CONWAY, Dermot Conway - Obituary | Print |

CONWAY, Dermot -

On Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at Lakeridge Health Oshawa. Dad/Poppa/Dermot or Derm, as he was known to many, has gone skiing. At age 97, Dad has pushed on to explore new slopes.

Born and raised in Quebec City, the Plains of Abraham were his playground. Always an avid skier, he competed in all disciplines and taught professionally for the Château Frontenac. In Dad’s words, he has “always been thankful for his transfer to Oshawa where he made friends and married Helen."

Dad loved to sing and no campfire or road trip was complete without rousing renditions of Big Band and other favourites. He and Mom enjoyed life at the cottage, bridge, and dancing. Dad served his community in a variety of volunteer capacities, as well as helping to establish the Oshawa Ski Club at Kirby, where he schussed the hills well into his 88th year.

Dermot was blessed with two loving wives: Helen Heffer was his cherished wife of 53 years. With Gloria Taylor, Dad found joy for over nine years until her passing in 2011. He met Gloria across the bridge table at The Court at Pringle Creek, his home for more than 12 years. Dad also mourned the loss of his eldest daughter, Mary Frances, and his sisters Joan, Adrianne and Eileen.

Dad will be missed by many who loved him dearly, including children Joanne Greenway, Michael (Carol), Andrea, and Theresa (Bob), brother Tony (Carmen), grandchildren Kathleen (Brian and children), Dann (Erica), Brian (Anik and children), Chris (Jen), Erin (Geoff), Brendan, Kevin, Chris, and Greg, son-in-law Paddy Smith, and stepchildren Paul (Gale and family) and Peter. Numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and in-laws have expressed their love and affection.

Special gratitude to many who offered Dad support and good humour during his years at Pringle Creek. Appreciation also to staff, friends and bridge partners at Pringle and the caring staff on the Palliative Care Unit at Lakeridge Health.

Arrangements out of Peterborough. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, 194 Simcoe St. N., Oshawa on Monday, April 7th at 11:00 a.m. Visitation from one hour prior. Reception to follow.
