MALTZAHN, Lenore  -  Was born on October 13, 1942, the only daughter of Helen Bavis, of Cross Creek, New Brunswick and Albert Malzan, of Alberta.

She never knew her father, who died in a training mission for the RCAF during World War II.

She had one brother, Jerry, who predeceased her, without issue. Lenore grew up behind a grocery store owned by her mother, on Eglinton Avenue East.

She had a very happy childhood and spoke of it frequently. After graduating from North Toronto High School, she enrolled at the University of Toronto, where she advanced to the Ph.D. level in the Faculty of Italian and Hispanic Studies.

She taught English for two years in Colombia and then returned to Toronto to teach Spanish at York University.

There she met and married Hollis Rinehart and together they had a daughter, Hildreth Helena Hathaway, named in part for her two grandmothers.

As a family they travelled together to South America and Florida and spent summers in Vermont, where she died of an unexpected, and untimely, stroke, on September 20, 2018.

Lenore was lively, energetic, generous and friendly. She was also an avid croquet player and a creative and accomplished cook and seamstress, having made many beautiful quilts.

She was masterful in the art of bringing people together through her thoughtful dinner and garden parties. Lenore was a deeply devoted friend, as well as a champion of animals, the vulnerable and neglected. She was a most special mother who worked tirelessly and would do anything in her power for her child.

She took up the role of grandmother to Hildreth's two foster sons as if they were her own.

She has left a legacy of courage, creativity, kindness and tenacity - one which her daughter is proud to carry on.

She will be sorely missed, but not forgotten, by all who knew her.
