BOSHYK, Paul (Pavlo) Boshyk - Obituary | Print |

BOSHYK, Paul (Pavlo) -

1914 - 2013

Passed away peacefully in his 100th year at Trillium Hospital on Sunday, December 22, 2013 from natural causes.

Beloved husband of Maria (Kyforenko) of 67 years, loving father of Yury (Nadia) and Walter (Dianne).

Devoted Dido to Zara, Julia, Andrika, Laryssa, Paul and Peter. He will be greatly missed by family in Canada and Ukraine. He was born in 1914 (July 10) a few days before the outbreak of World War I in the village of Zubilno, near Lutsk, in the province of Volyn, at the time when this area was part of Imperial Russia, later Poland from 1918-1939 and today, Ukraine.

He studied horticulture and was active in the agricultural cooperative and in the Prosvita cultural association in his region, being particularly engaged in the church and other choirs. He was mobilized into the Polish cavalry and completed officer training. But with the German invasion in September, 1939 he became a prisoner-of-war first near Warsaw and then in the Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany in 1940.

He was then shipped off, this time to work on a farm in the village of Rudersdorf in Thuringia, Germany as a slave labourer. With the end of hostilities in May, 1945 he found himself in the Displaced Persons (DP) camp in Mainz-Kastel and, not wanting to return home under Stalinist Soviet rule, he remained there as a "stateless person". He married Maria there in 1946 and they remained under the protection of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) and the occupying U.S. 3rd Army until their immigration to Canada in June 1948. He was assigned to work for the Ministry of Labour for one year on a power plant construction site on the Ottawa River, and repay his passage as well. In 1949 he moved to Toronto with Maria and after several jobs he started his own grocery and realty businesses in partnership with Steve Stanko, until Paul's retirement in 1998.

He contributed to many community activities and to the vibrant commercial life of Bloor West Village in Toronto.

He was an active member of the St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Toronto and a contributor to the St. Volodymyr Cultural Centre in Oakville. Paul was very grateful for a long and fulfilling life, a loving family and dear friends.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Trillium Health Centre in Mississauga, CCAC, and Maria for their attentive care of Paul.

The funeral service will take place on Saturday, December 28, at 10 a.m. at the St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, 400 Bathurst Street and the interment will be at the St. Volodymyr Cemetery in Oakville at 1280 Dundas Street West and will be followed by a Memorial luncheon on the site of the Cultural Centre.

BRYANT, George Rennie Bryant - Obituary | Print |

BRYANT, George Rennie -

August 8, 1923 - December 22, 2013

Born in Kingston, Ontario, dearly loved by his wife Stella and his daughter Cindi Thompson (Noel).

Fondly remembered by stepsons Neville (Barbara) and Douglas Ward; Susan Bryant (Matthew), Scott Bryant (Michelle) and Gary Bryant (Carol), Kim Jolly and Debra Carey (Joe) and all their families, and Stella's sister Susan and her husband Lorrie, always there with love and support. George spent his working life at the Kingston Whig- Standard and the Toronto Star.

He loved being a newspaperman and travelled the world but was always happy to come home, especially to the house on the Credit in Norval where he walked his dogs, fed the raccoons and birds, rescued stray cats and dreamed up the annual Credit River rafting party. Those were the days.

In Peterborough, so many thanks to Dr. David Rutledge, Dr. Radu Butan, Lynda Chillibeck and Orma at the INR clinic; at Peterborough Regional Healthcare to Shirley and the nurses of MOP and to Jennifer and all the lab rats on the 5th floor.

We couldn't have managed without your care and compassion and more than a few laughs.

Private cremation has taken place.

George would be thrilled if those who wish to make a donation in his memory would do so to any animal cause or charity.

Flights of angels darling, flights of angels. -30-.
