As hard as he worked, there was always time for play - skiing, golf, travel or a good game of cards. Our family will always treasure the memory of our times together, whether around the table at family celebrations, at the cottage in Muskoka or racing down the ski hills in Keystone, Colorado.

Retirement never slowed Bill down. Every minute was filled with activity, in particular in the companionship of others. He loved to laugh and he did it a lot. Bill was married for 70 years to the love of his life, Aileen. It was her love and devotion that was truly his greatest joy.

It was Bill's wish that there be no formal funeral service. We know there are many who will take a moment to remember him in their own way. Arrangements out of Burlington.

Those wishing to make a donation in Bill's memory are asked to please consider the Salvation Army or Joseph Brant Hospital.

WATT, Doris Alfreda (Long) -

Artist, crafter and a love for family, Doris entered into eternal peace, October 15, 2014 at Macassa Lodge, Hamilton, at the age of 98 years young.

A devoted daughter, born February 18, 1916 in Montreal, Quebec to the late Florence and Alfred Long.

Married December 6, 1941, Doris lived life to the fullest with her late husband, Robert John Watt, for 49 years.

Sons Ronald (Novel) and Richard (Wendy) will forever fondly remember Doris. Her four grandchildren Allen (Lisa), Tracy (Gus), Valerie and Carrie (Ben). Her six great-grandchildren Hayden, Nicholas, Matthew, Amanda, Tyler and Xavier will remember her as a fun and happy Nannie.

Doris suffered a brain aneurysm at the young age of 20. Her life expectancy was not good and she was told she would not have children, but of course, knowing her stubbornness, she showed them all. Doris was not having any of that.

After raising her two sons, she went on and dabbled in the arts. Among drawing, hat making, leather work, oil and acrylic painting she found her niche in folk art. Doris and her dear friend Karen co-founded the Touch of Class Crafters. More and more talented crafters joined and continued for 27 years of amazing friends creating works of art in so many talented forms. Doris crafted all year working towards the one spectacular show for the Christmas season. People would come year after year to buy the amazing creations made by Doris and the other Crafters.

Doris leaves behind so many unforgettable memories, always had a smile on her face, laughter in her heart and a few tricks up her sleeve to be cherished by all her family and friends.

A Celebration of Doris' Life will be held later.

Wirkowski_Norbert_NobbyIt is with heavy hearts we announce that Nobby passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 15th, 2014 in his 89th year surrounded with the love of his family.

Married to Theresa (nee Lombardo) for the past 55 years. Loving father of Linda (Will) Drope, Norbie (Lucy), Carol (Mark) Elsley, and Rick (Kelly). Grandfather of Nicole, Adam, Laura, Lexi, Taylor and Olivia.

Predeceased by his parents Adolph and Julia Wirkowski and his sister Lorraine Paciorek, of Chicago, Illinois.

Anyone born before the Second World War knows that Toronto has lost a sporting hero from the days when the CFL and NFL were at par and Varsity Stadium was jammed to the rafters with gents in Raccoon coats. Those born after, who were lucky enough to know him and fall under that steely blue-eyed gaze, knew they were in the presence of a special man.

Growing up in Chicago, he learned sports at Crane High School, where he was the only triple letter athlete since Bears owner George Halas accomplished the feat 40 years before. Nobby received countless scholarship offers in Basketball, Baseball and Football, finally deciding on Football at the University of Miami, Ohio, the “Cradle of Coache." There he played for Woody Hayes and played with the likes of Bo Schembeckler and Ara Parseghian.
Nobby enjoyed relating how Sid Gillman pulled him up off the freshman team and made him demonstrate the “Arm." He was especially proud of the two Bowl Games he won and the 18 of 21 passes he completed in his senior finale.

True to his character he proudly served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific, but rarely spoke about it, except for the sea sickness he endured on the long journey overseas.

It was his early experiences in sport that forged the life he would lead in Canada as player and coach with the Argos, and as the quarterback of Hamilton and Calgary. Of course, his last minute touchdown pass to Zeke O’Connor in the mud and fog at Varsity to secure the 1952 Grey Cup for the Argos, is the stuff of legends.

While a professional, Nobby also coached and taught at De La Salle High School paving the way for his career at York University where he started the football program and retired as Athletic Director. Throughout his life, he touched the lives of many young people building upon their unique personal strengths while emphasizing the team.

Though a talented public speaker and story teller, Nobby was a man of few words, but a keen observer of people and their nature. He shook his head at the excessive celebration so prevalent in professional sport today, preferring to let excellence on the field do the talking. “Play your game” he would say, knowing that your confidence would be enough to beat a more talented opponent. He loved a winner, but knew there was more to learn from a tough loss that was hard fought.

Truly, he dedicated his life to his family - wife Theresa and four children all blessed with his athletic genes and strong character. So proud of each of them, and so welcoming to their spouses, he truly beamed when his grandchildren were playing around him and Maggie, J.J. and Molly ("granddogs") were begging for yet another treat.

Visitation will be held at Glen Oaks funeral home, Oakville on Sunday, October 19th from 1 - 4 pm and from 6 - 9 pm.

Funeral Mass will be conducted at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, 2473 Thorn Lodge Drive, Mississauga on Monday, October 20th at 10:30 a.m.

If desired, please consider a donation in his memory to the Oakville Hospital Foundation or to the Nobby Wirkowski Football Award at York University, www.ForNobby.ca..
