FIORELLA, Lucas Luigi Fiorella Obituary | Print |

FIORELLA, Lucas Luigi -

Fiorella_Lucas(April 21, 1995 - October 12, 2014)

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Lucas on October 12, 2014.

Lucas will forever be remembered as a kindhearted son, brother, grandson, great-grandson, nephew, cousin and friend.

He will be greatly missed by sister Vanessa, mother Susan, father Sam, grandparents Luigi, Filomena, Valentine and Catherine, great-grandmother Giovanna, uncle Gabe, aunt Mary, uncle Dez, aunt Cheryl, cousins Savannah, Gabriel, Jacqueline, and Madelyn, and so many of the extended family and friends that are part of our lives.

Lucas was studying Robotics as part of the Computer Science faculty at Carleton University, a choice that was foreshadowed in pre-school where he was completing 50-piece puzzles and doing math equations before he learned to read. His favourite toys were “Bionicles”, Lego, and K’nex. He would immediately throw out the instructions that came with these kits and successfully built them on his own. He’d then tear them down and create something entirely new with the pieces. He was a builder, a connector, in both his hobbies and his life.

From a young age (starting in pre-school) he was fond of making up jokes, which he himself said were often “stupid” but he told them because he thought “well, a bad joke is better than no joke.” Indeed, his goal every day seemed to be to make people laugh and to bring joy to those around him.

Every one of his friends has stated that at one point or another, he made a difference in their lives by listening to them, offering a shoulder to cry on, and providing the counselling they needed. Many have said his presence and counselling had changed the course of their lives - so much so, that he considered pursuing a career in psychology. Making others happy was his life’s goal. Unfortunately, allowing others into his world and sharing his own feelings was too difficult for him.

Lucas’s life is not measured by the years he lived. The impact Lucas had on the lives of those around him in during his almost 20 year life is equivalent to what most people struggle to accomplish in a full life span.

Arrangements out of Oakville. Funeral service will be held on Friday, October 17th at 1:00 p.m. at Mary Mother of God Roman Catholic Church, 2741 North Ridge Trail, Oakville. Entombment to follow.

SWAN, John Alexander 'Jack' Swan Obituary | Print |

SWAN, John Alexander 'Jack' -

Swan_JackJack passed away at the Milton Hospital on October 10, 2014 at the age of 88.

Beloved husband of Lois, caring father of the late Karen (Matt) Haist, Jack (Connie) Swan, Mike (Kim) Swan, Bob (Cynthia) Swan and step children David (Sue) Smith, Don (Shelagh) Smith, Debbie (David) Stone, demanding grandfather of 12 grandchildren and the beginnings of the next generation of great grandchildren, and helpful friend and father figure to many.

Jack graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in Chemical Engineering, which propelled him into a lifetime of achievement in building. As part of his professional career spent with Tate and Lyle and various subsidiaries, he was the head engineer for the Redpath Sugar refinery along the Toronto waterfront in the 1950’s.

In his personal life, as a strict non-vegetarian, he was always building – boats, decks, houses/cottages, furniture and more. He had an uncanny ability to complete a complex project with only one visit for lumber and supplies and no spare parts. Everyone was happy to have something “Built by Jack”. For his quieter times he enjoyed travel, skiing, boating, reading, animals, and the “calming” effects of playing cards and golf.

All young people feared the inevitable cross-examination when they returned from school as he would always ask if they got a 100 in Math. While few ever did, it never deterred him from being a loving and caring grandfather to them all. He saw this as important, as it was critical for future success and the capacity to extend Canada’s place in the world.

While never boastful, he accomplished much, set a high bar towards which all of us should aspire, and his memory will forever influence the lives of those he touched.

A service to celebrate Jack will be held on October 18th in Milton.

Donations to the charity of one’s choice would be appreciated by the family in lieu of flowers.

KNIGHT, Gillian Knight Obituary | Print |

KNIGHT, Gillian -

Knight_GillianOur dear daughter, Gillian Knight, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes in Oakville on Thursday, October 9th, 2014.

Gillian was born in Halifax, NS, in 1972, but spent most of her life in Oakville. She was recognized by and known to a lot of people in the community. Many she had met while shopping, attending church and participating in social groups.

Although mentally challenged, she had a real interest in people and had an unusual memory that allowed her to remember what someone had told her about themselves and their family members, even long after being told. She would recall at later encounters what someone had told her and was always interested to learn news from them.

She particularly loved family gatherings where she could find out what had happened in the lives of relatives. She was always interested and joyful to listen to family members tell of developments in their lives. Gillian had a close relationship with Ross Westaway for several years, which time was in many respects the highlight of her life. She really missed Ross when he passed away about seven years ago.

Gillian will be greatly missed by her mother and father, Judy and Henry Knight (of Cobourg, Ontario), and by her sister, Nancy Fairweather (married to Jim), and her brothers, Andrew, Peter (married to Julie) and James Knight. Gillian was an aunt to Hailey and Jak Knight, and to Raine, Kat (Sharp) and James Fairweather, and to the late Lisa Knight.

She was within the family a special member who was supported and enjoyed by all of us. She will be really missed by all.
