NOVOSELAC, Mary -

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Mary Novoselac (nee Fosty), on Tuesday, April 18, 2012. During her last days, she was surrounded by family and comforted by her most loved hymns and scriptures. At 87 years, Mary lived a very full life.

She was born September 27, 1924 in Toronto to Anany and Palahna (nee Kozak) Fosty. Mary had an older brother, Peter (deceased) and a younger brother, William. Mary had fond memories of her parents and siblings; as an adult, she continued to cherish these relationships.

At age 28, Mary wed Stevan Novoselac (deceased), a hard-working Serbian immigrant whom she had met through the Slavic Pentecostal Church. The couple had three children: Robert, Rosemary (Miles) and Stevan Jr. Unfortunately, their marriage was shortened by Stevan’s early death to cancer at age 41.

As a single mother to three young children, long before it became commonplace, Mary relied on what would become her most memorable characteristics: a strong Christian faith grounded in prayer, single-mindedness, a willingness to take on any task, perseverance and resourcefulness. Mary always had enough love (and food!) for her growing family.

Besides her own family, Mary’s famous hospitality extended to friends and anyone in need. Everyone was welcome at her table. She served others with a love rooted in her faith. To those who knew her, she will always exemplify unwavering love and dedicated service to her Lord.

Mary lived independently until October 1, 2006, when she suffered a massive stroke, confining her to a wheelchair. Her incredibly positive attitude showed through to the staff at Heritage Green Nursing Home, who often commented on how sweet Mary was and how she never complained, even though the stroke had left her barely able to speak.

Although we mourn her loss here on earth, we rest in the knowledge that she is now with her Saviour.

Mary is survived by her three children: son Robert (Margaret) Novoselac, daughter Rosemary (Jim) Miles and son Stevan Jr. (Marianne) Novoselac. Also survived by grandchildren: Kristel, Sonja, Erica (Isaac), Victoria, James, Alyssa, Charity, Rachel, Christina and Liberty. She also has one great-granddaughter, Hannah.

Mary’s life will be celebrated at Bethel Gospel Tabernacle (1355 Upper Wellington Street, Hamilton) Monday, April 23 at 11 a.m. Interment to follow.

Mary often quoted this verse as she faced life’s challenges head on: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13).
