ANGLIN, Douglas George - Peacefully died in the Veterans Centre at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto, Canada, on Saturday June 19, 2021, at the age of 97.
Doug was predeceased by his adored wife and best friend Mary Elizabeth Anglin (Watson).
He will be forever remembered and greatly missed by his daughters Margaret and Deirdre (Tom), his grandchildren Rodney (Valeria), Emily (Jonathan), Alexander (Kelsey), Sarah and Trevor (Cristina), and his great-grandchildren Mercedes, Madison and Tyson.
Doug’s memory is also treasured by his brother Bob, sister-in-law Helen and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by sisters Marion and Mildred, sister-in-law Margaret and brothers-in-law Bill and Orville.
Doug’s early experience as a naval officer in World War II kindled his interest in politics. Following his doctorate at Oxford University he had a distinguished career as a professor of political science at Carleton University.
Doug served as the first Vice-Chancellor of the University of Zambia from 1965 to 1969. He maintained close ties with Zambian friends and colleagues throughout his lifetime. After retirement, he dedicated himself to voter education and election monitoring, including the first democratic election in South Africa.
Doug will be remembered for his wisdom, his humility, his generosity, and his personal interest in everyone he met. His deep abiding faith underpinned a life dedicated to human rights, racial justice, and equal educational opportunities for all.
In his later years he deeply appreciated the compassionate care provided by all the staff of the Veterans Centre. The family also wishes to thank the dedicated team of private caregivers who greatly enhanced Doug’s quality of life. Special thanks to Dr. Susan Deering and to Chaplain Wes Roberts for their care.

Out of respect for the Zambian national days of mourning following the recent death of Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, a celebration of Doug’s life will be held at a later date.
