ALEXANDER, Vesta Helena Elizabeth (Davey) -
Lived a long life of grace and compassion - and her passing is a reminder to all who knew her that a life worth living is a life lived in service of others.
As her family and friends mourn her, they also look forward to how their own lives will in many ways be lived in how Vesta lived hers - in taking joy in life's simple pleasures and celebrating the importance of the people around you. Reflected as acts of joy and kindness, those moments will keep Vesta alive in the hearts and minds of people blessed to share her life.
Vesta passed peacefully, with family at her side February 20, 2013 in Belleville. She was predeceased by Everett, her parents Bessie (Speck) and Clarence Davey, as well as her sister Doris. For nearly a century, Vesta's concern for the health and welfare of those who were part of her life defined who she was and set a clear direction for the moral compass with which she navigated life's rich complexities. It was a life characterized by untold gifts of giving - advice, guidance, direction - that positively shaped the character of people around her.
Born in Actinolite on February 28, 1916, Vesta's life in Eastern Ontario carried on the traditions of her United Empire Loyalist forebears. It was a life defined by a clear work ethic, but tempered by a compassionate commitment to family and friends, church and community. A Graduate of the Belleville Business School, Vesta married Everett (Bogie) Alexander on June 22, 1946 and together they busied themselves creating a vibrant and vital life together. That life was indeed adventurous and included time in Actinolite - where the couple ran a general store - Bancroft, Madoc and Tweed. Vesta worked for Naylor Insurance in Madoc. and was the postmaster in Tweed.
A long-time member of the Anglican Church, Vesta was a strong supporter of the Anglican Church Women and as part of her church life launched a youth group and contributed strength of voice to the St. James choir. Vesta was also a long-time Rebekah - a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The IOOF's three pillars - Friendship, Love, and Truth - epitomized her value system. She also took great pride in her membership in the Order of Eastern Star. She loved life in Eastern Ontario passionately and counted golfing, boating and the outdoors as central elements of a life lived well. She knew the region well, its places and its personalities and she loved nothing better than a fall or summer tour “around the lake“.
Vesta and Everett were strong believers in family and raised four wonderful daughters, nurturing from young girls into women with families of their own: Janice Lewis (Lloyd), Ann Riddell (Don , deceased) Gail Alexander (Linda) and Patricia Whitelaw (Bill). She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren Tami (Cory), Kari (Kris), Kris (Meghan), Kevin (Adria), Liam, Moira and Morgan. As well, she will be missed by great grandchildren Miquela, Bailey, Tori, Jake, Conor, Jack and Helena.
Vesta will be interred beside Bogie in a spring celebration of her life.

FLEMING, Betty Louisa (née Stanfield) -
Born 18 January 1921, died 20 February 2013, at the age of 92, peacefully surrounded by her family and caregivers at the Perley Rideau Veterans' Health Centre, Ottawa, ON. Despite declining health Betty maintained a sunny disposition and an acute sense of humour to the very end.
Predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Paul E. Fleming, her beloved daughter Martha (Mardi), her parents Alfred and Louisa Stanfield, her brother and sisters, Lionel, Winifred (Ted), her beloved Dorothy (Dorrie) and Marjorie. She will be sorely missed by her surviving children, their partners and families, Peter (Diane), Louise (Sibyl), Chris (Deirdre), Loretta (Bill), Jean (Srdjan, Marko and Jesse), Lee (stepdaughter Mia) and Mardi's widower Marcel Gingras (Semra). She will be missed by her grandchildren, step-grandchildren and great grandson, Oliver. She was Mom to her Vietnamese family Tum and Tu Tranh and family.
Betty was born and raised in Toronto, the youngest of five children of Louisa (née Clifford) and Alfred Stanfield. She had a happy childhood, and often told her children stories of her wonderful mother who died when Betty was only 20.
After the war, Betty met her future husband Paul at IBM, where they both worked. Betty and Paul moved to Belleville with their seven children in 1959. Betty was an active member of her community, including St. Joseph's Catholic Church. A trained singer and piano player, Betty loved all things musical; her children grew up learning to sing, accompanied by “Betty at the piano“ and this tradition continued with her grandchildren.
A social justice activist, Betty was a proud member of the Council of Canadians, Amnesty International, her local food bank and other groups that helped those in need. After retirement, she and Paul were fortunate to travel the globe, always happy to come home to the “best country in the world.“ Betty lived in Belleville until 2007, continuing to travel to a warm destination every winter (Cuba was her favourite) and to Prince Edward Island, her second home, every summer. She also enjoyed many visits from family and friends, and was especially pleased to spend many weekends with her niece, Jean Riettie. She visited her children in Ottawa often, celebrating birthdays and holidays and enjoying “sleep-overs.“
In early 2007, she moved to Unitarian House in Ottawa. Being closer to her children, and her oldest friends, Gertrude Mantha and Monica Mikula, made moving much easier to accept. Betty had a great sense of humour and real joie de vivre. She took pleasure in everyday events and the beauty of the natural world. She was an outstanding role model for growing old with grace. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Many thanks to the staff of Unitarian House, CCAC, OWCS, and the Perley Rideau Health Centre.
A funeral service will take place in Ottawa, ON, on Saturday, February 23rd. Her ashes will be interred in Belleville in the spring and a celebration of her life will take place at that time. A further celebration of her life with her PEI family and friends will take place this summer. .
Betty requested that donations be made in her name to Amnesty International or Unitarian House of Ottawa.
