O'BRIEN, John Martin 'Jack' O'Brien - Obituary | Print |

O'BRIEN, John Martin 'Jack' -   "Express Condolences"

OBrien_JohnFebruary 28, 1928 - September 19, 2014

Died peacefully, at home in his bed, on Friday September 19, 2014 at the age of 86.

Jack was widely and well liked by good people. A lively conversationalist, a careful listener, a thoughtful, generous friend, and often the life of the party, he now joins his brothers Bill (Fr. William H. O'Brien, CSB), Mike, Jim, Paul, Tom, brother-in-law George, and niece Veronica in the great game of 'Chase the Ace' in the sky.

He leaves his sisters Mary and Kathleen, nieces Maureen, Mary, Patricia and Sarah, nephews Chris, David, Mike, Tom, Pat, Joe, Billy, Jimmy, Johnny, Michael, Martin and Richard, and 'grandchildren' Maisy and Wilt (who were actually his great-niece-and-nephew, but he gave up on explaining the genealogy to his neighbours, and just went with their assumption) full of cherished memories of a beloved sibling and uncle.

A St. Michael's man, his career in banking took him from Indian Road and Vanderhoof Avenue, to Vancouver and Montreal, then back home to Toronto, where he continued to practice his faith in Catholicism, the Blue Jays and the Maple Leafs, and made friends regularly with his quick wit and crackling laugh.

A special thank you to the staff at Isabel and Arthur Meighen Manor for their tireless work helping John over the last five or so years, you eased his struggles with kindness and care.

As he himself would say, 'Parting is such sweet sorrow'. It sure is, Uncle John. Ta-ta.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at TRULL 'NORTH TORONTO' FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTRE, 2704 Yonge St. (5 blocks south of Lawrence Ave.) on Wednesday October 1, 2014 at 7:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, please tip generously somewhere.

BIRRELL, Peter Birrell - Obituary | Print |

BIRRELL, Peter -

A man of his word, a man of integrity, a loving and generous husband, father, grandfather and brother - all phrases that described Peter Birrell who passed away at the age of 87 early in the morning of September 19, 2014 from complications of a stroke.

He will be dearly missed by his children Eleanor Walters (Terry), Alan Birrell (Irene) and Douglas, his grandchildren Lea Giglia (Steve), Nicholas Walters, Erin Walters, Carolyn Birrell and Alexandra Birrell and great- granddaughter Isla Giglia. A chemist by training (BSc, summa cum laude, University of Edinburgh) he took up an executive position at Dominion Colour Corporation, retiring as President of the company in 1997. Peter and Ann met in Tobermory, Scotland and were married for over 50 years.

It's safe to say that the two most defining moments of his life were when he met Ann in 1953 and when he lost her to cancer in 2008. His enjoyment of life was never the quite the same without her. Peter was also predeceased by his brother Raymond and his sisters Eva and Lexie. Peter and Ann loved to travel, a love they shared with their children and grandchildren on family trips to Hawaii, Bermuda, Bahamas and, of course, Scotland.

Peter took great pleasure in being able to provide his family, particularly his grandchildren, with wonderful experiences and special memories from those trips.

Funeral will be held in Ancaster on Wednesday, September 24th.

In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice in Peter's memory would be most welcome.

With heavy hearts we mourn the loss of our beloved dad and Opa who in his 79th year, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family.

In the early days, he was a track marshal for many years at Mosport. He loved to travel and has been all over the world with his family. He was known to favour a pretzel, was an authority on a great burger, wedding soup, a pint and anything chocolate.

THORN, Robert Gordon Thorn - Obituary | Print |

THORN, Robert Gordon -

Of Pefferlaw, Ontario died peacefully at home on September 19, 2014 in his 94th year.

Born March 31, 1921 in Millbrook to George and Annabelle (Nicholson) Thorn, he was the first child of 10 children. Raised on the home farm, Gordon left to work at neighbouring farms and then joined the Royal Canadian Air Force #R187978 in 1942, serving in Prince Rupert and Langara Island, BC.

Gordon and Hilda married in 1946 and raised their four children in Unionville, Ontario. Gordon was self-made man. He started delivering milk and groceries in Toronto and then he purchased a mobile feed mixer and built the business to five grinders. He then brought the feed mill in Newmarket and Stroud to formulate feed for animals. This is where his talents grew. Without any formal training, Gordon began custom formulation of feeds, based on the unique needs of the farm and herd. His knowledge has grown into a legacy of feed formulation that is on the edge of new approaches to animal health.

Upon his retirement Gordon put his knowledge of health into counselling people in the use of vitamin and mineral supplements for health challenges and terminal illness. It was one of his last tasks to create a handout on “Your Health is in your Hands."

Gordon will be missed by his family and friends as well as many others for his independence of thought and life and his willingness to help nature and people wherever he could.

“What is the terror of death, That we die our work incomplete.
What is the joy of life, To die knowing our task is done”.
