WHEELER, Jack 'John' Wheeler - Obituary | Print |

WHEELER, Jack 'John' -

Passed away on Monday, November 3, 2014 in his 96th year.

Beloved husband of 70 years to Katherine (nee Bothwell). Loving father to Peter (Carol Ann), Paul, Wendy (Richard) Andrews and James (Jane).

Grandfather to Cynthia, Alexander, Robert, Megan and Jonathan and cherished great-grandpa to Oliver, Delilah and Everest. John owned and operated several manufacturing companies, mainly associated with the brick industry including Ontario Building Materials, Chem Brick, Cobo Minerals and Pan Brick, with facilities in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. His expertise in building materials was in demand throughout Europe, Russia and South America.

This allowed him to fulfill his love of travel. He was a deeply religious man whose deep bass voice was heard throughout the choir and congregation. Very few choir practices or Sunday services were missed. He was instrumental in the planning and construction of the church hall at St. Peter's Church in Mississauga. He was one of the founding fathers of St. George's College in Toronto and served as Chairman of the Board for several years.

John volunteered at and contributed to many charities and professional organizations including the Lions Club (served as President of the Runnymede Lions), various CNE committees, ASTM (American Society for Testing Materials including serving as President). He overcame his fear of flying by learning how to fly an airplane himself. Flying became such a passion that he qualified for a commercial pilot's license.

He espoused the adage that you are never too old to learn and attended university at 90 years of age! Your opinions, debates and love for life will be missed by your friends, compatriots (most of whom you outlived) and most of all, by your family.

John's family extends their heartfelt thanks to the caregivers from the CCAC and to the staff of St. Peter's Hospital.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at ST. JOHN'S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 272 Wilson Street East, Ancaster on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at 11:00 a.m.
