ALBRECHT, Rev. Earl Albrecht - Obituary | Print |

ALBRECHT, Rev. Earl -

July 11, 1935 - July 7, 2014

Following a courageous battle with multiple sclerosis.

Earl attended the Ontario College of Art, University of Western Ontario and Waterloo Lutheran (now Wilfrid Laurier) University. He became a minister with the Lutheran Church (ELCIC) and served in Chesley, ON, Fredericton, NB and Toronto. Earl continued his passion for art doing "art sermons" with a rock band in Pennsylvania in the 60s and becoming the set and costume designer for the Gilbert and Sullivan Society in Fredericton in the 70s.

In Toronto in the 80s, Earl became an advocate for social justice. He helped to run a food bank, the "Peanut Pantry," serving people in need in the Don Mills/ Sheppard area. Earl served on committees that built local services including the Oriole Community Centre, Emmanuel Manor Seniors Residence and Eva's Initiatives (shelters and services for homeless youth). He was a member of the Minister's Advisory Committee on Corrections (Ontario Ministry of Corrections). Earl was a member of the religious advisory committee at CFTO TV.

Through the 80s he worked on filming inspirational programs with CFTO and travelled to Israel, Turkey, Rome and Greece. He was involved in helping to organize multi-faith and interdenominational events in Toronto. Earl was a proud member of the Christian-Jewish Dialogue of Toronto and loved working to foster respect and understanding between diverse religious groups. Earl continued to do the work he loved until he became confined to a wheelchair. He then retired to Elmwood, Ontario, where he volunteered with the Hanover Public Library.

As his condition deteriorated, Earl moved back to Toronto and into long term care at Leisureworld-Ellesmere. During his first years there, Earl was an active volunteer as well as resident, doing everything from running worship services and providing chaplaincy to calling Bingo and sitting on the resident's council and food committee. Earl slowly had to give these up, but continued writing on his computer.

Earl was a loving father and husband and is survived by his wife Sandra (Musselman), children Elizabeth Albrecht-Bisset and Stephen Albrecht, grandchildren Magdalena and Robert Bisset of Toronto and sister and brother- in-law Shirley (Albrecht) and Earl Schaeffer of Kitchener.

A celebration of Earl's life will be held at Advent Lutheran Church, 2800 Don Mills Road at 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 9th.
