TURNER, Shirley Mae Turner, Obituary | Print |

TURNER, Shirley Mae -

At home on Friday, 21st of November, 2014 in her 81st year, passed away, after a long valiant struggle with ovarian cancer for over seventeen years.

She will be sorely missed by her long time companion, Bill Boxall.

Shirley had served as a volunteer for almost 14 years with the Canadian Cancer Society at the Juravinski Cancer Centre. During that period she gathered several friends to provide hundreds of tie-backs, hats and Afghans for cancer patients and enjoyed the companionship with many other volunteers and hospital staff. Talking with and encouraging patients, gave her special pleasure.

Heartfelt thanks goes out to Dr. J. Mazurka and his staff of the Juravinski Cancer Centre, enabling her to travel extensively between many well designed chemotherapy treatments. Appropriate equipment made available through CAP was most useful. Caring palliative support was made available by Dr. M. Slaven. The professionalism of VON nurse, Nadia, was exceptional. The caring expertise of Dr. C. Mielke helped immensely. St. Elizabeth Health Care and CBI qualified staff made her last weeks as comfortable as possible.

Cousin Iva, travelled from New Brunswick and put her own life on hold to provide much needed 24 hour support and companionship. Shirley Rehn was also there when needed to provide friendly encouragement.

Cremation has already taken place.

Thanks to all those who prayed for her. For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
