MANUEL, Douglas Frederick Manuel - Obituary | Print |

MANUEL, Douglas Frederick -

Manuel_DouglasPeacefully at Lakeridge Health Oshawa on Saturday, July 26, with his wife Sandy by his side.

Doug was born in Oshawa April 17, 1944 to Bill and Edith Manuel. He was preceded in death by his brother Bob and is survived by sisters Sheila Tomlinson and Phyllis Manuel, brother-in-law Gil Boyce, and sisters-in-law Gail Boyce, Joan Boyce and Susan Barnabe.

Doug was a quadriplegic since August 10, 1966 when he was in a single car accident. After three months in hospital and twenty-one months of hard work at the Lyndhurst Rehabilitation Centre in Toronto, he regained partial use of his right arm. Technically he was unemployable. In reality by 1974 he had become so active in working on transportation, housing, financial fairness and accessibility for the disabled that he was awarded the Vanier Award, recognizing him as one of Canada's "Five Outstanding Young Canadians". His then tribute stated "Doug is a living monument to human perseverance and courage and stands as an example to all Canadians".

Undoubtedly his most significant involvement was having a major role in the creation of Handi Transit and serving as General Manager from 1979 until his retirement in 1994.

Doug was very pleased and proud to serve on the Board of Governors for Durham College and ultimately serving as chair in 1995/96.

Sincere thanks to St. Elizabeth’s and Personal Attendant Care for the excellent PSW and nursing care that Doug received over the last many years and to Dr Mary Koziar for her outstanding care for over 30 years. Never will her bicycle visits to our home to see Doug when he was unable to visit her office be forgotten. Thanks also to the doctors and nurses and other staff on C Wing 7 at Lakeridge Health Oshawa for their kindness and care over many hospital visits and especially the final one.

A gathering to celebrate Doug's life will be held on Wednesday, August 27, 7:00-9:00 PM in the reception hall at McINTOSH-ANDERSON-KELLAM FUNERAL HOME, 152 King St. E., Oshawa (905-433-5558). Bring your stories about Doug to share with others. Beginning at 8:00 PM, there will be an opportunity for those who wish to share their reminiscences with the gathering. Dress code in effect - comfort and colour.

If you wish to make an honorary donation in Doug’s name please consider Durham College "in support of students with special needs". This may be done at the funeral home or on line at http://www.durhamcollege.ca/office-of-development/giving-to-dc/honorary-donations

PYE, A. John Pye - Obituary | Print |

PYE, A. John -   "Express Condolences"

Pye_JohnNovember 9, 1935 - July 26, 2014

Peacefully at home after a brief illness, surrounded by his family on Saturday, July 26th, 2014 at a very young 78 years of age.

He will be forever missed by his wife Marion with whom he shared over 56 years of marriage. Dear father of Susan (Tom) Rivers, Wayne (Alison Le Ber), Gail (Wayne) Kean, David (Annie), Joyce Johnston and Diana (Mike Pabstel). He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Dear brother of Winnifred Rajsic, Frank (Joyce) and Marshall. Predeceased by his parents, Hayward and Frances and his great-grandson Dylan.

John was born at home in Mount Moriah, Newfoundland on November 9, 1935, and remained a Newfoundlander through and through despite moving to Ontario in his early 20's. He had a ready smile and was willing to tell a yarn to anyone he saw. He was continually drawn back to Newfoundland both by visits and a period of living there before settling in Oshawa in his later years.

Living in Oshawa allowed John and his wife Marion to be near their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. It also afforded them the opportunity to participate in a variety of social activities and make many friends. Family gatherings were hosted at their home before the family expanded to the point that a larger space was required. He was always ready for visitors and company, both family and friends. Each of his many grandchildren were inspired by his unique ability to connect to them in conversation, show interest in their individual lives as well as his continued physical activities.

John stayed true to his roots with the food he ate, the music he loved, the friendly conversation, and the jokes he told. He loved listening to a variety of music, dancing and playing on his beloved accordion.

John sought a healthy lifestyle throughout his life; with both in what he ate and the physical activity he enjoyed. He often sought a holistic remedy for any ailment. He rode a bike, skated, and had a garden his entire life, along with a period of raising a variety of animals. In his senior years, he expanded his interests with golfing and dancing. John always walked the golf course in order to maximize the opportunity for exercise. He skated numerous times a week and many were in awe of his agility and speed on the rink. He was proud of his accomplishment of climbing the stairs of the CN tower at 63 years of age in 22 minutes. John and Marion were members of a number of Senior Dance Groups as well as the Legion. He was a force to be reckoned with on the dance floor and was a very popular partner.

John will be sadly missed by many and forever remembered for his inspiring active lifestyle, his quick wit, friendly smile, chatty disposition and countless stories and anecdotes.

A very special thanks to Dr. Katrina Cox, N.D. (Naturopathic Doctor) who gave him comfort.

Visitation will be held at OSHAWA FUNERAL HOME, 847 King Street West (905-721-1234) on Tuesday, July 29th from 5 – 8 p.m. and Wednesday, July 30th from 2:00 p.m. until the Celebration of Life to be held in the Chapel at 3:00 p.m

Memorial donations to SickKids Foundation, Canadian Mental Health Association – Durham Branch or CHARITY of Choice would be appreciated.
