PEHAR, Vinko Pehar - Obituary | Print |

PEHAR, Vinko -

June 6, 1925 - October 25, 2014

Owner of Vinko Motors Limited, 890 - 2 Dundas Street West, Toronto, for over 50 years Vinko was born in Mostar, Yugoslavia, the son of Anna and Andrea Pehar.

He had two sisters, Stanislava and Josephine, now deceased. He leaves behind his wife Joan, three children, John, Andrea and Stephen and John's children, John Jr., Emily and Matthew. Vinko was schooled in Austria, survived WWII, then spent 1950 with his sisters in Rome serving as an interpreter in the Vatican as he was gifted with the ability to speak several languages. When all foreigners were ordered out of Italy, Vinko immigrated to Canada in January of 1951, finding himself alone in Halifax.

He purchased a car and drove across Canada to the west coast, then returned to Ontario where he settled in Shelburne and found work as a welder at Liberty Iron Company. Vinko later came to Toronto and got work washing and detailing cars while waiting for an opportunity to better himself.

With many immigrants coming to work in Toronto's growing construction industry, he realized they needed transportation and would soon be driving their own cars. Thus, the entrepreneur Vinko embarked on a career in the car business, founding Imperial Driving School and later Vinko Motors. In 1952, he was admitted to the ENT department at Toronto General Hospital with tonsillar abscesses.

There he met his nurse Joan Bovair, whom he courted after his discharge; she became his wife on September 11, 1954. With a growing family needing more space, they moved to a new home in Thornhill in 1968. Vinko was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in October of 2010. Unable to drive, he used the public transportation system. However, when that was no longer possible, he moved to his beloved car lot in August of 2012 where he was attended to by family, friends and long-standing neighbours who welcomed him to stop by and visit their shops and restaurants.

In June of 2014, it became necessary for him to be cared for in a long-term facility and he became a resident of Leisureworld in Richmond Hill, where he and Joan celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

In mid-October, he was transferred to Mackenzie Health where he was lovingly looked after by the nurses and attendants.

It was Vinko's wish to have a simple, private burial. The graveside service was officiated by the Rev. Douglas Whidden.

To honour Vinko's memory, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer Society or Mackenzie Health, 10 Trench Street, Richmond Hill, ON.
