NEUWELT, Anne Elizabeth  -  Victoria, BC We are very sad to announce the death of Anne Elizabeth Neuwelt, MSW, PhD (University of Toronto) on January 16, 2021, supported by medical assistance in dying.

Anne was born in Lodz, Poland on June 2, 1933 to Maria (née Landau) and Alfred Neuwelt.

She was predeceased by her sister Eva Kenyon (Walter) and brother Michael Neuwelt (Donna).

Anne was a social worker, university professor, social activist, and friend who helped others develop the best within themselves as individuals, citizens, and members of society.

Anne will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched. Anne is survived by her grieving husband, Stephen Jackson, her partner of over 43 years; her loving nieces and nephew, Diane Kenyon, Christine Kenyon, Barbara Neuwelt, Patricia Neuwelt, Paul Neuwelt, and Andrea Murphy; and Stephen's three children, Birgit Jackson, Kirsty Jackson, and Anne Marie Predko.

She was predeceased by her nephew Peter Neuwelt.

As a young child, Anne and her family escaped Poland during World War II using transit visas issued in 1940 by Chiune Sugihara, Japanese vice-consul in Kaunus, Lithuania which allowed them to reach Japan and eventually Canada.

In defiance of his government, Sugihara saved over 6,000 Jews fleeing Nazi-occupied Europe.

Anne's expressed wish was that friends and family never forget this man, his moral courage, and his heroic actions.

A private funeral has taken place.

In memory of Anne, donations to the charity of your choice to support the hungry, the dispossessed and those oppressed around the world would be appreciated.
