PUPEK, Stanley Edward - B.Arch.
22 February 1933 – 21 January 2013
After enduring several health challenges over the last number of years and most recently, a brief but courageous fight with complications from pneumonia, just shy of his 80th birthday, Stan passed with his sons by his side on January 21st at the RVH in Barrie, Ontario.
Stan will be lovingly remembered by his sons Darryl (Kathleen) of Fredericton, NB and Wayne (Julie) of Barrie, Ontario. He will also be greatly missed by his four grandchildren – Alex, Lucas, Cole and Torri, cousin Helen of Winnipeg, Sister-in-law Jennie (John) of Winnipeg, Brother-in-law Tony (Adeline) of Minneapolis, Minnesota as well as many other nieces, nephews and friends.
Stan was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Wanda, in 2010, his Mother Eva, Father Felix and in-laws Stephania and Rudolph.
Stan was born on February 22nd, 1933 to polish immigrant parents and was raised as an only child in the north-end of Winnipeg where hard work and translation were the order of the day. Stan attended St. John Technical High School and on the advice of his father completed his grade 12 year at the University of Manitoba as he strategically prepared for the transition to university life and beyond. Dad financed his way through university by working for an engineering consulting firm managing road surveys and sewer installations.
In 1956, he graduated from the School of Architecture at the University of Manitoba. Immediately upon graduation, he was hired by the Department of Public Works Canada. The bulk of his time was spent in Winnipeg as the Senior Executive Project Manager for the Western Region. Design/build projects throughout western and northern Canada included post offices, schools, prisons, laboratories, health centers, RCMP depots and First Nations projects.
Three key efforts that he was extremely proud of were the Winnipeg Taxation Data Center, the United Grain Grower’s Building and the Polish National Catholic Church of which he was a member. Stan completed his career in Ottawa, retiring with over 36 years of distinguished service as the Chief of Architectural Services. Stan made numerous contributions to his community coaching hockey and baseball, through church activities and various other boards of service.
He loved horseracing, playing horseshoes, a good game of hearts, Friday night curling, watching football – the Blue Bombers and Vikings were his teams – and wintering in Florida with Mom. He also enjoyed following his grandkids sporting and academic exploits. Most recently, Dad spent 2.5 years at the Mill Creek Care Center in Barrie where he was president of the Resident’s Council.
Darryl and Wayne would like to thank the RVH and Dr.’s Srour, Kutcher, Dibble, Anderson and Hemphill for their tremendous health care as well as numerous nurses and staff.
A full memorial service will take place in May in Winnipeg with details to follow.
Dad – you were the best, your breadth of knowledge was incredible. You were supportive and always keen to listen and offer advice. You have left a huge hole in our lives and we will be forever grateful for your support, wisdom and your mantra – always be the best that you can be. God bless your soul.
In Stan’s memory, contributions can be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
