GUBINS, Indra Magdalena (nee Bencons)  - During the first snowflakes of the year and below the stars of midnight, Indra died of sudden cardiac arrest on Tuesday, December 12, 2017.

Born in Livberze, Latvia in 1927, she enjoyed celebrating her 90th birthday this past summer with family and friends. Due to WWII, she had fled her homeland, spending time in Germany and the UK before ending up in Canada together with her husband Gunars Gubins (1925-1987).

Indra was the first in her family to achieve an undergraduate degree in Art History and later went on to receive a Masters in Library Science.

A renowned Latvian Writer, Poet and Art Critic, she penned 27 novels and was a librarian for the Art Gallery of Toronto and the Art History department of the University of Toronto.

She leaves behind her cherished sister, Biruta Skujins; her son, Arnis Gubins; his wife Inese Grava-Gubins; and beloved granddaughter, Brigita.

She also leaves her daughter Nora Gubins, and her husband Stephen Sweeting. There are many other relatives in Canada and abroad who will dearly miss Indra. Please contact Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., for funeral details.

Donations to the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Latvian Church of Toronto are welcomed
