GIRHINY, Msgr. John Girhiny Obituary | Print |

GIRHINY, Right Reverend John, B.A., M.Sc., PhD. -

Girhiny_John(1940 - 2014) - Called to the Lord on the 2nd of October 2014.

Beloved spiritual and life partner of Dr. Valerie-Dawn Ruddell Girhiny. Dearly loved brother of Margaret [Ted] Bisztriczky, uncle of Deborah and honourary uncle of Nancy Mortimer and Wendy Addison-Jones. Will be greatly missed by aunt Elaine Murray and extended family members.

Born in Welland, Ontario on September 22, 1940 to John and Jennie [Kramcsak] Girhiny. At an early age he began his life long service to the church at the altar of Our Lady of Hungary Roman Catholic Church in Welland where Monsignor Horvath was like a second father to him and later his advocate for ordination.

Monsignor John graduated from Notre Dame College School where his spiritual advisor and mentor was Father James Fogarty. He was a devout member of the Sodality.

Prior to ordination John and Valerie-Dawn were among the first extraordinary [eucharistic] ministers in the Diocese of Hamilton. John conducted Diocesan preparatory workshops for new candidates. With prayerful and ecclesiastical support from Bishop Isidore Borecky, Father John Girhiny [Hungarian] was ordained in September 1975 along with Father Andrew Kormanik [Slovak] and Father Terry Lozinsky [Ukrainian] by Bishop Michael Rusnak for The Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Toronto.

Fr. Girhiny had the distinct honour of serving in both the Ukrainian Eparchy of Toronto and the Slovak Eparchy of Saints Cyr and Methodius under the guidance of Bishop Isidore Borecky, Bishop Michael Rusnak, and Bishop John Pazak.

Fr John, a priest of the Byzantine Rite of the Roman Catholic Church, was granted biritual faculties by Rome November 21, 1986. His call was to unite Catholics of different rites within the university and other educational environments. Early on he became Director of the St. George Mission Society, a federally registered religious charity originally set up by Msgr. George Papp to provide services to parishes in need of priestly services and support.

In that capacity Fr John served numerous parishes with the longest periods of time at St Michael's Greek Catholic Church in Hamilton and Holy Ghost Slovak Greek Catholic Church in Welland. As a certified counseling supervisor and member of the Canadian Association of Pastoral Education Msgr. John established the SGMS Counseling Center.

Fr John had other special and dear to his heart responsibilities including Faithful Friar to the Knights of Columbus Upper Hamilton Council 5860 and chaplain at McMaster University Health Sciences. It is common within the Byzantine Rite for clergy to have related supportive vocations. Fr John was a certified teacher and supervisory officer. He taught at all levels of the educational continuum which includes elementary, secondary, tertiary and post graduate.

As a pure mathematician he was able to make significant contributions to mathematics education in the Province of Ontario. In that capacity he was a Director of the Ontario Leadership Seminars in mathematics education. He was an educational administrator in several capacities that included Professional Development Coordinator with The Ontario English Teachers' Association where he wrote, among others, the paper "On Catholicity" used by all Catholic school boards across the province, manager of Teacher Certification with the Ontario Ministry of Education, governor on the Board of Governors of The Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, Executive Director of the Ecumenical Study Commission on Public Education, Vice President of The Ontario Mathematics Commission, and President of S.E.E.N. [Society of Eastern European Nations] He was a member of the Canadian College of Teachers.

A special career highlight was the opportunity to represent and speak on behalf of the teachers of the world at The United Nations.

Msgr. John will rest for visitation at St John the Baptist Hungarian Greek Catholic Church in Welland from 2-4 pm Sunday, October 5th with Panachyda at 4 pm. conducted by Rt. Rev. Nicholas Deak, The Mitrophoric Archpriest Roman Galadza and Msgr. John's brothers in Christ.

Lying in state at the Cathedral Basilica of Christ The King, King Street West, Hamilton on Monday morning October 6th from 9:30 am until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11 am with Bishop Douglas Crosby OMI, Bishop of Hamilton, presiding.
