RICHARDS, Dr. Alan John Richards - Obituary | Print |

RICHARDS, Dr. Alan John -

Richards_AlanAt home in Collingwood ON, on February 24, 2015, in his 97th year.

Son of the late Lila Singleton Richards (1977) and the late Dr. Gordon E. Richards (1949). Predeceased by brothers Stewart (1943) and Don (2001). Loved husband of the late Eunice Darrach Richards (2009). Loving father of Ann, Jamie (Lindsay), the late Tom (2014), Sheila (Bill Williams) and the late Beth (1969).

Proud grandfather of Jay Richards, Ben, Greg and Jackie Williams.

Born in Toronto, Al attended Upper Canada College and University of Toronto Schools. Al graduated from the University of Toronto School of Medicine in 1943.

While growing up, Al spent many wonderful summers on the Big Rideau Lake enjoying swimming, sailing and canoeing. These passions lasted a lifetime. Five years ago, Al, having refurbished his wooden canoe, went paddling at the cottage. Every summer, until a few years ago, he repaired and drove his 1959 cedar strip Peterborough boat on the waters of The Bay of Islands.

Al served in the Royal Canadian Navy in Halifax as a young doctor. Having met Eunice at St. Michael's Hospital, she a nurse and he a doctor, they married in July 1945. He took "his bride", a term he used throughout their 64 year marriage, to Halifax, Sudbury and Toronto.

In 1951, now specializing in radiology, the family moved to Regina, Saskatchewan where they spent ten wonderful years raising five children and meeting and enjoying many friends. Back in Toronto in 1961, Al began the process of owning and operating four private radiology offices. Al enjoyed his work immensely. He enjoyed the medical practice of radiology and the many people he met along the way including doctors, technicians and office staff. Al continued to practice radiology until he was 82.

During these years, Al contributed to his community as a member of the Rotary Club of Regina, Governor of Trinity College School, Port Hope, and member of Lawrence Park Community Church. He enjoyed the music of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra for many years and learned to play the cello in his fifties.

He jogged years before others joined the "jogging for fitness" routine. Fortunately, Eunice enjoyed many of Al's outdoor passions. They joined Craigleith Ski Club in 1961 and continued to ski there, Al into his eighties and Eunice into her seventies, able to experience many happy family occasions, including skiing with all four grandchildren. They sailed on their sailboat from the RCYC and in the North Channel. They skated together at the Granite Club, travelled, and enjoyed the company of many good friends on each excursion and many highlighted occasions.

Their home in Mulmur was a beautiful retreat, but the cottage in the Bay of Islands was Al's favourite place, where, again, family was always around and he was able to plant trees and indulge in his wood-working and "fixing things" interests. For Al, it wasn't a good day unless you had been working or playing hard. During the summer of 2014, Al was still planting trees at the cottage!

Al lived his full life with love and caring for his family. He was wise and offered advice only when asked or he felt it was imperative, such as telling his young, working children in the 1970s to invest in their future and retirement. He was constantly interested in learning, as evidenced with his new laptop computer at the age of 92. He was generous and modest and he was strong. Even in the past few weeks, he knew his own way. We will miss his leadership and the absolute comfort of knowing that he was always there for all of us.

A private family service will be held on Saturday February 28th in Collingwood. Interment in Toronto will be held privately at a later date.

Donations in Al's memory may be made to the ALS Society or the Leukemia Society and would be most appreciated by
the family

Alex was born to Alexander and Violet Tait in Wellington, Ontario, his "village of a thousand people". He never lost the folksy humour of his Huckleberry Finn upbringing. Alex was a gregarious, kind and fun-loving person always ready with a joke or a story. As a father, he was a Berenstein Bear Dad enthusiastically leading his children into adventures that provided endless tales for reminiscing. Alex played baseball and hockey as a teenager, and these sports made him a Toronto Maple Leaf and Blue Jays fan for life.

Alex loved art, music and poetry. He made a career of his art talent when he graduated from the Ontario College of Art and became a high school art teacher first at A.N. Myer Secondary School in Niagara Falls, and later at Cameron Heights Collegiate in Kitchener, Ontario. Alex enjoyed doing editorial cartoons for local newspapers and writing verse in his leisure time.

Alex and Cathy raised their family in Kitchener where they lived for 34 years. After moving to Barrie, Alex put his musical talents to use by playing harmonica and piano at his day program at Grove Park. When he moved into the Bob Rumball Long Term Care Home this past summer, he continued to entertain his new friends with piano renditions of the old familiar songs they all enjoyed. Cheerful and optimistic, Alex ended his days on earth as he had lived them. Our family is grateful to have shared his long and happy life.

ALBERS, Paul Egon Albers Albers - Obituary | Print |

ALBERS, Paul Egon Albers -

Albers_PaulDecember 25, 1927 - February 22, 2015

It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of Paul Egon Albers on Sunday morning at Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, with his youngest son at his side.

Paul had an adventurous and entrepreneurial spirit. As a youth, he was a junior member of the Danish Youth Resistance during WWII. He then emigrated to Canada where he became a successful award-winning dairy farmer and a miner.

When he retired, he left behind his successful Albers Service Centre & Restaurant on Highway 11, but he never stopped dreaming about his much-loved cows and crops. Paul kept himself up-to-date on current affairs without missing a day.

Paul continued planning for his family and his future endeavours, ignoring his limitations. He was not afraid of his next adventure.
He was a spiritual man of immense faith for which he was greatly admired. Together with his wife, Paul served three missions in Canada for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Paul’s legacy will continue on through his sons and daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
