PITCHER, Jean Marguerite -
Wife, mother, physiotherapist, and community volunteer, lived a full and active life, much loved by her family and friends. Jean died quietly in her sleep on Monday, February 20, 2012, at the age of 91.
Jean is survived by her 6 children, 14 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Jean was the beloved wife of the late Dr. Herbert Vere Pitcher, who died young in a tragic car collision in 1965. Her children, now grown, are: Terry Pitcher, his wife Dianne Evans, and their son William, Sherry Pitcher Thompson, her husband Gus Thompson, with offspring Tim, Robin, her husband Marcos Soriano, and grandchild, Nigella, Larry Pitcher, his wife Nalu Vit Picher, and their daughters, Olivia and Cali, Gary Pitcher, his wife Wendy, and sons Jonathan and David, Holly Pitcher Jones, her husband Greg Jones, and their offspring Christopher, Andy and Jenny, Kelvin Pitcher, his wife Carolyn, and their offspring Alison, James, Adam, and Katie.
Jean was the longest serving physiotherapist ever in Ontario and the association voted to give her honourary lifetime membership after she was over 70, and still an active member. Jean was born in North Bay, Ontario on December 10, 1920. She had two sisters, Helen and Mabel, and many well-loved nieces and nephews, in Canada and in the United States.
Jean’s father, Lawrence Hunter, ran a meat-packing business in North Bay, providing quality meats to the railways and across Northern Canada. Her father died young, and her mother, Winnifred Hunter, ran the business herself for some time, then sold the business and moved the family to Toronto, where she developed patterns and fashions for the Ladies Home Journal, and became a Grand Matron of the Eastern Star.
Jean studied physiotherapy at the University of Toronto, then joined the women’s auxiliary, working as a physio in Victoria, and Saint Anne de Bellevue, first helping children recovering from polio, then with soldiers recovering from war injuries.
Jean married Herbert Vere Pitcher, a physician, in 1945 at the end of the war, and they spent their honeymoon in Mexico, and Jean loved the countryside and people there. They settled in Toronto and her first three children, Terry, Sherry, and Larry were born there. Vere worked first as a family physician on Toronto Island, then in tuberculosis research, and Jean worked as a physio and also helped manage her husband’s medical clinic.
Larry was born in fragile health and had to be carried on a pillow and fed with an eye-dropper, and often spent time in a home oxygen tent. However, all survived and thrived, and Jean and Vere moved to the small town of Alliston, to give their children a better quality of life.
In Alliston, Jean and Vere had three more children, Gary, Holly, and Kelly. Jean and Vere gave their children an idyllic childhood. They lived on the main street of town, above the medical clinic. Alliston, at that time, had less than 3,000 people, with quiet, tree-lined streets, and friendly neighbourhoods. Jean and Vere had purchased the lot next to the house, and were out late at night watering the skating rink so the kids could skate in the yard at home.
The back yard went all the way down to the Boyne river, so many summer afternoons were spent in forbidden pastimes such as climbing trees and playing in the river, and winter fun tobogganing on the hill. Pets abounded, dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, pheasants, even raccoons and a crocodile at various times.
Both grandmothers lived in Alliston, Vera Pitcher in the same house with the family, and Winnifred Hunter lived half way between the family home and school, making her home a welcome spot to stop for cookies, piano playing, or to help in the garden. Summers were spent in Muskoka, largely swimming and boating in the lake, and building forts in the forest. Jean stayed at the cottage with the kids, and Vere came up on weekends, whenever possible.
Weekends were full of water-skiing, boat rides, ice cream, and barbeques. Jean and Vere had interesting friends from all over, and travelled to far-off countries every second year. Jean’s sister Helen lived next door at the cottage for many years, so there were lots of cousins, particularly Murray, Susan and Nancy McQuigge, and Bob, Sandy, and Jamie Sinclair, and their families, and many friends along the waterfront to swim and ski with. Many lifetime friendships were built among the waterfront families, and with our neighbours on Wenleigh Court in Mississauga.
Often on long weekends, Jean and Vere packed up all the family for an expedition to Iowa or Minnesota to surprise the American Pitchers, Vere’s brother Arlo, much-loved wife Elsie, and cousins Pat, Steve and Sue Sue (Barbara) with a quick visit. Vere and Jean’s medical clinic in Alliston was very different then. They had their own X-ray and fluoroscopy machines, with the images developed by Jean and Vere in a basement darkroom. They had their own lab, examining samples through a microscope.
They ran a small dispensary pharmacy in the clinic. Jean had a fully equipped physio suite, with diathermy and ultrasound and other equipment. Jean not only ran her own physio clinic, but also helped run the medical clinic and dispensary, along with the nurses, and was director of the physio clinic at the Alliston hospital.
Days were long, with Vere out doing operations by 7 am, then visiting his hospital patients. Everyone came home for lunch, then there were afternoon and evening office hours in the clinic, then late-night house calls. Vere was a gifted diagnostician, and stayed in touch with researchers in Toronto and further afield, so both of them travelled often to conventions, keeping up with their fields.
Jean and Vere helped build the fund-raising and approvals for the new Stevenson Memorial Hospital in Alliston, which was opened by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, the Honourable Earle Rowe. Jean was very active in community affairs, on the Board of Directors of physios for Ontario, on the Alliston Town Council, and involved in Home and School, the school board for Banting Memorial High School, and the Eastern Star.
Three generations of the family sang in the Alliston United Church choir - Jean, her mother, Winnifred, and her nephew Murray McQuigge. Jean also sang with the Leslie Bell Choir in her youth, and with the Bala, Muskoka United Church choir in her older years. All this was cut short when her husband, Vere, was killed in a tragic car collision. Jean found herself a widow at the age of 45, with six children from 6 to 17 to raise.
She sold the medical practice and moved the family to Mississauga, near Toronto. She went back to University, earned her certificate for teaching physiotherapy and rehabilitation at the University of Toronto, then taught in the medical school and worked at the Addiction Research Foundation in Toronto.
Jean bought a beautiful house and acreage in Mississauga, and a lot near La Paz in Mexico, and life settled down for a while. Then Jean remarried, disastrously, and subsequently divorced. Jean built a house on her lot in Mexico, near the beach. In later years, Jean drove diagonally across the continent twice a year, spending summers at her cottage in Bala, Muskoka, spring and fall in Alberta with the western wing of the family, and winters in her home on the ocean in La Paz, Baja California, Mexico.
In Mexico, Jean worked as a volunteer to improve rehabilitation services in Southern Baja California, and organized the donation and airlift (thanks to Air Canada) of unwanted physio equipment from across Ontario to help children with disabilities in La Paz. She worked with a translator to develop and deliver a rehabilitation training course in Spanish. Due to Jean’s efforts working with the community, and with support from the wife of the Governor, the first rehabilitation centre in that part of Mexico was built to help the children.
Once Jean hit her seventies, various ones of her children and friends helped out with the long distance driving, to and from Mexico. Jean sometimes took off unexpectedly to explore China, or Barcelona, or the castles of England, since she loved travel and adventure. She broke her arm at 75, swinging off the roll bar of her friend’s jeep while rocketing along, scooping seahorses out of the surf in Baja. Jean was an inspiration to many and loved by all who knew her well. She will be dearly missed.
A funeral service will be held in Alliston on Saturday, February 25th.
