Passed away peacefully at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket on Saturday, August 9, 2014, three days after her 91st birthday.

Loving wife and best friend of the late Jack Rettie (1986). Cherished mother of Gail and Alex Grant and Scott and Christine Rettie. Beloved grandmother of Derek Grant, Jeff and Christine Grant, Christopher, Ian and Sara Rettie. Admired great-grandmother of Atlanta, Ben, Alexandra and Jack Grant. Survived by her brother, Ralph Brace and many nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by her brother, Lloyd. Daughter of the late Alfred and Elsie Brace.

Gwen was born in Toronto on August 6, 1923. She was a generous, spirited lady who enjoyed a long and rewarding life filled with the joys of family and friends.

Her sense of community led her to many activities, including 43 years of service as a volunteer at York County Hospital.

Funeral service will be held at Trinity United Church in Newmarket on Wednesday, August 13th at 1 p.m.

Special thanks for the friendship and care of residents and staff at Barton Retirement Home and a most special thank you to Rita Wieland for her friendship and support.

Peacefully on Saturday, August 9, 2014 Bernadette passed away at the age of 84.

Predeceased by her beloved husband of 47 years Jim Robinson of Oshawa and her daughter Dale Robinson.

Bernadette is survived by her children Ted and Tracey Robinson, Anne and Jim Malloy and Greg Robinson. Grandmother to Macaulay, Hannah and James Robinson and Danny and Kelly Malloy. Bernadette was the last of eight children of Alice (nee Sullivan) and James Ryan of Toronto. She leaves behind many nieces, nephews and friends, all who loved her dearly. Bernadette and her infectious smile made your heart warm no matter who you were. She was active in the community in Mississauga and Muskoka, raising money for local charities.

Bernie was a devout Catholic and member of the Catholic Women's League (CWL) for many years, where she was known for her annual St. Patrick's Day Party. Another charity that Bernie raised money for was Vita Manor, a home for unwed mothers in Mississauga. She also supported SickKids Hospital for 43 years, the local arts community and raised money for the South Muskoka Memorial Hospital in Bracebridge. Bernie had a special way of leaving a lasting impression on anyone she met.

The Robinson Family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Granite Ridge Retirement Community in Gravenhurst, where she spent her last few years, and the staff of South Muskoka Memorial Hospital in Bracebridge, where she spent her last few days under their care. Special thanks to Doris Walker and Kelly Hammond, who took such good care of our mom and made her last few years easier. Jacky Finlayson, how can we thank you?! You were mom's friend, companion and lifeline for years. You filled her heart (and ours) with joy. We can only hope that everyone finds their 'Jacky'. She was lucky to have you and so are we.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church, 2300 Burnhamthorpe Rd. W., Mississauga, Ontario L5L 3T6 on Thursday, August 14, 2014 at 1 p.m.

Statton_Bruce(October 17, 1935 to August 9, 2014) - Bruce passed away peacefully at home in Uxbridge after a brave battle with cancer (formerly of Scarborough).

Former Toronto Firefighter and former Scarborough Public Utilities Commission Employee.

Bruce was looked after by an extraordinary palliative care team which included his daughter Lisa. Beloved husband of 58 years to Violet. Much loved father of the late David (Maru), Deborah (Andy), Darlene and Lisa. Proud grandpa of Connie, Elysha (Brandon), Jacob, Bruce, Emma and Larissa. Dear great-grandpa of Mason and Cole.

Sadly missed by his sister Ruth Christmas (the late Les), brother Frank (Joyce), sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Florence and Jim Bushby, Pamela Monson, Helen Monson, Bill Monson and George and Carlene Monson; Dorothy Harrington, Jean Graham, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by his parents Frank Statton and Vera Marshall (nee Cryderman/ Statton), his brother Lorne (the late Verna), his sister Verna Attaway (the late Bert) and his son David (Maru). Special thanks to "The Boys": Jim Hord, Craig Watling and George Markle for their love and support.

