JOHNSON, James Bancroft 'Jim' - Of Douro-Dummer, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 19, 2017. He was 95.
Jim was born in Toronto on November 16, 1921 to parents Chrissie and James L. Johnson. A hard worker from the start, he began his career in farming then, like many young men of his time, volunteered to join the Canadian Armed Forces. Shortly before being deployed to Europe in 1942, he met his future wife, Edna, when he asked her for a dance one night in Ajax.
After the war, Jim and Edna were married and moved to Douro to build their home and family. Jim proudly resided in that same home for 65 years. Jim worked for Wonder Bread for many years, delivering bread with his trusty horse Ted. He later worked in maintenance for the Peterborough County Board of Education before retiring in 1986.
GARDEZI, Dr. Hasson Nawaz - Professor Emeritus, Algoma University - Passed away April 19, 2017 at the age of 84 in Peterborough, following a brief illness.
Graduate of Washington State University, he was an internationally recognized author and editor of many books and articles on social and political developments in Pakistan and Asia.
Son of Syed Muhammed Nawaz and Saeedah Gardezi of Multan, Pakistan. He is survived by his wife Rosalie and his children Tariq, Fauzia, Shahid, Shella and Jaffer, as well as his brother Dr. Ali Raza and his sister Qudsia.

Born in Stellarton, Nova Scotia, Laurine was a coal miner's daughter who relocated to Ontario with her husband, Norman, and their future with one cardboard suitcase.
Although having been a teacher in Nova Scotia she was a homemaker in Ontario and focused on her family, friends and her hobbies, weaving, doll making and her dogs - Coltan, Seamus, Greggie and Shelley.
She will be dearly missed by her husband Norman, children Nicole (Ariel), Jason (Pamela) and Natalie (Tricia) and her grandchildren Abigail and Jessica, Riley and Lucas and Hannah and Autumn.

MARSHALL, Margot Anne - The labour movement has lost a strong Sister with the passing over the Easter weekend of Margot Marshall, 68, of Peterborough.
She was the backbone of the Peterborough & District Labour Council, serving as its secretary for 14 years. Margot always worked behind the scenes, organizing Day of Mourning, the Labour Day picnic and the annual Labour Appreciation dinner, in addition to public meetings and rallies.
Her Peterborough working career started in 1977 at Alfa-Laval. In 1986 she went on to work at St. Joseph's Hospital and then moved to Peterborough Regional Health Centre when the hospitals merged. She retired from PRHC in 2013. She was active in her union - Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) Local 345 serving as steward, treasurer, recording secretary and remained one of its delegates to the Labour Council until her passing.
McVICAR, Catherine Janet 'Cathy' - Passed away at Empress Gardens, Peterborough on Monday, April 17, 2017, at age 77 after a lengthy illness.
Survived by her sister Susan Speer (Bill) and nieces Janet, Laura and Mary.
Cathy grew up in Port Credit and attended UWO where she received a degree in journalism. After working on newspapers in Barrie and Ottawa, she moved to Toronto and did editorial work for Nelson’s and Copp Clark. Cathy moved frequently while working in Toronto.

KINDY, Phyllis Edna - Passed away in Hastings, Ontario on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017, at 91 years of age.
Phyllis was born in Dauphin, Manitoba where she met and married Alden Kindy. They later moved to Niagara Falls where Phyllis worked for many years in the Hospitality and Tourism Industry.
Phyllis's passion was to "help the ladies". She tirelessly cared for friends and among other awards, she received the Ontario Volunteer Service Award for an incredible 45 years of volunteering with GNGH and Dorchester Manor.
