CARTWRIGHT, Bruce Reginald Cartwright, Obituary | Print |

CARTWRIGHT, Bruce Reginald -

Peacefully on the evening of May 1, 2015 at St. Joseph's Villa in Dundas, Bruce passed from this life, in his 92nd year.

Preceded in death by his parents, George and Ethel Cartwright, his brother George and his sister-in-law Marion Cartwright, his niece Carolyn and her husband Allan McArthur.

Left to mourn his passing are his niece Gay Kimpton and her husband Ted, grandniece Cathy Dilts and husband Dave, grandnephews John Kimpton and wife Kelly, Jeff McArthur and wife Judy, Glen McArthur and wife Dorothy, Tim McArthur and Peter Kimpton.

Born in Freelton in 1924, Bruce moved with his family to Hamilton as a youngster. In his teens, he became a proficient figure skater and it was suggested that dance lessons would enhance this natural ability. And so, he studied classical ballet first with Nancy Campbell in Hamilton and then with Boris Volkoff in Toronto.

In 1943, Bruce enlisted in the Canadian army and was part of a troupe of entertainers that toured Canada raising money for the war effort. Following the war, Bruce moved to New York City and continued dance and vocal studies there. He appeared in several Broadway musicals as part of the chorus and worked in early TV most notably as a regular on the variety show "Stop The Music" hosted by Bert Parks.

Eventually he was accepted as a member of the corps of the New York City Ballet Company under the famed George Balanchine. From there he moved to the U.K. where he danced with the Sadler Wells Ballet Company (now the Royal Ballet Company) and then on to the continent where he appeared as a singer/dancer at the Lido Club in Paris and at several other venues in France, Turkey and Germany.

Bruce returned to Canada in 1970 and worked in the restaurant business in the Niagara region until his retirement.

Cremation has taken place. On Friday, May 8th at 1:00 p.m., a graveside service and interment of ashes will take place in the urn garden of Grove Cemetery in Dundas, Ontario. Rev. Cathy Dilts, Bruce's grandniece will officiate.

Our family is deeply grateful to the staff of Oak Grove, St. Joseph's Villa, Dundas for their loving care of our uncle over the past five years.

DURANT, Ada Octavia (England) Durant, Obituary | Print |

DURANT, Ada Octavia (nee England) -

"The Lord giveth and the Lord hath taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord. (Job 1:21) "

For 81 years, the Lord loaned us one of his angels known as Ada. On Friday, May 1, 2015, he took his angel home, peacefully, where she is now resting holding hands with her husband of 56 years, John, and loved ones gone before us.

Cherished mother to daughters Lydia Williams, Carrie Ann Durant (Paul Schumacher) and son Dale Durant. Beloved Nana to Chloe-Rae and Jamie-Lee Williams, Step-Nana to Isabelle and Edward Schumacher and Great-Grandmother to her namesake Octavia, Chloe's daughter.

Ada is survived by her sister Edna Quenneville of Hamilton (the late John Hurdell), brother Winston Churchill England (Grace) and brother David England (the late Iona) of Nova Scotia. Ada is predeceased by her parents Robert and Lydia England of Nova Scotia, sister Marie Diggins of Hamilton and brothers Harry, Francis, Ernest, Tom, Berkley and sisters Florence, Hazel and Phyllis from Nova Scotia.

She is survived as well from the large, loving and caring England family of 24 nieces and nephews and 61 grandnieces and nephews across Canada as well as many nieces and nephews from the Durant side.

Ada shared her love of the Lord as a member of the Church of the Nativity (formerly St. Mary's Anglican) for over 50 years near her Rosedale home. She enjoyed being a member of the church "Bag Ladies" who work so hard to raise funds through church events for charities and church support.

We all benefited from Ada's sweet tooth and her passion for baking, a trait passed on to Carrie Ann, Chloe and soon to Octavia.

Ada enjoyed country and gospel music with John and many years of camping with a close crowd of friends. Although mostly a quiet woman, Ada could be heard singing the tunes around the campfires and parties that she so loved with the East Coast crowd.

The family would like to thank the staff of the 7th floor Nephrology Unit at St. Joseph's Charlton for their care and compassion of late, the palliative team with Drs. Woods, Lamb and Boyle, the wonderful Dialysis team at the St. Joseph's East unit as well as Dr. T. Kouroukis and staff of the Juravinski Cancer Centre who managed Mom's multiple myeloma, when diagnosed one and a half years ago.

A special thank you to the Walker and Dowling families who watched out for and looked after Mom and Dad for many years as wonderful neighbours. A special trip by Wayne and Nancy Tompkins of New Brunswick at this time, sure helped bring back great memories and a smile on Mom's face.

Our comfort is due to all our friends and family, who visited, called, prayed and thought of us through this journey.

Friends will be received at the DONALD V. BROWN FUNERAL HOME , 36 Lake Avenue Drive, Stoney Creek, Ontario on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the Church of the Nativity (1831 King St. E., Hamilton) on Monday, May 4, 2015 at 10 a.m. Interment.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice, 277 Stone Church Rd. E., Hamilton, ON L9B 1B1, would be greatly appreciated by the family.
