friends will be received at the Low & Low Funeral Home, Port Perry, on Friday April 27, 2018 from 5 to 8 p.m. A celebration of Merilyn’s life will be held on Saturday April 28, 2018 at 11 a.m. at the Port Perry United Church, 294 Queen Street, Port Perry. A reception will follow the service at the Canterbury Commons Community Centre, 127 Waterbury Crescent, Port Perry.

Donations may be made in Merilyn’s memory to the Port Perry Hospital Foundation.
