ORD, John Dolwood Ord - Obituary | Print |

ORD, John Dolwood -

Ord_JohnOn November 27th 2012, peacefully in Elora, Ontario.

Dearly loved husband of June (Margaret Rosemary). Loved by sons Robin and his wife Denise, Clive and his wife Annie and Roger and his wife Kris. Loving grandfather to Scott, Ryan, Ali and Hayden.

John was brought up in a Victorian Islington household, his own Mum having died shortly after he was born. He went to High School in Bracebridge, Appleby College (briefly with his brother Dennis), Etobikoke and Brantford.

Showing no great promise at that stage, Jack (as he was known in his youth) became a bit of a larrikin and was sent off to Montreal to work for de Havilland in the early war years. John joined the RCAF in 1942 and flew Hurricanes and Spitfires, crashing twice. More importantly he met June while based at Rednell, England and that was the end of his wild days!

On demobbing and with her love and support, he used his flying skills to wing through Osgoode Hall and become a lawyer. He practiced mainly in Georgetown, where he became Queen’s Counsel in record time. John went on to become a Magistrate and then a Provincial Court Judge. He will be remembered as one of the more kind hearted Brampton Judges, however in close to 33 years on the bench, not one of his decisions was overturned on appeal. He was also sought out as a humane and effective labour arbitrator.

One of John’s great joys was May Island on Lake Rosseau, held by his family since the mid 1800s. His children spent all their childhood summers there with John and June in the time when the lake was pristine. But with children grown and the solitude John had so enjoyed being eroded with increasing numbers on the lake, he eventually sold up.

John and June spent their retirement years in Bracebridge and Elora, celebrating their loving union well past their diamond jubilee.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be announced in the future.