Bruce was an avid volunteer throughout his life which included: coaching West Hill and Agincourt Boys Hockey and West Hill Boys Baseball, coaching Seven Oaks Girls Softball, Scarborough Centenary Health Centre, driving for Community Care Durham and co-founding the Uxbridge Cruise-In car show.

Bruce enjoyed taking care of Violet, dancing, playing the Jew's/juice harp, listening to music, volunteering, collecting classic automobiles, attending car shows, running the Uxbridge Cruise-In car show, raising funds for Community Care Durham, monthly Firefighters' breakfasts, St. Paul's Leaskdale Men's breakfasts, umpiring slo-pitch and softball in Scarborough, attending live theatre in Scarborough and North York, camping at Donro Trailer Park and hanging out with family and friends.

Until we meet again, we will miss your unconditional love for Violet, your jokes (most of them), your innate sense of direction, your love of dancing, your talent for whistling, your cat noises and your infectious smile. And most of all Dad, thank you for showing us that the same intense love at 18 years of age can last until 78.

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Edward R. Steger on Saturday August 9, 2014.

Loving husband to Charlotte for 50 years, doting father to Caroline (Mark Accardo) and Monique (James Donnelly).

Loving grandfather (Opa) to Elijah and Jamie, who shared his passion for the farm and tractors. They will miss their Opa terribly. Edward came to Canada in 1957 and built a wonderful life including a successful business. He will be missed by all who knew him.

A true gentleman whose optimism, generosity, kindness and incredible sense of humor touched everyone around him.

Visitation will take place on Thursday, August 14, 2014 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at JERRETT FUNERAL HOME, 6191 Yonge Street (2 lights south of Steeles).

The funeral will take place on Friday, August 15, 2014 @ 10 am at Blessed Trinity Church, 3220 Bayview Avenue at Cummer. A reception for friends and family will follow the service in the church hall.

With family at his side, Donald MacPherson Thompson, of Bradford, formerly of Newmarket and Toronto and with many family connections in the Paisley area of Bruce County, passed away in Newmarket, Saturday, August 9, 2014, following a brief illness.

He was 80 years old. Don is survived by his four children: Janet (Rod) McNeil of Toronto, Brad Thompson of Thornhill, Gord (Lisa) Thompson of Toronto and James Thompson of Mississauga and grandchildren Trevor, Kyle, Holly, Skye, Melissa, Christopher and Graeme. He is also survived by his former wife Cathy Thompson and is survived by his longtime partner Elizabeth (Betty) McCann.

Don was predeceased by his first wife Mary (Galbraith); daughter- in-law Cathy; his brother Jack Thompson; sister-in-law Ina Thompson; and his parents James and Alma (Mac) Thompson (MacPherson). Don grew up in the Toronto of the '30s and '40s but made his way up to Bruce County as a youngster and teen to holiday with his parents' families there.

As a result he adopted "The Bruce" as his second home and visited often throughout his life.

Don enjoyed a long retirement from a career with CN Rail and throughout his retirement wintered in Haines City, Florida. 

Funeral service will be held in the sanctuary, Westminster Presbyterian Church, 260 Queen St., Paisley, Friday, August 15, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Shelly Butterfield-Kocis officiating.  Interment to follow.

Wieler_IrmgardBorn July 29, 1938 in Altona, Manitoba, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2014 at The Scarborough Hospital (Birchmount Campus) in Toronto, Ontario at the age of 76.

Loving mother of daughter Sonya and son James; beloved sister of brothers Alfred, Peter and Henry, and sister Edith, Irmgard was a vibrant woman who loved poetry, literature, political discourse and debate; and was a fierce defender of women’s rights and the equal and fair treatment of all persons.

 She was beautiful yet modest and giving; tiny yet strong and determined; intellectual yet open-minded and humble, and will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

At Irmgard’s request, no formal service will be held.

Notice will follow about an informal celebration of life to be held in Manitoba at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made in her name to the Canadian Women’s Foundation, an organization dedicated to giving women and girls in Canada a chance for a better life.

Loving and cherished husband of Maria (née Kirbis) for 64 years. Beloved father of daughter Slavica Alicia Benko & her husband Simon Bilodeau of Montreal, son the late Frank Benko & his wife Kelly (née Lee) of Singapore, son the late Robert Benko & his wife Tammy (née Dorman) and son Edward Benko & his wife Heather (née Gilbride).

