CHAPIN, Bill Chapin - Obituary | Print |

CHAPIN, Bill -

January 2, 1922 - April 11, 2014

Peacefully in his sleep. Beloved husband of the late Winnifred Amy Chapin.

Past Master of Anthony Sayer Lodge 640 A.F.&A.M. and 32nd degree member of The Scottish Rite. Bill will be sadly missed by his children; Christopher Chapin (Sara), Beverly Chapin-Hill (Dan), Leslie Chapin (Anthony) grandchildren; David, Andrea, Christopher, Melissa, Adam and great-grandson Daniel Grafton Hill V. Bill was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, gifted and compassionate lawyer, honourary fellow of the Academy of Medicine, past Deputy Reeve of Long Branch, and avid gardener.

He contributed to the community through his work with Scouting, Lions Club, Masonic Lodge and municipal politics. His biggest love next to his family was Muskoka.

The family cottage became a compound due to his generosity and he loved nothing more than to sit on the deck with a cup of tea or a more potent brew (he was master of the martini and inventor of the lethal "Canadian Sleigh Ride"). Bill's sense of humour and playfulness lit up any room and his children and grandchildren will never forget his Uncle Wiggly stories or his kind and generous heart. Bill loved life, his family and delighted in his grandchildren and great- grandson. His patience knew no bounds. He handled his children's car and boat crashes with equanimity and humour as they learned to drive. He loved with endless patience, lived his life with charm and dignity and his word was his bond.

Our hearts will hold him and miss him forever. Special thanks to Dr. McDowell and the staff at Sunrise of Oakville.

If wished, donations to a children's charity of your choice.

A service to celebrate his life will be held on Tuesday, 7 p.m. at Wesley Mimico United Church, 2 Station Rd., Etobicoke.

In lieu of flowers, friends and family are asked to make a donation in her name to one of: the Canadian Diabetes Association, an Alzheimer's Association or support group, to the Humane Society/SPCA or an animal shelter of their choice.

Planting a tree or donating a bench with a view of the ocean, river or pond for passersby to rest was also among her last wishes.

Elise was always a bit of a gypsy and one of the expressions she picked up in her travels was, as they say in Texas, "Keep on keeping on", so that's what we'll do.
