TRAIN, Sylvia Train - Obituary | Print |

TRAIN, Sylvia -

At Wellesley Central Place, Toronto, Ontario, on December 12, 2013, Sylvia Train passed away peacefully after a long, full and eventful life.

Retired entertainment columnist for the Toronto Sun, former ballet teacher, Canada's first talent agent, theatre producer, PR person, restaurateur, "manners" teacher, and raconteur extraordinaire, Sylvia was known for her boundless energy, her fashion flair, her infectious laughter and her decadent chocolate chip cookies.

Sylvia is survived by her nieces Marcia Dorfman (Rick Kauffman) of Kingston, Ontario; Louise Dorfman (David Rubinstein) of Mono, Ontario; Beverly Hanson (Robert Hanson) of Bremerton, Washington; Mary-Ann Marcus of Tempe, Arizona (widow of her nephew, the late Dr. Mel Marcus); Molly Marcus of Bothell, Washington, (widow of her nephew, the late Henry Marcus); stepsons Garth Train of Pender Island, British Columbia and Cliff Train of Mono, Ontario; step-daughter Joan Ford of Toronto; granddaughter Lesley Train of Sidney, British Columbia; great- nephew Daniel Rubinstein (Adrienne Fournier) of Ottawa; and Rona Flaherty of Naples, Florida, who adopted Sylvia in recent years as her "mom". Sylvia was predeceased by her sisters Dorothy Dorfman of Winnipeg and Lucille Fitch of Seattle and by her step- son, Brian Train of Toronto.

She will be much missed by Katie and Matthew Flynn of Toronto and Megan Flynn of Montreal, their mother Mary Liz Flynn of Toronto, and by the legions of friends she made during her lifetime.

Sylvia was adored by them all and by the wonderful staff at Wellesley Central Place, where she spent the last 9 1/2 years and especially by her attentive and loving personal caregivers, Aileen Tagapolot and before her, Vencyl Soria. We are grateful to them and to all the medical staff and support workers who attended to her at WCP. Some have cared for her lovingly since the beginning of her stay - Melissa, Wei, Jennifer, Erin, Erica and Zufan and many others over the years - too many to mention. No doubt her longevity was in part due to their care. The family also thanks Jack MacKeen and the staff at WCP behind the scenes.

Though Alzheimer's robbed Sylvia of much of her physical strength and mental acuity, her sense of humour and general good cheer were with her till the end, teaching us that the essential spirit of a person endures no matter what the circumstances.

According to her wishes, Sylvia will be cremated, and a celebration of her life will be planned for next spring.

Donations, if you wish, to Performing Arts Lodges, Toronto; the Alzheimer Society of Canada; or charity of your choice.

CHAPPLE, Francis Chapple, Obituary | Print |

CHAPPLE, Francis -

Chapple_FrancisFrank passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 11 at Saint Joseph’s Villa in Dundas with his daughter Kathleen Maude close by.

He was predeceased earlier this year by Irene (née Bishop), his wife of almost 76 years.

Born in what was then Fort William, he graduated from the local collegiate in 1937. He worked as a salesman of ladies’ ready-to-wear in Western Canada until becoming merchandise manager of his father’s department store in Fort William.

Frank and Irene moved to Hamilton in 1950, where he worked for G.W. Robinson’s before founding his own dry goods store in Burlington in 1955. After moving to Burlington a year later, he went on to establish another store in Burlington and one in Bronte. When he retired, he contributed with his considerable energy to Alcoholics Anonymous and to classes on aging at McMaster University as tutorial leader.

What marked Frank was his sense of humour, always evident in a ready smile and a twinkle in his eye. Well-spoken, polite, and kindly, he could put people at ease socially. Everyone will remember his favourite sayings: “Support your local businessman,” or “easy does it.” He loved gadgets and working with his hands--his workbench was something to behold. Frank was also very fond of children and animals.

His loving family and friends will sorely miss him and his teasing, laugh-provoking claim that he “never felt better.”

Frank is survived by his children Jerry (Nina), Judy, Harvey (Chris), Elizabeth (John), and Kathleen; his grandchildren Alex, Sarah (Jeffrey), Kelly (Jay), and Erin (Hieg), and his great-grandchildren Zara, Theoren, Harry, and Noel.

Cremation has taken place. A service of remembrance will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2014, from 2 to 5 p.m., in the chapel of Saint Joseph’s Villa, 56 Governor’s Road, Dundas.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to his daughter Judy’s group home, Community Living Grimsby, Lincoln and West Lincoln, Box 220, Beamsville, LOR 1BO, would be appreciated.
