LUCY, Ernest (Ernie) S. Lucy - Obituary | Print |

LUCY, Ernest 'Ernie' S. -   "Express Condolences"

Lucy_Ernest(September 23, 1923 - October 14, 2014)

"You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days" (Kahlil Gibran), as they did on October 14, 2014.

At the end of a rich life, filled with love, Ernie Lucy died at home, wrapped in the arms of his cherished wife and soul mate, Lorraine Beattie.

Ernie dearly loved and was greatly loved by his two daughters Robin and Alison, his sister Norma Jean Hart and her beautiful family and his brother-in-law, Paul Beattie (Rosa). Treasured and loving friends at home and afar mourn the loss of the wonderful man he was.

Ernie lived a textured life. Born an American in Rochester, New York (September 23, 1923), Ernie chose to become a Canadian later in life. After serving for three years in the American Army Air Force during WWII, he studied at Hobart College, and pursued graduate studies in Social Psychology, Sociology and Industrial Relations at the universities of Minnesota and Illinois.

Following a career in industry, including management positions in manufacturing and industrial relations, he joined the University of Waterloo in 1963. As Director of Personnel, part of his UW legacy is that, with the support of university leaders, he ensured that the same pension and benefit provisions were available to all members of the University. Ernie retired from UW as Dean of Students in 1991. His success in that role was evident partly in the extent to which student leaders sought his counsel long after he left the University.

A voracious reader and follower of current events, a sailor, a car buff and a movie fan, Ernie's mantra was always, "someday is now." He seized and savored every moment. He leaves us with exquisite memories and takes with him a part of all who loved him. A beautiful life has been lived.

Throughout his illness, Ernie and Lorraine had a special place in their hearts for his many caregivers: his oncologists, his palliative physicians and his unfailingly devoted nurses of Red Cross Care Partners (especially Heather and Laura, with him from the beginning, and also Diane and Lasha). Their many kindnesses will be appreciated forever.

In keeping with Ernie's wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place.

A private family service will be held. Instead of sending flowers as expressions of sympathy, please send flowers to someone you love.

The glory of life is love. Unending.
