His nieces and nephews, Christen, Gregory and Breanne Bryl, Jeannine (Campbell) and Jason (Diakiw), all of whom he loved dearly and spoiled with no boundaries, will miss him very much.

He will also be remembered by his great nephews and niece Kyla, Connor and Tyler (Campbell). He was predeceased by his father, George Shanahan and will be missed by his step-father John.

Finally, to the nurses at St. Peter’s hospital; To each and every one of you who cared for our Greg, your kindness and compassion will never be forgotten. To the doctors, especially Dr. Taniguchi, thank you for the kindness you showed Greg and his family during this most difficult journey.

The Funeral Celebration of his life will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, May 15th at St. Francis Xavier Church, 304 Hwy #8, Stoney Creek. Burial to follow.

SALMON, Brigadier General (Ret'd) Leonard Marshall -

Salmon_LeonardLen left this world suddenly in his 83rd year on Sunday, May 6, 2012, while awaiting surgery for a heart condition. He was surrounded by his family, who loved him immeasurably.

Len has gone to join his treasured wife Lola, who passed away last autumn, to continue their amazing love affair of 62 years (and counting).

Len was the proud, devoted and cherished father of Jim (Mary), Brian (Anita), Lorrie Bylhouwer (Bill), Tara Lawson, Judi Jedemann (Tom), Richard (Bethany) and Christie (Rolf).

He’ll be sorrowfully missed by his grandchildren Anna (Charles), Michael (Denise), Dan (Marilao), Brian (Amy), Allison, Joe (Samantha), Chris (Emily), Ellie, Andrew and Hanna, great-grandchildren Hailee, Jack, Jenny and Elizabeth, his loving sister Beverly Ling (Jim), and numerous nieces, nephews and close friends.  Len was predeceased by his much-loved parents Leonard and Ellen.

Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Len graduated from St. Catharines Collegiate and obtained an industrial engineering certificate at New York State University in Buffalo. He pursued a rewarding and multi-faceted career with an emphasis on industrial engineering and manufacturing.

Throughout his life, Len was dedicated to serving his country as a member of Canada's Armed Forces Reserves, and in particular with the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery. He joined the Army Cadets at age 13, while his father fought overseas in World War II. In 1947 he enlisted with the 44th Field Artillery Regiment in St. Catharines, Ontario. He began as a Gunner and advanced through the enlisted and then officer ranks to command successively the 10th Field Battery, the 57th Field Regiment and the 56th Field Regiment, all of which were based in Niagara and Brantford.

Ultimately he was promoted to Brigadier-General and Commander of the entire Central Militia Area. In that capacity he hosted Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at the "Royal Salute" in 1984, a spectacular military tattoo watched live by a capacity crowd at CNE Stadium and over a million television viewers in Canada and the U.K.

Soon after retiring from active service in 1984, he was appointed Honourary Lieutenant-Colonel and then Honourary Colonel of the 56th Field Regiment, a position he held until 2008. His long career was reflected in his Canadian Forces Decoration with 4 bars, representing over 60 years of service. He was one of an exceptionally few soldiers to achieve that distinction.

For 20 years, Len was a member of the Board of Governors of the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires, Hamilton Division, including a term as Chairman. He was active in many organizations relating to his military pursuits, including the Royal Niagara Military Institute, the Royal Canadian Legion and the Royal Canadian Artillery Association. He was also an avid private pilot and a proud member of the Probus association of retirees.

But above all, Len's priority was his family. His pride and joy in all of them was boundless. He was unfailingly understanding, loving, kind and selfless. Len was unquestioning in his support, and always there to help in any way he could. He was an essential part of their lives and a mainstay at any important gathering of their friends. "Where's Len?" was a question immediately posed by anyone attending a get-together where he was absent. The loss felt by Len's family is incalculable.

Len's family sends a heartfelt thank you to Father Peter Rowe, Len and Lola's spiritual caregiver and a true friend to them and the family. The family would also like to thank the many health care professionals who helped Len during his recent illness.

The Funeral Mass will take place at St. Alexander's Roman Catholic Church, 50 Pelham Town Square, Fonthill on Friday, May 11th at 11:30 a.m. There will be a private Rite of Committal on a later date.

If desired, and as an expression of sympathy, donations in Leonard's memory to St. Felix Centre at www.stfelixcentre.ca or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.

Age 89, beloved of wife Mary for 56 years, brother of Sal and Gladys and Nick, Father of 5, grandfather and great-grandfather, venerable body winding down but not diseased, passed peacefully asleep in his own home at dawn of Cinqo de Mayo, his wits and dignity intact.

Born 14 July 1922 to Ukrainian Immigrants, a decorated P.O. of WWII's Battle of the North Atlantic, he then achieved degrees in both Mechanical Engineering and Commercial Arts, patented and sold the "Flat-top Kettle" and led the micro-animated display industry. With carpentry in the blood, Harry built and sold boats and raised the home which he shared.

Robust with many enthusiasms, he was sailor, photographer, artist, pilot, engineer, builder, audiophile, businessman, mountaineer, humanitarian and a concert guitarist that once played Massey Hall... left handed.

Whatever Harry did was done well. Throughout this exceptional diversity ran the love of family, scale models and the Railways. He promoted skill and craft and fun in all he touched in the community and shared laughter wherever he could. Great travels, Husband and Patriarch… you really lived.

An informal open-house Memorial is to be held in Harry's honour on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. at his home at 364 Old Mud Street, Stoney Creek, ON, L8J 1X1 (905) 560-0532. Family and good friends be welcome.
