WANSBROUGH, Robert Alexander 'Sandy' –

Wansbrough_RobertDied in Lindsay, after two years of very poor health, with his family by his side early on Saturday, July 25, 2015 in Lindsay.

Sandy was beloved husband of Marg, with whom he celebrated 50 years of marriage in October 2014. Sandy was father of Paula, wife to Paul, and Rob (Joe), husband to JoAnne. Sandy was lovingly known as “Dandy” to his four grandchildren, Calim, Sydney, Jude and Sam. He will be sorely missed by his sisters, Jean and Ruth, as well as nieces and nephews, brothers- and sisters-in-law on both sides of the family, and a wide circle of friends, neighbours and community members.

Sandy was a teacher, farmer, pilot, volunteer and friend. He began teaching at age 18 and moved to General Vanier Vocational Institute in Oshawa in his mid-twenties where he worked for 30 years. There he was an important mentor to many young men, with some of his closest friends being former students Roly (Ron) LaTulippe and Jim McKnight. While teaching at Vanier, Sandy and his family built a farm near Bethany and worked the land for 22 years, developing strong ties with neighbours in that area. Sandy retired from farming and teaching and moved to Sturgeon Lake with Marg, it is there that his advocacy for the welfare of the water, its wildlife and the environment became a driving force in his life. Beyond volunteering for the Kawartha Region Conservation Authority (KRCA), Water Watch and Kawartha Protect Our Waters (KPOW), he also was also very active with St. John’s Ambulance’s pet therapy program, visiting local nursing homes with his dogs, Cricket and Rainbow; and local libraries’ “Read to the Dog” program.

Other life-long hobbies included flying, skiing and art. As a pilot and airplane enthusiast he built his own ultralight with which he performed “forced landings” in interesting places. Sandy also was an avid downhill skier and member of the ski patrol where he was awarded for high standards of safety excellence on the slopes and in patrol competitions. As an artist his love of history and folklore was often expressed through his talented watercolours, endless volumes of memorized poetry and engaging storytelling.

Visitation will be held at the Mackey Funeral Home, 33 Peel Street, Lindsay, Ontario on Monday from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 40 Russell Street East, Lindsay on Tuesday, July 28th at 11:00 a.m. Cremation to follow.

Margaret was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. In 1947, she graduated from the University of Toronto, where she'd majored in English Literature. Having obtained her teaching certificate, Margaret then accepted a position at the high school in Omemee, Ontario.

While in Omemee, she met her future husband, George Stephenson (1915 - 2005) who, together with his brothers, operated Stephenson's Feed Mill.
