Maag HenryMAAG, Heinrich 'Henry' Friedrich Wilhelm - Jan 12, 1936 – Feb 10, 2019 -

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Henry on Sunday, February 10, 2019, peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, after recently having celebrated his 83rd birthday.

He was a cherished husband to Heather (nee Owen).

Devoted father to Karla (Christopher Lloyd) and loving Opa to Henry Lloyd, James Lloyd and Amber Degenaar.

Henry was born in 1936 to Alma and Wilhelm Maag in Potsdam Germany. His early years were spent in his parents’ hotel, Waldfrieden, in Klein-Glienicke.

At the age of 15, he was sent to West Berlin, both to apprentice as a chef, and to escape the trials of Soviet occupation. Not able to return home to occupied East Germany, he found work in Sweden, Baden-Baden and Heidelberg.

Immigrating to Canada in 1957 at the age of 21, he found work in a uranium mine in Elliot Lake, after a brief stint in the kitchen of the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal where he had landed.

His culinary career took him to the kitchens of multiple hotels and resorts in Ontario including the Lord Simcoe in Toronto, The Summit Golf Club in Richmond Hill, The Donalda Club, Muskoka Sands Inn in Gravenhurst and head chef at the Toronto International Airport to name a few.

Henry loved his work, but also found great pleasure in so many other things; He was a passionate sailor, spending special moments with Heather on Georgian Bay.

The family would like to thank Dr. S. Reingold for his years of care and conversation, Dr. E. Gucciardi for her kindness in Henry’s last year, the staff at ambulatory care at Headwaters Hospital and the Bayshore nurses whose dedication helped to keep Henry comfortable at home.

In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, the family would appreciate financial donations to Headwaters Health Care Foundation, or blood donation to Canadian Blood Services.

Henry was a fan of a good party! Please join us for a celebration of his life on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at Rotary Place in Bolton from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. Bring your funny stories and happy memories to share.
