FORBES, Ray Thomas Forbes Obituary | Print |

FORBES, Ray Thomas -

WWII Veteran Corporal RHLI-Dieppe POW-(Lansdorf, Stalag VIIIB)
Life member of RCL Branch #114. Recipient of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal 2012.

Roy was born in Moffat, ON, on January 17, 1921. He later moved to Oakville, as a child with his family, where he resided for the rest of his life. While attending school at SS No. 7, Dad would walk to school every morning and said hello to a local farmer whose name was Sam Franks. The farmer would respond, “Morning Sam," thus came the nickname ‘Sam.'

Roy passed away peacefully in his 95th year at OTMH on Tuesday, June 23, 2015.

Predeceased, and now with the love of his life, Catherine Mackie Forbes (2006).

Loving father of Carol (Lenard) Muldoon, Nancy (Steve) Thomas, Linda, Bill (Sandra) Forbes and Janet (Sean) Birtch. Cherished grandfather of Robert, Michael (Belinda) Muldoon, Stephanie (Mark) Carvahlo, Tammy (Trevor) Allin, Tara and Kyle Thomas, Shana, Nicole and Casandra King, Cheryl (Ruchi) Perera, Candace (Brandon) Colquhoun, Andrew (Sarah) and David Forbes, Katie (Josh) Edgington, Mitchell (Jennifer), Samuel and Tabitha Birtch – all Sam’s kookoos. Great-grandfather of Jessica, Mikayla, Logan M., Austin, Luke, Caleb, Jaysean, Paityn, Ethan, Avery, Zoe, Damian, Logan K., Anika, Colby and Charlotte. Dad always enjoyed his visits from Barbara and Sue Balonjan.

Predeceased by his parents, Margaret and James, brothers Lockie, George and Fred, sisters Francis and Maudie, granddaughter Dayna Birtch and great-grandson Malcolm King-Diamond. Roy was a proud member of RCL Branch #114 (70 years) and served in many roles including President. He has many fond memories involving the Legion.

Like everyone growing up in Oakville, Dad started his working career at the Basket Factory. This was interrupted when he signed up (September 1939) to serve his country (1940-1945). Dad was wounded and taken prisoner of war in the raid on Dieppe and remained a POW until the end of the war. Upon returning from the war, Dad met Mom and later married (September 1948). They lived in a two-room shack while Dad and his brother-in-laws (Bill and Pat Mackie) built the only home they had.

He worked at Barringham Rubber, later called Monsanto, and part-time driving cab at night, and on weekends he worked at the Breweries Retail to make ends meet. He later worked at Allen’s Industry in Hamilton where he finished his working career. Dad was also a very proud member of the Oakville Fire Department as a volunteer for 20 years (1961-1981) retiring with the rank of Deputy Chief.

Dad enjoyed many years involved in baseball, first playing with the Kerr Street Merchants, later coaching his kids, followed by umpiring and then coaching the Legion ball club where he had many happy memories. To Bill Merritt, thank you for being such a good friend and we know Dad had many fond memoires from baseball, snooker and following the Oakville Blades hockey team. Mom and Dad always enjoyed the visits from you and Virginia.

Visitation will be held at the Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville, Ontario from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, June 28th.  The funeral service celebrating Roy’s life, will be held in the chapel Monday, June 29th at 11 a.m. Interment to follow.

Roy’s family would like to thank the staff at OTMH-4C/4E for all your care and compassion, to everyone at the Vistamere Retirement Home for giving Dad a second home, he really enjoyed his time there, to the staff at Westoak Nursing Home for all your care and support, and to Dr. Rzepka for your care and compassion for Mom and Dad throughout the years.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Alzheimer Society or RCL Branch #114 Poppy Fund.

We will miss you Dad.
Say hello to Mom.
Rest in peace.
Love from all of us.
