O'CONNELL, Deirdre -

1917 - 2014

Deirdre O'Connell passed away in Toronto on December 12, 2014 after several years of declining health.

With a fierce Irish ancestry and a proudly Catholic faith, Deirdre was a generous and kind person who always had a smile and a chuckle and lived by the motto "Old age isn't for sissies!" Deirdre was born in Ottawa to Agnes Smith and Richard O'Connell. She is predeceased by her brothers Donal and Howard. Deirdre referred to herself as a "word smith" and her early career as a journalist was spent working as a reporter for the Ottawa Journal and the Kingston- Whig Standard, long defunct.

She also worked in Public Relations for various companies, including DuPont, the King Edward and Sheraton Hotels, Eaton's and Kay Kamen International Ltd. She had many women writer friends and belonged to the Canadian Women's Press Club, the liveliest press club in the country. Deirdre made a foray into the world of gourmet cookery when she partnered with her friend, cook book author and fellow journalist, Helene Gougeon in a shop called Belle Cuisine in Montreal in 1972, one of the first shops to provide all the gadgetry for gourmet cooks.

Deirdre moved to Toronto in 1985 and moved into PAL Place, a retirement home for actors and those associated with the arts. She spent most of her life studying and learning philosophy, drawing, painting and sculpture. She was a devoted patron of the opera and ballet, which she attended until late in her life. Even though she was on limited income, Deirdre gave generously to many charities.

Many of Deirdre's friends have predeceased her but she is fondly remember by her godson Dr. Michael Schull, his sister Christiane and brother Joe. Deirdre was cremated, as was her wish.
