Lang John EdwardLANG, John Edward  - April 13, 1942 - May 5, 2018

In the early morning hours of May 5, 2018, John died peacefully after stoically navigating through end-stage pancreatic cancer.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 50 years, Margaret Ann Lang (née Warren), his sons Warren, David and Matthew, his daughters-in-law Heather Adam, Martha Lang and Jennifer Trinier and his grandchildren Hannah, Cameron, Peter and Natalie, all of whom adored their "Duke."

Born in Oshawa, John grew up in Montreal before attending the University of Toronto to study Physics, completing a Bachelor of Science in 1964 and a Master's degree in 1966.

Following graduation, he embarked on a 34-year career with Imperial Oil Corporation, which culminated in his role as Director, Executive Organization and Development.

Throughout his career, John was an active supporter of the arts, serving as President of the National Ballet School, Fundraising Chair for the Stratford Festival and board member for Tafelmusik Toronto and the Canadian Opera Company. John also spent a decade studying literature part-time at Victoria College, University of Toronto, completing a Bachelor's degree in 1996.

Following his retirement in September 2000, John remained characteristically active, including volunteering at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre for the last 12 years in both the Odette Cancer Centre and the Emergency Department. He was also editor of the Sunnybrook volunteer newsletter in its various forms and coordinated the Joy of Life ceiling tile donor program.

For his service, John was recognized with a 2017 Province of Ontario Volunteer Award.

John's greatest joy was spending time with his family while travelling or at their Lake Joseph cottage.

John and his family wish to thank the committed and expert staff at Sunnybrook for their exceptional care and ask that, in lieu of flowers, donations are made to the Sunnybrook Foundation.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, May 11, 2018, at 4:00 p.m. at the Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre, followed by a reception on site.
