BUSHELL, Elizabeth Ann (Betty Ann) Bushell - Obituary | Print |

BUSHELL, Elizabeth Ann (Betty Ann) B.A., B.Ed. O.N. -

Suddenly but surrounded by love on February 5, 2015 following an incredibly aggressive cancer at age 72.

Grateful to have been born to Carson and Audrey Bushell (deceased), who believed in education and independence for women, Betty Ann enjoyed a career that offered her many opportunities for exponential growth. She is survived by her son, Marshall (Marty), his wife, Edita (Edie) Cimba-Bushell, their three wonderful boys, Ryan, Connor and Nolan and her brother, J. Fraser and his family. Betty Ann was a brilliant woman who attended the University of Western Ontario at 16 and began teaching grade 13 at the age of 20 on completion of teacher's college.

While dedicating her professional life to educating youth, she also became a formidable advocate for women's rights, labour and social justice movements, often the driving force behind many successful political and union campaigns. Her work within labour movements, both at the forefront and behind the scenes, was always lauded. Her passion for volunteerism was recognized through receipt of a YWCA "Women of Distinction" award and the "Order of Niagara".

Her volunteer efforts were countless, whether as a church councillor, executive member of the Workers Arts and Heritage Centre, treasurer of the Congress of Union Retirees of Canada, or foster mother to many dogs for the local SPCA. Always a globetrotter who travelled off the beaten path, from Azerbaijan to Armenia and Vietnam to Cambodia, she regretted having to leave this world prior to travelling with her 2 younger grandsons, after having enjoyed numerous adventures with her grandson Ryan, including the Galápagos Islands, Banff and the Yukon.

Visitation will be held at Church of the Resurrection (435 Mohawk Rd. W., Hamilton) on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 from 1-3 p.m. followed by 3 p.m. service and reception immediately thereafter.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Church of the Resurrection or the Hamilton SPCA are appreciated.

HAYES, Anna Eleanor -

1928 - 2015

Anna Eleanor Hayes (nee Park) passed away on Thursday, February 5, 2015 due to complications after a fall and hip replacement surgery.

Her wry sense of humour kept her doctors, nurses, caregivers and those of us who knew her best on our toes right to the end. Ellie was born in July 1928 to Jim and Violet Park (nee Praskey) and raised in Toronto. In April 1955, she married Harold W. Hayes, the love of her life. Ellie is survived by Harold; their sons Jeffrey Hayes (Carine), Brad Hayes (Gwen) and grandchildren Dahlia and Carden.

Ellie cherished her extended family, neighbours on Beaufield, relationships with former colleagues and her many friendships with fellow golfers including her "second family" (Gunson) and friends in New Zealand, where she and Harold spent their winters for over 20 years. Ellie completed her Teaching Certificate at University of Toronto, OISE and her Masters in Education through York University Atkinson College.

She taught for many years at Bruce Public School and in the 70s and 80s, made significant impacts in the lives of new Canadians as an ESL Teacher for adults at Jones Avenue Public School.

A steady stream of new friends from around the world enriched the lives of the entire family. Ellie took great delight in supporting the progress of her students and her loved ones through the various stages of their lives.

She was always an encourager, purposeful in her support and steadfast in her preference for working behind the scenes in order to let others take centre stage and shine.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Ellie's memory for the Parkinson Society Canada or Toronto East General Hospital would be appreciated. There will be a celebration of Ellie's life in the spring.
