CROZIER, Shirley Elizabeth Crozier, Obituary | Print |

CROZIER, Shirley Elizabeth -

November 15, 1935 - August 18, 2014

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend to many, Shirley (Rutter) Hirst Crozier.

Shirley is survived by her loving husband, Clare Crozier, daughter’s Jennifer Hirst of Dundas; Catharine (Bruce) Macartney of West Vancouver and son Matthew (Lorraine) Hirst of Brantford;  grandchildren Hanna and Keenan Macartney; David, Ben (Desiree); Anna; Lucas; Abigail & Levi Hirst;  Carrie (Nick) Coty and James Hirst; great grandson Tyler Hirst, brother David (Pamela) Rutter of Ancaster and family in Toronto, New York, Florida and England.

Born in Cobourg, Ontario Shirley was the daughter of the late Florence Hill and Jack Rutter.

During her student days Shirley was a member of the Canadian Naval Reserve and for a time served on the Canadian aircraft carrier, HMS Bonaventure. Shirley was a graduate of Hamilton’s St. Joseph School of Nursing class of 1958.

As a dedicated, caring and highly skilled health professional Shirley worked in the Emergency Department at St. Joseph Hospital; in the community with family physician Dr. Vincent Rudnick, and since 1972 as a nurse practitioner at the McMaster University Medical Centre. In 1980 Shirley was appointed an Assistant  Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Medicine . Patients often referred to her as Dr. Shirley.

Shirley’s career exemplified her many good qualities, particularly her love of learning and generosity of spirit. It can best be described as one in which her advise was always sought and respected. As a woman of great conviction, independence and achievement she was devoted to her work, which she truly enjoyed, and to her family, which was her primary focus.

An active and engaged volunteer at St. Paul’s United Church, Dundas and the Dundas Museum & Archives, Shirley was a skilled homemaker and gracious hostess, accomplished award winning gardener; craftier, golf enthusiast, family historian and genealogist.  Shirley & Clare enjoyed their many travels: from coast to coast in Canada, Hilton Head Island, Great Britain; the south of France, New Zealand and Australia.

The family would like to thank the Rev. Rick Spies, Rev. Stan Wootton,  Dr. Leber (oncologist); Dr. Bates (thrombo clinic), Dr. Mulji (cardiologist), staff at the Juravinski Cancer Centre, Shirley’s medical colleagues, and our many friends for their compassionate care and support.

A celebration of Shirley’s life will take place at St. Paul’s United Church, Dundas on Friday, August 22nd at 1:00 p.m.

If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Juravinski Cancer Centre, St. Paul’s United Church or the Dundas Museum & Archives would be greatly appreciated by the family.

Predeceased by his parents Vincenzo and Maria Antonia Marchesano.

Predeceased by his siblings Domenico, Francesco, Salvatore, Catena, Vincenzo, Angeluzza, their spouses and Giuseppe.

Survived by brothers and sisters-in-law Attilio (Stella), Mike (Marisa), Giuseppe (Stella) Carere. Loving brother-in-law of the late Angelo, Catuzza, Domenico (Angelina), Giovanni (Catena), Emilia Carere.

Rosario will be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends in Canada, U.S., Italy and Australia.

Heartfelt thanks to the staff of the 7 South Trauma Unit of The General Hospital for their compassion and understanding.

HE DID IT HIS WAY: Rosario lived his life to the fullest. Born in Italy on October 8, 1917 to parents Vincenzo and Maria Antonia Marchesano in the small town of Polestina. He was blessed to be born on the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, hence his name Rosario.

In his childhood, from the age of 8, Rosario spent many hours tending the fields of his family farm along with his 8 siblings. Every day was a struggle, toiling hard cultivating the land. Rosario was not a stranger to hard work.

Throughout his life, he cultivated a strong work ethic which he passed on to his three children. In 1939, at the age of 19, Rosario was conscripted into the army at the onset of WWII. While on furlough, he married his childhood sweetheart Maria Vincenzina Carere in 1943.

To provide a better life for his family, Rosario immigrated to Canada in 1948, leaving behind his wife, and two children Vincenzo and Gilda. Hamilton, Ontario became his new home, settling in with his brother Domenico and family for his first year.

After four years of working on the C.N.R., he ventured back to Italy to bring his family to Hamilton where his daughter Inissina was born. Shortly after establishing himself in Hamilton, he began to slowly sponsor family members from Italy to his new found land, ensuring that their basic needs were met. Rosario worked for the C.N.R. acquiring the position of Section Foreman. He spent much of his 33 years overseeing the smooth operation and safe handling of the Bayview Yards.

At the age of 63, he made the decision to retire spending his golden years enjoying life. His favourite pastimes were gardening, cooking, wine and tomato sauce making and especially being a "Jack of all trades".

Rosario, as the Patriarch of his extended family, will be remembered for his generosity, selflessness and grit. We will greatly miss Rosario's storytelling of his youth, WWII experiences, his homeland and "how it was done in the old days".

Throughout his life, he was thankful for his many blessings. One of his greatest achievements was being able to still drive his car at the age of 96. Way to go, Dad!

A Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, August 20th at Regina Mundi Church at 10 a.m. Entombment to follow.

In kindness, donations to the Regina Mundi Building Fund or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
