COONEY, Larry Cooney Obituary | Print |

COONEY, Larry -

Peacefully, proudly and on his own terms, Larry Cooney passed away in his 77th year on December 16, 2013, embraced by the love of his family and under the tender and loving care of his beloved wife, Carol, daughter, Jill, and son-in-law David Lang.

He died at the Intermountain Medical Center, Salt Lake City, Utah after a brief illness.

Larry and Carol met 59 years ago at the Welland Pool on Cross Street, where she was a lifeguard and he a swimmer. Together, they shared an extraordinary life marked by love, adventure, selflessness and happiness that shaped the strong foundation that became the central interest in their lives: family.

Larry was exceedingly proud of his family. The joy of his life was interacting with his children and grandchildren, especially on the special occasions when they all gathered with him and Carol. He also took great pleasure in volunteering unsolicited family updates to any who would listen.

Larry was the dearly loved father of Jay and his wife, Megan, of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; Todd and his wife, Tina, of Stoney Creek, and Jill and her husband, David Lang, of Salt Lake City, Utah. He took great pride in his role as grandfather and cherished Will, Jack and Drew Lang, Walker, Caroline, Eve, Elle and Ben Cooney. He was the beloved brother of Den Cooney, and his wife, Dianne, Pat Cooney, and his wife, Flori; beloved brother-in-law of Colleen Richardson and her husband, Glenn and Gaye Fuller, and her husband, Patrick. He will also be missed by several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Larry was predeceased by his parents, Jim and Muriel Cooney, and his in-laws, Harold and Marion Cudney.

Larry and Carol were partners in life and in business, running the Cudney Funeral Chapel in Welland and the Stonehouse-Whitcomb Funeral Home in Grimsby for more than two decades. During this time, he helped thousands of Niagara families during some of the most difficult times of their lives.

Larry was very active with the National Selected Morticians association and was elected president in 1989, only the second Canadian elected to head the international organization. Larry was also past-president of the Ontario Funeral Directors Association.

Retirement in the early 1990s triggered relocation to Paradise Valley, Arizona, where Larry and Carol became fond of sitting outside and watching in wonder the beautiful sunsets over the mountains. Too far from family, they moved back to Niagara, building a home in Crystal Beach on a piece of land where the amusement park once stood. Summers on the beach surrounded by laughter, football games in Lake Erie, great stories, family dinners and illegal top secret early evening golf cart rides with his grandchildren brought sheer joy to Larry and Carol. These special moments made summer their favourite time the year.

Larry took retirement as seriously as he did his more than 30 years in funeral service. He and Carol were partners as world travellers, visiting more than two dozen countries on five continents. He had an insatiable sense of adventure and appetite for experiencing different cultures and people.

Larry was very active in minor sports and high school sports in Welland, coaching his two sons to an All-Ontario Basketball title in 1977. He spent more than 20 years as an integral part of the Welland Tribune Basketball Tournament, heading the all-star and MVP selection committee. Regardless of the sport, regardless of the team, Larry loved to watch a competitive game.

Cremation has taken place. The Cooney family will hold a Celebration of his Life.  It will be this summer of course, his favourite time of the year.
