GREGORY, Donald Ralph 'Don' Gregory Obituary | Print |

GREGORY, Donald Ralph 'Don' -

Gregory_DonSgt. RCAF WWII.  Peacefully at The Brant Centre Long Term Care Residence in Burlington, Ontario on January 23, 2015, Don Gregory passed into his new life.

A local boy who never forgot his roots, Don was able to recount great memories throughout his life. Born in Burlington on June 18, 1922 and a lifetime resident, Don was predeceased by his loving and gracious wife Sylvia (Wallhouse) in 2010 and by his parents William and Winifred Gregory, sister Millicent and brother Albert.

His determination and fortitude were admired by his family and he will be missed by his children Donna McGreal (Jim), Burlington; Wendy Gregory-Harlow (Ron), Nanaimo, BC; Victoria Fitton (Frank), Brown’s Bay, BC; and David Gregory (Margaret), Hamilton. Kindly remembered by grandchildren Kelly (Chris), Debbie (Jeremy), Lisa (Steve), Lane (Miranda), Derek (Marissa), Shane (Brandi), Kala (Dave), Deanna (Ryan), Sarah and Daniel and by several great-grandchildren.

In his early years, Don attended Burlington Central Public and High Schools. He played minor league hockey for the local team and worked diligently delivering produce for local farmers as well as delivering groceries by bicycle from the downtown grocery store to the town residents.

At 18 years of age he joined the RCAF, was trained in communications and was sent overseas to the south of England during World War II. He was awarded the British Empire Medal for his exemplary contribution to the war. He met Sylvia in Hastings, they were married overseas and returned to Burlington after the war. He then enrolled and graduated in Electrical Engineering from Ryerson Institute.

Don was the owner of Gregory Radio on Brant Street which he opened in 1948. It was his privilege to serve the people of Burlington when he expanded the business from radio to small and major appliances, TV and later colour TV. For many years he had the only “Record Bar” in town which was frequented by his many customers and was a popular place for local teens on Saturdays.

Don was an avid golfer and was a past and very active member of the Burlington Golf and Country Club where he won the senior men's championship two years in a row. He was also an avid gardener and his roses won several civic awards and we all thoroughly enjoyed his crop of tomatoes every year. The restoration of the Freeman Train Station in Burlington was of special interest to Don and he was happy to receive his Lifetime Membership certificate in 2014.

Arrangements out of Burlington. A private family memorial service will take place at a later date.

Special gratitude is extended to the loving and caring staff at Park Avenue Manor, especially Janine Jaconelli and the Appleby wing staff at the Brant Centre in Burlington. Loving and kind caregiver, Ellenor Tisch, will never be forgotten and the family owes her a debt of gratitude.

If so desired, donations may be made to the Friends of Freeman Station, Burlington (http://www.freemanstation.ca).
