MYERS, Ann Astrid Myers - Obituary | Print |

MYERS, Ann Astrid -

(1921 - 2015)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our cherished Mom on February 20, 2015 at the age of 93, at Burloak Long Term Care Residence, in Burlington, Ontario.

Ann is predeceased by our Dad, Doug (1988) and is loved by her two children, Pat Parnell (Ron, predeceased) and Doug (Joanne). She is fondly remembered by her four grandchildren: Erin, Ryan, Adam and Steven, her nieces and nephew and extended families.

Mom lived a full, rich life, coming to Canada from her native Finland as a young girl with her mother, father, sister, Ellen (predeceased). A proud Canadian, she never forgot her Finnish roots and belief in the strength of Sisu.  Mom's life took her from Toronto with her new husband Doug to St. Thomas, Ontario then to Cobourg, Ontario where she lived from 1961 until 2009 before relocating to Burlington to be nearer her family.

Mom's life was filled with family and friends, her church, various charities and her beloved Beta Sigma Phi sorority, which she co-founded in Cobourg in 1962 with her lifelong friend, Marg Simpson. Mom loved to dance and to enjoy parties and family gatherings, sharing a love of laughter and supporting each of us in our personal adventures.

We would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff for the excellent care Mom has received at the Burloak Long Term Facility.

At Mom's request, a private family interment will take place at a later date. Arrangements out of Burlington.

Memorial donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or a personal charity of choice.

WHELAN, Margaret Louise (Smith) Whelan Obituary | Print |

WHELAN, Margaret Louise (nee Smith) -

Whelan_MargaretPlease join us in saying goodbye to our beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Margaret Louise Whelan (nee Smith) who left us on Friday, February 20th, 2015 in her 89th year. Margaret passed away peacefully in Burlington, Ontario surrounded by her husband and children.

Margaret Louise Smith was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and was the eldest daughter of Richard and Maude Smith. She met the love of her life, William Whelan in Church in Winnipeg in 1953. They married and moved to Niagara Falls, then Cornwall and ultimately settled in Burlington. Along this journey Margaret and Bill raised 5 children and enjoyed 8 grandchildren.

Margaret is survived by her husband of 61.5 years, Bill Whelan, Children; Maureen Fazzari (Joe), Patrick Whelan, Molly Goodish (Bob), Elizabeth Hill (Ken), Norma Brown (Mark). She is also survived by her great treasures, her 8 grandchildren, Dave Fazzari, Katie Fazzari, Jack Brown, Darrel Hill, Eric Hill, Mitch Brown, Georgia Brown and Harry Goodish. She is also survived by her sister Shelagh Pollack (Joe), cousins, many nieces, nephews and friends.

Predeceased by her parents, Dick and Maude Smith and her sister Josephine Studholme.

Margaret, Maggie or Marg was a good friend and confidante, who will be remembered for her quick wit, warmth and kindness. Margaret was a great cook and baker. She had many friends who she remembered at special occasions with the gift of one of her pies, cookies, butter tarts or scones. Margaret also instilled a love of reading in her children that still flourishes; it was common to pass a good novel around among family and friends.

Margaret was an avid gardener and nurtured extensive gardens where she could make anything bloom. She was also an accomplished knitter. She made her children, grandchildren and friends dozens of beautiful sweaters and blankets that warm and remind us of her love.

Most cherished memories that will forever remain in our family’s hearts are the decades of summers spent with Mom and Dad at Sauble Beach. Childhood friends, husbands, grandchildren and dogs all came along over the years to share in those fun sun filled days and camp fire nights. Mom made many wonderful lifelong friends at The Beach.

The Family would like to express its thanks to the Medical Staff that took care of our Margaret at Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital: Dr. Kim, Dr. Rogers and the wonderful ICU Nurses. A special thanks to Dr. Rohin Malhotra for his attentive care, kindness and compassion.

CHARETTE, Ricci Rene Roberts Charette Obituary | Print |

CHARETTE, Ricci Rene Roberts -

Charette_Ricci(1971 - 2015) - On the morning of Thursday, February 19, 2015, Ricci passed away peacefully at Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga, ON. Ricci had been battling colon cancer since February 2012 when she was originally diagnosed stage IV.

Ricci Rene Roberts-Charette was born December 8, 1971 at Hahn U.S. AFB in what was West Germany at the time. She was the third child born to Audrey Ruth McCaffrey (Russell) and Richard Edward Roberts.

She was passionate and committed to any project she started and always produced. She loved spending time with her family and friends. Ricci's social agenda always sat high on the list of priorities. Seldom was there a weekend not packed with social activity. She adored her cats (Osiris and Isis). They often put a smile on her face when she was down.

Ricci was proud of many of her accomplishments. However, never more proud than her two sons. Ricci is survived by her eldest son Stephen Everett Tulloch and her youngest James Edward Tulloch, her loving parents Don & Audrey McCaffrey and Richard & Idamarie Roberts as well as her devoted husband Leo Charette. She is also survived by her sisters Julie (Tanith) Roberts and Jeanine Austin.

As battling cancer is no easy task, Ricci had support from many family and friends. She also had a wonderful medical team both with the Oncology and Palliative Departments at Credit Valley Hospital. She held her doctors with such high regards. A special thanks to them and their staff.

As much of Ricci's journey was done outside of the hospital, she relied heavily on community nursing to come in and change dressings, help her position when uncomfortable and monitor her medications when IV fluids needed to be used. She was very passionate about Community Nursing due to her long-standing career in Admin and HR in that field. She held high expectations and rarely did the team from Care Partners disappoint. She always felt she was in good hands.

A celebration of life service will be held in Oakville on Saturday, February 28th.

Ricci and the family request a donation be made to Credit Valley Hospital / Carlo Fidani Regional Cancer Centre in her name.

SWIEKATUN, Veronica Swiekatun Obituary | Print |

SWIEKATUN, Veronica -

Swiekatun_VeronicaPassed away on February 16, 2015 in her 82nd year surrounded by family.

Veronica was born in Poland, now Belarus, in 1932. During the war and post war years her family was moved from country to country: France, Italy, Siberia, India, Pakistan and her most cherished and memorable, Kenya.

In 1950 Veronica came to Canada through Pier 21 in Halifax. She settled in Guelph with her sister (Janina), brother (John) and mother (Elizabeth). Her brother Joe moved to the US. Soon after she met Walter, they married and moved to Toronto. As many new immigrants through hard work they made a good life in their new homeland for themselves and their three children, Chet, Sylvia (husband John) and Lisa (husband Lee).

In time they moved to Oakville. Having the kindest, most generous and gentlest of hearts, her home was open to everyone. There was always laughter, friends, family, food and good times. Veronica was a dedicated caregiver to Walter, who suffered from MS, for 40 years. Walter passed away 10 years ago and Veronica’s boundless energy was focussed on her grandchildren, Steven, Sarah, Kristie, Holly and Renee.

As her Alzheimer’s progressed she moved to Kensington Gardens where she ended her journey. We want to thank the staff at Kensington for all their compassion and dedication.

A funeral mass will be held on Friday, February 20th at 11:00 a.m. at St. James Roman Catholic Church, 231 Morden Road, Oakville.
