TURNER, Irene 'Queenie' (nee Bridge) -

Turner_QueeniePassed away at Hastings Manor on Sunday, March 11th in her 93rd year.

She was born in Gillingham, England, in June 1920, the first child of Arthur and Doris (Corby) Bridge, with whom she emigrated to Canada when less than a year old. Known as Queenie to family and friends, she attended grade school at county school #21, and high school at BCI where she was a popular member of the school band. It was at BCI that she met Frederick “Ted“ Johnson, whom she married in 1940.

Seven years later, with two young children in tow, (daughter Beverley and son Rick) she returned to England when Ted joined the Royal Air Force. Her youngest child, Evelyn, was born in England in 1949. After her divorce from Ted in 1957, Irene returned to Belleville, where she found employment at the A&P store on Pinnacle St. There she became acquainted with much of the local population as a consequence of her congenial and outgoing nature.

In 1960 she married Eddy Turner, and soon began enjoying summer weekends at the cottage they built on Devil's Lake near Bancroft. After retirement, she and Ed became snowbirds, wintering in Florida, and spending their summers at a mobile home near CFB Trenton.

Following Eddy's death in 1981, Irene shared accommodation with her lifelong friend Mabel (Adams) Foster who had also been recently widowed. This happy arrangement persisted until 1997, when the onset of Alzheimer's disease brought it to an end. Thereafter, Irene lived in a senior's residence on Bridge St. E., and at the Richmond Retirement Home on N. Front St., before moving to Hastings Manor in 2006.

She was predeceased by three of her four brothers: Rex of Puerto Rico, Ralph of Brockville, and Alan of Belleville, as well as her half-sister Betty of Whitby, and daughter Evelyn Schneider. She is lovingly remembered by brother Arthur of Qualicum Beach, BC, sister-in-law June of Brockville, daughter Beverley and husband Jack Ball of England, son Rick and wife Gail Johnson of Grand Bend, former daughter-in-law Joy Johnson of Belleville, nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She will be fondly remembered as the most pleasant, friendly, generous and loving person one could ever hope to meet, and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Service will be held at Eastminster United Church on Thursday, March 22nd. at 1:00 p.m., Rev. Ed Bentley officiating, followed by a reception for family and friends at the church hall. Irene's cremains will later be interred in a private service.
