MENNAMAN, Anja (Franken) Mennaman, obituary | Print |

MENNAMAN, Anja (nee Franken) -

Passed gracefully and peacefully at home, surrounded by family, September 15, 2014, far too soon, in her 57th year.

Anja will be loved and cherished beyond words every day by her loving husband Dave, and her beloved children of whom she was so proud, daughter Marika (Jeffery) and son Connor (Ally).

Predeceased by her father "Joe" and mother Mia.

Survived by her brother Bob and wife Heidi, and nieces and nephew Sarah, Katie, and Josh, and brother John.

Anja will be missed by Dave's parents, Ian and Margaret, brother Alan and wife Judy, their children, and Micaela. Anja also has an abundance of lifelong friends and colleagues (you know who you are), whose friendship, understanding, and compassion comforted her every day.

Anja fought her cancer with strength, determination, and courage - the same attributes that fueled her lifelong passion for running.

She completed her first marathon, the Hamilton Road 2 Hope in November 2013. She completed three Around the Bay Road Races, and many other runs throughout her life. Anja will be missed by her knitting needles and quilting blocks. She will be missed by her running shoes, her bike, and her kayak. She will be missed by the Confederation Waterfront Trail, and the trails and waterways of Cape Cod, our "second home". And she will be missed by the children and families she served so selflessly, and with such compassion and dedication as a Social Worker at the HWDSB.

In lieu of flowers, Anja would be honoured by the supporting of Tim Horton's Camp, McMaster Kids Camp, or any community agency that endorses a "Send a Kid to Camp" program.

Thank you to all the members of the palliative team along the way. Especially Bridget ("Ingrid") and Theresa from St. Joseph's Home Care, whose quality and comforting care was exceeded by their dedication, dignity, and compassion.

A very special thank you to Dave's co-workers, whose compassion, support, and assistance will never be forgotten.

Following a private family ceremony, please join us in a celebration of Anja's life on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at the Hamilton Waterfront Trust Centre, 47 Discovery Drive, Hamilton, between 3 - 6 p.m.

If only we could all have the vigour for life that Anja possesses. As she believed:

"Life will have its way - take it like a woman"

She was dedicated to the theatre with her husband Norman and particularly, Theatre Aquarius.  Louise enjoyed travel and adventure with her husband and children. She recently had returned from London, England, where she found great joy in sharing the sights and history of the region with her grandchildren.

All who were fortunate enough to have known Louise will miss her ready smile and always positive attitude.

Many thanks to Juravinski Hospital for their outstanding care and understanding, especially the "H" team of Dr. Hirte and Hilda.

Family interment will be held at a later date. A Celebration of Life for Louise will be held at ST. JOHN'S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 272 Wilson Street East (at Halson Street), Ancaster on Friday, September 19th at 11 a.m.

In memory of Louise, donations to Theatre Aquarius or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

ROBIS, Elias (Louie) Robis, Obituary | Print |

ROBIS, Elias ("Louie") -

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Louie Robis at the Hamilton General Hospital on Saturday, September 13, 2014.

Louie was born in Aetos, Macedonia, Greece and immigrated to Canada in 1956 settling in Hamilton.

He married Vasiliki ("Bessie") Papalexion in 1957 and they remained happily married for 57 years.

Only by her incredible effort and love, was Louie able to remain at home through the challenging months that followed his stroke in 2011.

Louie was an entrepreneur. His first venture was a restaurant at the corner of Barton and Kenilworth, the Bar-Ken. In 1972 he started the Granada Restaurant in downtown Hamilton. In 1982, he expanded by adding Chester's bar next door.

Louie loved the hospitality business because of the personal connection he had with his countless loyal customers and because of his employees, most of who worked with him in the business for many years. He was very thankful for these relationships.

Louie will be remembered by his family as a hardworking, considerate, kind and generous man with a delightfully sarcastic sense of humour.

Louie is survived by his beloved wife Bessie, cherished children Michael and Manie (Dwight), and adored grandchildren Katarina and Ellia as well as sisters-in-law of Alexandra Smyrnois, Stephanie Papalexion and Triada Robes.

He will be sadly missed by many nephews, nieces and cousins.

Louie was predeceased by his parents, sister Elefteria, brother Thomas and brothers-in-law Chris Robis, Steve Papalexion, Jimmy Smyrnois, Constantine Skypas and sister-in-law Annetta Skypas.

Funeral Service from St. DEMETRIOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH, 22 Head St., Hamilton on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 12 noon. Interment.

A special thank you to the compassionate doctors and nurses of Ward 8 West at the Hamilton General Hospital.
