ATYEO, Gerald Leroy Atyeo, Obituary | Print |

ATYEO, Gerald Leroy -

Gerald Leroy Atyeo left us on April 10, 2014 after 95 years of living life to the absolute fullest.

He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Carol (2000), parents Roy and Mary and siblings Margaret, Dorothea and Ralph and loving companion later in life, Ruth Armstrong.

He leaves his children Mary (Robert), Catherine (John) and Richard (Lina) and grandchildren Conor, Carolyn, Blair, Kelly, Alastair and Ian.

Gerald was born in Belleville, Ontario and showed his legendary energy early in life. He played many sports and started a lifelong love affair with tennis. He hitched rides in cars with buddies to Algonquin Park for camping and hitched rides on trains for wild times in Toronto - made possible because his father was a well-known steam locomotive engineer.

His lifelong love of performing started with school plays and singing the great tunes of the Big Band era. Later he would sit at the piano playing and singing for his children, and for decades lent his powerful bass to church choirs and Gilbert and Sullivan productions.

The Belleville years were also the start of his huge passion for bridge. In his memoirs he recalled one night when he and friends were so desperate to keep playing that they went to the police station and asked to use an unoccupied cell.

His degree in electrical engineering from the University of New Brunswick was interrupted by his wartime service. A naturally strong leader, he soon rose to the rank of captain in the Royal Canadian Signal Corps and saw distinguished service in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.

After the war, Gerald started his long career with Bell Canada in Montreal and Toronto. He was active in the Institute of Electric and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and became an international expert on the protection of power systems. With this expertise, he eventually formed a consulting firm with two other engineers and travelled regularly to Saudi Arabia for their main client ARAMCO.

While his career took him to conferences all over the globe, Gerald loved home and family life, first in Hudson, Quebec and then in Burlington, Ontario.

His retirement years were filled with gardening, singing, curling, golf, tennis, summers at Hay Bay with family and many trips with Carol. A voracious reader, in the last 20 years of his life he relished the time he had to read the classics of English literature and delve into theology.

Though losing Carol to Alzheimer's Disease was devastating, Gerald just kept going, shooting a hole in one at 88, travelling to Cuba, South Africa and when he was 92 to the Mediterranean with grandson Blair.

He drew strength from his Christian faith, which he endeavoured to live every day. He gave generously to numerous charities and was joyful and kind to friends and strangers because he knew he'd been blessed in life.

A funeral service to celebrate Gerald's life will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 23 at East Plains United Church, 375 Plains Road East, Burlington, Ontario.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