Opa will be dearly missed by his grandchildren of whom he was proud and loved so much: Tayler and Nicholas (Edward), Joshua and Wyatt (Frank), and Jack, Natalie and Katie (Robert).

Born June 19, 1926 in Domajince, Slovenia into a loving and deeply religious family attached to their beloved parents the late Janez and Helena (née Skraban).

Survived by sister Marjeta Kvas, brother Leopolde Benko & his wife Tilika, sister Anica Mikolich and sister Ivanka Flisar in the greater Toronto area and in Slovenia by sister Tilika Zilavec, brothers Franc Benko and Vili Benko.

Worked for General Motors, Oshawa from the Fall of 1961 to his retirement in July 1991.

Deeply devoted to his family and faith. A lover of all things mechanical, Al could invent and fashion the tool as needed for any project. Always active, in his last years he best enjoyed being outside, in the garden, tending the vegetable patch and fruit trees.

We love and miss you. Rest in peace - we shall all be together again in the presence of the Lord.

We are grateful and wish to thank the family for their support during this difficult time. Sincere thanks to the kind nurses, staff and social workers at Lakeridge Whitby (4th Floor - Nurse practioner Michelle Acorn, social worker Christine Lanz) and Lakeridge Oshawa (5th Floor C Wing - Mary McAvoy, administrator, social worker Angela) who cared for him since May.

Our appreciation and thanks also to Father Manuel Duterte for the ministry to the sick at both Oshawa and Whitby.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday August 12th at St. Mary of the People Catholic Church, Oshawa at 7 pm.

It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of Elaine. Much too soon.

Predeceased by her parents Lawrence and Hilda Jira and her sister Shirley Johnson. Survived by her loving husband Thomas, daughter Danette Jeoffroy (Mike), step-son Robert Bent (Leo), brother Al Jira (Sandra), brother-in-law Ernest Johnson, grandchildren Taylor, Tatiana, Jaiden and Dyllon. Will be greatly missed by her uncles and aunts Herb and Ruth Wagner, Elmer and Jean Becker, many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

The family wishes to thank our family doctor Sheldon Cheskes and his staff, Dr. R. Osbourne and the many doctors and nurses at Sunnybrook. We would also like to thank the many friends that assisted in the caring for Elaine.

June 21, 1929 - August 8, 2014

At age 85, Harding died at Toronto Western Hospital after a sudden illness.

Father of Kate (Doug Gerhart) and Alec (Deanna) and proud grandparent "Bapu" to Darcy and Colin Gerhart. A man of immense curiosity and intellect, he was charming, stubborn and particular. He loved to make puns, plan idiosyncratic expeditions and challenge the status quo. He delighted in creatures, small children and obscure facts.

Born in Montreal, Quebec, he attended Macdonald High School in Sainte-Anne- de-Bellevue and joined the Royal Canadian Army Cadets during WWII. He worked summers with the Geodetic Survey of Canada while earning his B.Sc. at McGill University and his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago.

He joined the teaching faculty of the University of Toronto Psychology Department in the late 1950s, where he set up the original laboratory at Sidney Smith Hall and became an Associate Professor and later Undergraduate Secretary, retiring in 1994.

An active member of the New Democratic Party, Harding ran for federal office in Rosedale in 1963 and 1965, managed campaigns and was a tireless canvasser and sign crew member. He was twice married and divorced, to Carroll Atwater (died December 2, 2013) and to Patricia Gordon Boast (died July 14, 2014).

In later life he became a Buddhist, learned Ojibwe, followed the Blue Jays, enjoyed baroque music and spent many hours with his grandchildren.

The family is very grateful for the love and care of Jayne-Ann Steele, Rodolfo and the staff of Full Bloom Health and Kensington Gardens.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, September 22, 2014 at 4 p.m. at the University of Toronto Faculty Club, 41 Willcocks St. Donations in memoriam may be made to the Toronto Field Naturalists.
