It is with deep sadness but also a comforting sense of peace that the family of Eileen Anita Spencer of Beaverton, Ontario announces her passing at age 90 at Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital from complications of chronic myelogenous leukemia on Friday, January 24, 2014.
Eileen was born in Oshawa General Hospital on August 23, 1923. She was the eldest of four children of the late Joseph Scott McColm and Anne Brown Burton McColm of Gibbons Street, Oshawa. Eileen was predeceased by her brother Douglas Burton McColm (2004) and sister Shirley Madge MacLeod (2013) and is survived by her brother Clifford Scott McColm (Joan) of Ottawa. Eileen was predeceased by her husband Edward Charles ("Ted") Spencer (1989). She is survived by her sons John Charles (Cynthia) of Toronto, Douglas Scott (Dina) of Kincardine and Craig Clifford of Kemptville, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces and nephew.
Eileen moved to Beaverton in 1946 when her husband purchased a business in the village. She spent 20 years as a homemaker and community volunteer before joining the staff of Lakeview Manor in the Region of Durham in 1967. She retired from her position as Assistant Administrator in 1988 in order to devote her time to tending her much-admired gardens on Victoria Avenue, to travelling, to cheering on her beloved Blue Jays, and to continuing her community work.
A lover of Canadian literature and theatre, Eileen always could be found with a book at her side or planning another theatre outing with friends. Eileen was a loyal reader of the Toronto Star and often clipped stories and reviews to share with others. In addition to her many interests, Eileen was an avid follower of Canadian politics, ever ready to discuss the issue of the day. Eileen managed her own home in Beaverton until the day she died.
The family would like to thank the team of superb health-care providers, supporters, friends and neighbours who made it possible for Eileen to fulfill her wish to remain in the house she had called home for 66 years. Notable among them are her family physician Dr. D. Frances McCordic, her hematologist Dr. Deven Bhatt, caregivers Evelyne, Barbara, Stephanie and Elaine, household supporters Katie, Claire, Roy and Nancy and her many wonderful friends, especially Maxine Tierney, Sheila Radmann and the incredible Diane Sutherland whose friendship brought so much joy and comfort to Eileen.
In accordance with her wishes, Eileen will be inurned next to her husband at the Old Stone Church Cemetery, Beaverton, Ontario, at a private family gathering.
