DUNCAN, George Edward James Duncan - Obituary | Print |

DUNCAN, George Edward James -

We can only assume that God's many mansions needed repairs, so he came for our dad the carpenter to fix them on October 6, 2014.

George was a strong and generous man who loved his family with deep passion.

He could make us laugh without really knowing why, which made it all the more funny.

Left to miss him forever are his children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren.

Respecting George's wishes, there was no funeral and burial was private.

DUNCAN, Rev. John Bruce Duncan - Obituary | Print |

DUNCAN, Rev. John Bruce -

Duncan_John(August 10, 1926 - October 6, 2014) - Peacefully at the hospital in Lindsay, Ontario after a short illness.

Born in Normal, Illinois and raised in Bloomington, IL, John was the youngest of four brothers. Carter, Robert, Clark, and John Bruce were the sons of Eugene Duncan and Catherine Blackford.

After high school, John enlisted in the US military during World War II. He then attended Illinois Wesleyan University where he became a Sigma Chi brother, a significant lifelong connection for him. He graduated with a BSc in mathematics, and worked in the insurance business in Chicago, Omaha and Detroit.

He was recalled for active military duty during the Korean War. While volunteering as a youth leader at Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church in Detroit, he was called to the ordained ministry and moved to Toronto to study theology at Knox College at the University of Toronto. While there, John met and married Bona Mary Griffith, a nurse. He graduated with a BD (Bachelor of Divinity) in 1960.

John was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in Detroit, then took up parish ministry in Ishpeming where John and Bona's two daughters, Bona Elizabeth and Sarah Jane were born. In 1969, John took a post as chaplain at the state penitentiary in Marquette, Michigan where he found a calling for social work and restorative justice. 1975 saw a return to parish life as the family moved to Perth, Ontario where John was the minister at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Here John fulfilled a lifelong passion for horses and was finally able to buy his own horse and ride on a regular basis. His love of farm life, horses and riding never left him.

Three years later, John was called to make the transition to the national office of The Presbyterian Church in Canada where he held the post of Associate Secretary for Evangelism and Social Action. Some of his greatest joys and accomplishments had to do with challenging issues such as the death penalty, churches and corporate responsibility, and promoting ecumenism. John was one of the first organizers of a national ecumenical Christian Festival that promoted ecumenical fellowship, learning, worship and faith celebration.

John and Bona returned to parish life in Sarnia, Ontario. John’s passionate love and encyclopaedic knowledge of music drove his goal to install a Hal Goeber pipe organ in St. Giles' Presbyterian Church and encourage the love of good music in his worship services.

John retired from active ministry in 1992, but that never slowed him down. He and Bona bought an unfinished stone house in Norland, ON and proceeded to finish and tailor it to their collection of cherished antiques. Their retirement of 18 years was filled with their mutual love of music, worship, friends, family and of course, books.

John’s extensive collection of books on a wide range of topics filled his days with reading and sharing his gained knowledge with those who visited Woodstone House often. They were in a small village but never felt isolated from those they loved and who loved them. His last great wish was to return to his beloved Woodstone House and live out his days there.

John’s beloved wife, Bona, died five months ago. They were a partnership in life and ministry for almost 55 years. He was also predeceased by his brothers.

He is survived by his two daughters, Bona Elizabeth Peacock and Sarah Jane Duncan, and lovingly remembered by son-in-law Dan Peacock and grandchildren Griffith (18), Angus (15) and Georgia (9).

John spent his last months at Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay, Ontario. His family is thankful for the care he received there, knowing what a challenge that could be at times. The nursing staff and especially Dr. Michael Francis made his care a priority and eased the minds of his daughters who are also grateful for the care and support provided to him by the parishioners of Christ Church Coboconk, the neighbours in Norland and Shadow Lake, clergy colleagues, and the host of dear friends he had acquired from so many corners of his life.

Friends are invited to call at Christ Church Anglican, 12 Elizabeth Street, Coboconk, Ontario on Wednesday, October 15th from 12:30 pm until the time of the Funeral Service at 2 o'clock. Interment.

'There’s a great spirit gone.'

As expressions of sympathy, donations to Christ Church Anglican or Knox College would be appreciated by the family.
