Skelton_DougBorn May 3, 1933, beloved husband of Mary Joan (Linton), passed away at Collingwood General and Marine Hospital on March 16, 2014, of cancer.

He was the cherished father of David Skelton (Colleen Segriff) of Whitehorse, Yukon, Chris Skelton (Martha Whitton) of Clearview Township and Lisa Skelton (Peter Dyck) of Elmvale. Dear and devoted Poppa to Sadie Segriff, Patrick, Jonathan and Hannah Skelton, and Hall and Abram Skelton-Dyck.

After working in the road construction and paving industry he founded Skelton Brumwell and Associates, Consulting Engineers, in Barrie. He was greatly appreciated and respected by his partners, peers and his clients to whom he embodied professionalism, integrity and friendship. To his staff he was an inspiring leader and patient and generous mentor.

Doug approached life with a positive and optimistic outlook and built relationships easily with his warmth and earnestness. His great strength and resolve got him through the challenges of life including his past year of illness. He was a highly skilled and creative person of diverse enthusiasms – tennis and water skiing at his parents cottage on Thorah beach; skiing at Devil’s Glen where he will be greatly missed by his ski buddies; riding and showing his spoiled horses; sailing on Kempenfelt Bay; camping in the trailer around the province and country; and at the cherished farm in Nottawasaga Township, renovating the house, building fences, mowing grass, barbequeing and entertaining family and friends.

After retiring, Doug immersed himself in the practise of Tai Chi and his fellow enthusiasts will miss his helpful participation. He was a dragonboater, first as a paddler and then as the steersman. After moving to Collingwood he could often be seen riding his bike around the trails or, when the weather was miserable, on the exercise bike at the Collingwood. He always wanted to be in fine form for skiing, and he always was.

He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and community.

A Memorial Service will take place Friday, March 21st at 1:00 p.m. at the Trinity United Church 140 Maple Street, Collingwood, ON.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital and the Canadian Mental Health Association would be appreciated by the family.
