Langford Dr CooperLANGFORD III, Dr. Cooper H.  - Dr. Cooper H. Langford III, PhD., FRSC, Professor of Chemistry at the University of Calgary, widely respected across Canada and worldwide as a teacher, researcher and mentor, died peacefully on March 11, 2018 following a battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was a working scientist to the end of his life, as he wished to be.

He is survived by his wife Denise Langford and his children Cooper, Holly and Robert.

As a teacher, a researcher and administrator, Dr. Langford made significant contributions to the field of chemistry and environmental science, to the study of the sociology of science, innovation and entrepreneurship, to the advancement of Canadian scientific research on the world scene and to the Calgary community.

He was equally committed to teaching and research, always maintaining an undergraduate courseload and a research group, even while he occupied department chairs, administrative posts and directorships at Canadian institutions devoted to advancing research and science education, such as the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the Arctic Institute of North America and the Calgary Science Centre.

His career spanned 6 decades, 5 of them in Canada. He was named as a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1992.

He will be missed by colleagues, friends and former students at the University of Calgary, Concordia University in Montreal, Carleton University in Ottawa and Amherst College in Massachusetts, not to mention by the many scientists he mentored who are working around the world today.

A Celebration of Life for Dr. Cooper H. Langford III, will be organized in the near future, to be held in Calgary, Alberta.
