TANNIS, Guntis Ilmars - February 11, 1931 - January 22, 2018
Guntis peacefully passed away on Jannuary 22, 2018 at the age of 86 surrounded by his loving wife Natalija and family members at MacKenzie Hospital.
Born in Matisi, Rusas, Latvia on February 11, 1931. Beloved husband to Natalija for 61 years, lovingly remembered by sons Guntars (Elina), Elmars, daughter Lilita (Peter), grandchildren Pavils, Karlis, Tila, Marek, Peter, Robijs, Deins, Natalija and his brother Janis (Silvija). Tannis family fled Latvia in 1944 ahead of Russian occupying forces and spent several years in various German refugees camps. In 1947 he immigrated to England and then in 1951 to Canada.
Guntis became a flying officer in the Canadian Air Force then had a successful career with Air Canada for 33 years, where he was known as Captain Gunnar Tannis.
Guntis was a dedicated, positive thinker with Utopian ideas. He dedicated over 5 decades of work and love into Camp Saulaine. He always had big plans and projects.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. Funeral service at 11:00 a.m. on January 27, 2018 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Latvian Church of Toronto, 200 Balmoral Ave., Toronto.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Latvian Cultural Centre or St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Latvian Church of Toronto - Saulaine.
