HUGHES, Sirley June (nee HOURD) -

Passed away surrounded by the love of her family on Tuesday, December 23, 2014 in her 85th year.

'Shirl' was a loving and devoted wife to Jim for 65 years, adored mother of Pat (Heather), Jan (Mark) and Jeff (Janet).

She was a cherished and fun Nana to Matt, Carly (Arthur), Katie, Kelly and Kristi. Shirl was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1929. Following their marriage Jim and Shirl moved frequently before settling in Toronto to raise their family. Her greatest joys were times spent with family and friends, bridge games and lunch with girlfriends of 50-plus years, travelling, a fine Brunello, a rowdy game of poker and the love of many pets, most recently her faithful companion TJ.

Shirl was a beautiful combination of gentle and strong -- never more so demonstrated than in the last few years, as she lovingly cared for Jim, while braving her own health issues.

Our mother and Nana was the heart and soul of our family and a wonderful friend to many. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

We would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses of CCAC -- Marc, Diane and Christine -- who were a great support to the family while keeping Shirl at home during her final weeks. Cremation has taken place, as per her request.

A Celebration of her Life will take place on Saturday, January 24th from 2-5 p.m. at the Weston Golf and Country Club, 50 St. Phillips Road, Etobicoke.
