SMITH, Margaret Calderwood (nee Read) -

Smith_Margaret(January 16th 1919 - April 6th 2012)

Margaret Calderwood Read Smith led a life filled with dignity, commitment and family.

She was a true matriarch whose quiet kindness, generosity and humility will be

Cherished by her family and all who knew her.

She was born in a hospital (very unusual for the time) in Orillia in 1919, the first and only child of the next generation of her mother’s whole family of eight (five sisters and three brothers) and therefore considered to be a miracle baby. Thus began Marg’s long history of care giving, compassion and learning. At 80, she carefully chronicled the many stories of her childhood, and the hardships they bore through the depression, the strong family ties and how they prevailed.

Marg attended Toronto Normal School, currently the site of Ryerson, from 1936-1937 and with her newly acquired teaching credentials taught in a one room school in Coulson for two years, then to Hamlet from 1938-1942. She married Floyd Bertram Smith in Whitby in 1942 and they had four children…Carol (Wayne), David (Sonja), Ronnie and Neil (Catherine). Of special note in her well established teaching career was when she taught for ten years at Dundas Street School, now Florence M. Heard with whom she became good friends.

St. Mark’s United Church in Whitby and the life of the congregation played a pivotal role in Marg and Floyd’s growing family. Marg was a committed member who gave freely of her time to run C.G.I.T. groups, the Sunday school and served on the United Church Women. She was a lay pastoral Visitor for St. Mark’s and even when she could no longer physically get to see members for visitation, she carried out her duties by phone. She volunteered for the Durham Distress Centre and gave freely of her time to many organizations.

Travel and learning about other cultures was a passion and she took many trips to explore the world.

The enormous strength of her spirituality and faith, though always present, was even more evident during the unexpected loss of their son Ronnie, killed in a car accident at the age of 23 and the loss of her husband Floyd in 1977 when she was just 58 years old. Sadly, her grandson Brett passed away from heart complications at the age of 28. Her faith sustained her then and continued to do so for the rest of her life.

Margaret is also predeceased by her brother George Read, sister Jean Parise and is survived by her sisters Mary McKay and Florence Kalar.

Margarets grandchildren Brett, Heather, Cameron, Shannon, Meghan and Adam brought her much joy. She not only reveled in their accomplishments and was present for many milestones but was also inspirational to them as a giver.

Surrounded by family, she spent her final days in dignity and unafraid of the future.

Visitation will take place at W.C. TOWN FUNERAL CHAPEL ( 110 Dundas St E, Whitby 905-668-3410 ) on Wednesday April 11, 2012 from 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm.

A Celebration of Margaret’s life will take place at ST. MARKS UNITED CHURCH, (201 Colborne St S, Whitby) on Thursday April 12, 2012 at 10:30 am.

Interment to take place at GROVESIDE CEMETERY.

Donations in Margaret’s memory to St. Mark's united Church or the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation would be greatly received.
