McKEOWN, Samuel Spencer McKeown - Obituary | Print |

McKEOWN, Samuel Spencer -

Peacefully retired from this life, on Friday, February 7, 2014, at The Briton House in Toronto, just weeks before his 107th birthday.

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Sam was predeceased by his beloved wife, Evelyn Ruth McKeown. Sadly missed by his best friend, Glenn Davies, wife Anne Hanson, and "adopted grandchildren" Lauren, Sarah and Meghan Davies.

Lovingly remembered by friends Margaret Morse, and Charlotte Stevenson, and by all the many people whose lives he touched while living on Hurndale Avenue and later at The Briton House.

A former professional musician, Sam was an extraordinary man, gifted with good genes, a razor sharp mind, quick wit and love of a good Manhattan. In his mid-90s, he took himself to Hawaii for vacation.

At 97, while balanced on a plank of wood, he used a homemade extension device to paint his porch ceiling.

At 98, he packed up his home of 60 years and arranged to move to a retirement house.

Always ready with a joke, Sam's advice for living a long life was straightforward: "You have to be a bit silly every once in awhile". Untethered from this world, we like to think he's happy, telling a few jokes, and playing with that big orchestra in the sky.

Please consider a donation in Sam's name to the charity of your choice.

Sam will be laid to rest with his wife in Georgetown on Thursday, February 20, 2014.

When I am gone, release me. Let me go.
I have so many things to see and do.

You mustn't tie yourself to me with tears.
Be happy that we had so many beautiful years.

I gave to you my love. You can only guess how much you gave to me in happiness.
I thank you for the love you each have shown, but now it's time I traveled on alone.

So grieve a while for me, if grieve you must.
Then let your grief be comforted by trust.

It's only for a while that we must part, so bless the memories within your heart.
I won't be far away, for life goes on.

So if you need me, call and I will come.
Though you can't see or touch me, I'll be near.

And if you listen with your heart, you'll hear all my love around you soft and clear.
And then, when you must come this way alone,
I'll greet you with a smile and say welcome home...

Passed away peacefully on February 7, 2014, age 85.

Loving mother of son Shawn Richardson, daughter Monica McCorquodale, son-in-law David McCorquodale.

Will be missed by family and friends. We knew little that morning God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same.

It broke our hearts to lose you. You did not go alone. For part of us went with you the day God called you home.

You left us beautiful memories, your love is still our guide and although we cannot see you, you are always by our side.

Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.

Donations would be kindly appreciated to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

WALLACE, Denis Frank Wallace, Obituary | Print |

WALLACE, Denis Frank -

Wallace_DenisMay 12, 1919 – February 7, 2014

Our beloved Denis, Dad, Poppa, Gramps, passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 7th in Burlington, Ontario. His loving wife, Joan (Garth) was at his side, as well as his grandson Curtis.

He was predeceased by his first wife Beatrice (Betty) and his brothers Donald and Victor.

He is survived by brother Jim (Lynham), sisters Pat Westwood and Heather (and husband Gibb) Ehalt , and children Pat (Young), Denyse (and husband Jeff Kass) and Brian. He was a devoted Grampa to Aaron, David (and Clare), Stephen (and wife Tricia) and Curtis, and Great-Grampa to Tony and Hunter Denis.

He also leaves behind a loving step-family: Karen Garth and her children Emily and Joey; Sharon Aydinli, who nursed him through his last months and her husband Senol, and their children Jim, Lindsay and Rachel who knew him as her devoted Papa; as well as former daughter-in-law, Linda (Wallace) Boos and former son-in-law, Alistair (Young).

Denis was a veteran of WWII serving overseas.

He spent his earlier working years in Stratford, where his daughters went to school, and where his son, Brian, was born. An interest in food and club services lead to a move to Ancaster and the Hamilton Golf and Country Club, where he became Club House Manager, and worked for 21 years. He had fond memories of the staff and members he came to know there. He also made many friends among the membership, and was awarded a lifetime golf membership for his sterling service.

After his retirement at 65, he decided to embark on a new career, and went to work for Leggat Pontiac Buick Cadillac as a salesman. While in that position, he met his wife, Joan. He also came to know the Leggat family, and appreciate the continued friendship shown to him by all.

Denis greatly appreciated the support and friendship shown by family members during his illness, as well as that of neighbours and friends. All will remember Denis’ keen wit and sense of humour, both in evidence to the end.

A Celebration of Life and Memorial will be held at The Hamilton Golf & Country Club at a date to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The Salvation Army or Carpenter Hospice, where Denis and his family were gently cared for during his final hours.
