On December 25th, 2014, I lost the love of my life to cancer.
Hugh had fought, over the last 2+ years, a very rare form of melanoma that affected his eye which recently metastasized to liver cancer. It is a devastating illness Hugh battled, attempting to carry on life as usual which is why many did not know he was ill.
Hugh was a wonderful father to Shaun, Philip (Dig), Patrick and pops to Wylie O’Neil. Hugh is survived by his mother Ethel and his siblings, Dennis, Bonnie and Susan who are all devastated by the loss of their big brother. He will be missed by Sherry’s entire family who embraced Hugh as one of their own, especially Laura who had a special friendship with Hugh.
Hugh and I wanted to thank any number of people who provided support including Dr. Markowitz at the CNIB, who made the last 2½ years bearable, the entire team at Princess Margaret Hospital and most recently the Uxbridge Cottage Hospital staff who gave Hugh as much peace as possible in his last days. Most importantly was Hugh’s good friend Laird Fraser. Laird was by Hugh’s side for the entire duration of this illness. He kept Hugh’s confidence, offered his friendship and generous support, we both thank you.
Hugh has gone to meet our dogs Ace and Gertie, who passed away earlier this year, to walk the trails until I join him. He was a good man and I love him dearly.
A private wake will be held for family and close friends.
In lieu of flowers, we would appreciate any donations be given in memory of Hugh to the CNIB or Alzheimer’s of Ontario, which afflicts Hugh’s mother. Sherry O’Neil and family.
