MAYERS, Bernard (Harry) Vincent Mayers, Obituary | Print |

MAYERS, Bernard (Harry) Vincent -

May 19, 1925 - October 18, 2014

We regret to announce the recent passing of Bernie Mayers at the Exeter Villa on Saturday, October 18, 2014, in his 90th year.

Prior to his stay at the Villa, he and his wife, Amy, of 69 years (deceased September 2012), lived at Grand Cove Estates in Grand Bend on Lake Huron for 26 years.

While living in Grand Bend, Bernie liked to play pool and snooker and was featured in the local newspaper after winning a tournament. He played cards and also liked to read. His favourite hockey team was the Montreal Canadiens and he could be found on Saturday nights cheering them on.

Bernie enjoyed giving dog treats to the Jack Russell Terrier that often visited his property on its daily walks in Grand Bend, then later at Exeter Villa he warmly welcomed visits by "Rupert", a white Shih Tzu.

For a time when Bernie lived in Selkirk along Lake Erie, he maintained a convenience store with a large area which included a pool table, snooker table, shuffle board and jukebox for the entertainment of customers, family and friends.

In 1949, he built his own house on Victoria Street in Waterdown, then shortly thereafter sold it and moved to a new subdivision in east Hamilton as his family continued to grow. During those summers on Taylor Avenue, he would set up a circular above-ground pool in the backyard. To make it deeper, he dug out the centre and then added a slide. In the winter he would flood the yard to make a skating rink. The neighbourhood bordered on the Red Hill Bowl which offered endless outdoor activities.

For many years he worked in the lab at American Can Company, then for a short time with Dofasco in Hamilton. Bernie was mechanically inclined and could fix or repair just about anything from an automobile to a toaster and everything in between. Wherever he lived, he took pride in keeping his property in tip top shape with manicured grass, shrubs, flowers and trees.

Bernie is survived by his children Carolyn (Reg) Mills, Dianna (Brian) Holtzhauer, Janice (Fred) King, Rick Mayers, Jim Mayers and Roger Mayers, but sadly was predeceased by his daughter Sandra VanBrocklin.

He is also survived by grandchildren Cheryl, Greg, Jason and Amber and great-grandchildren Kieffer, Courtney, Quintin, Jordan and Jacob.

He was also predeceased by grandchildren Sean and Jessica, and great-grandchild Kaylee.

Bernie was a hard working man and always willing to help anyone.

Cremation has taken place. Private family service to be held in future.

LOVE, Dr. William 'Bill' Love Obituary | Print |

LOVE, Dr. William Robert 'Bill' -

Love_William_BillUnexpectedly at Joseph Brant Hospital, Burlington, on Friday, October 17, 2014 at the age of 93.

Beloved husband of Aileen Love. Loving father of William Love (Jane), Bob Love (Kathy), Margaret Tracz (Robert) and Barbara Love (Henry). Born and raised in Hamilton, Bill practised in Hamilton and Burlington for 44 years. He was one of the founders of Joseph Brant Hospital. He loved his work and his patients and they certainly loved him. Bill was greatly admired by all who knew him and served as an inspiration to many.

As hard as he worked, there was always time for play - skiing, golf, travel or a good game of cards. Our family will always treasure the memory of our times together, whether around the table at family celebrations, at the cottage in Muskoka or racing down the ski hills in Keystone, Colorado.

Retirement never slowed Bill down. Every minute was filled with activity, in particular in the companionship of others. He loved to laugh and he did it a lot. Bill was married for 70 years to the love of his life, Aileen. It was her love and devotion that was truly his greatest joy.

It was Bill's wish that there be no formal funeral service. We know there are many who will take a moment to remember him in their own way. Arrangements out of Burlington.

Those wishing to make a donation in Bill's memory are asked to please consider the Salvation Army or Joseph Brant Hospital.
