LUNDRIGAN, Jemima Black (Taylor) Lundrigan Obituary | Print |

LUNDRIGAN, Jemima Black (Taylor) -

Lundrigan_Jemima(February 24, 1924 - December 14, 2014)

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland on February 24th, 1924, to her parents Sarah and Patrick Taylor and named after her mother’s loving aunt Jemima Black.

She was the loving sister to her seven siblings who have gone before her Patrick (Janetta), Elizabeth (Carl), Frank (Ena), Sadie (Jimmy), Michael, Joseph, Margaret.

Beloved Mum to her children, Thomas (deceased), Sheena (Anthony), and Geri (Damian). She will forever be cherished as Nana J to her grandchildren, Jeff (Nadine), Sarah, Kristen (Mark), Joanne (Drew) and to her great grandchildren, Breandan, Ryan, Teleri, Ailis, Gabriel, Natalie and Evan.

Dear cousin to Mary and her family in Scotland. And, to all her nieces and nephews that she loved so dearly, she was Auntie Mimi.

She lived a full life - After serving in the Land Army in Scotland, she joined the British Navy in June 1943 and served in England with Women’s Royal Naval Service (popularly known as WRENS) at Pembroke. She spent most of her years of service at St. Marks Base in Chelsea, London and was stationed in Dover on D-Day. This was a particularly dangerous assignment because Dover was used as a decoy, drawing the fire of the enemy. She was discharged on October 20, 1945.

After the war she married Thomas Lundrigan, who she had met during the war while he was serving with the Canadian Navy in England. In 1947, as a war bride she joined him and began a life in Canada. She faced many challenges in this new life including the loss of her first-born child due to illness just before his second birthday.

She made many decisions that were not common among women at that time and stood strong and determined to make a life for herself and her daughters. She moved to Toronto and began working for a specialty fasteners company, a supplier to the construction trade. In this male dominated environment she was know as Scotty. Through her hard work and tenacity, she gained widespread respect and in the later years of her career, she helped a friend start two other successful companies.

At the age of 58 she bought her first home and relocated near her daughters in Mississauga, a special time for her grandchildren as they could pass her door on the way home from school where she would leave them treats and notes in their secret place. After she retired at 65, she volunteered at Credit Valley Hospital for more than 20 years.

At the age of 87 her declining health forced her to make a change. Always accepting the realities of life, she fully embraced the move to a retirement community – Lookout Ridge in Fonthill. Here, her last three remaining years were full of happiness, friendship and a renewed sparkle.

Fortunately her final illness was brief but the family will be forever grateful for the kindness and support we received from everyone at Lookout Ridge who always seemed to know how to help not only Mum but her family, the wonderful Paliative Care Team who guided her through and for the loving care she got each and every day from her Personal Support Workers. Their visits were a highlight of Mum’s final days and their kindness and care will never be forgotten.

Throughout her life she was an example to us all. Even in her final days she was filled with wonder of what was to come. But we will miss her in this life. Her heart and home were always open to anyone in need and her commitment to her family will leave a lengthy legacy of strength, courage and love.

The Funeral Mass will take place on Thursday, December 18th at 11 am, at St. Alexander’s Roman Catholic Church, 50 Pelham Town Square, Fonthill. A reception will follow in the Church hall.

As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to any local children charity of your choice.
