REES, George Rees - Obituary | Print |

REES, George -

January 21, 1943 - May 31, 2015

George Rees, 72, passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2015 at 10:32 a.m. with his family by his side at Trillium Health Centre after a well-fought battle.

He is remembered by his loving family, wife Marlene, children Shawn and daughter-in-law Donna, Joanne, Dean, Cassie and Austin. Grandfather to Daniel and Stephanie. Great-grandfather to little George. Although he was nicknamed the "Grump," he brought love, life and laughter to everyone he came across. One of the most caring men you could ever meet. He was as stubborn as an ox, but always willing to make you feel like you belonged no matter where you came from.

Made the best Newfie dinner across all the Maritime Provinces and always made sure your belly was full. He would welcome you with open arms into his home with a smile on his face. We miss you so much but we will see you again. Go be with your brothers and sisters, Nan and Pop who have gone before you. Drink some beer and have a scoff. We love you.

Friends may call at the Turner & Porter "Neweduk-Erin Mills" Chapel, 1981 Dundas St. W., Mississauga, ON, on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m.

Funeral Service will be held at St. Peter's Anglican Erindale Church (3041 Mississauga Rd.) on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at 2 p.m.

SNOW, Judith Snow - Obituary | Print |

SNOW, Judith -

October 29, 1949 - May 31, 2015

The colours of Judith Snow were vibrant, flagrant, unabashedly in the forefront of the forefront: a social inventor, a trailblazer, a relentless advocate for inclusion.

She championed communities that welcome diversity, including all persons with disabilities, especially people who do not speak in voice, as full contributing citizens in communities. She was an unstoppable dreamer, an courageous instigator, motivator and challenger. She was a visionary, a muse, an author, a speaker, an actor, an artist. Born with quadriplegia, Judith advocated for and attained the first ever government funding to pay directly for her attendant care. This precedent in Canada and the world has liberated people around the globe.

She inspired and founded the Joshua Committee - to liberate herself - and this led to the creation of Circles of Support around the world. She was a founding member of the Marsha Forest Centre and of the Individualized Funding Coalition for Ontario.

She created Canada's first post-secondary learning support program at York University. As an author, trainer and educator for over 40 years, she travelled widely: the US, UK, Europe, the Caribbean and Canada. Judith's impact remains worldwide. As a faculty member with the Asset-Based Community Development Institute and a founder and leader of numerous community-based and non-profit organizations, Judith has supported and led community development locally and internationally.

In 2003, Judith developed Laser Eagles Art Guild and discovered that she was a visual artist herself. Judith inspired us all with her incredible gifts of spirit, wisdom, skill, revolutionary insight and unquenchable positive energy. She was a powerful, energetic instigator of community action and peace. Judith is forever a doorway opening to a world that sees different, looks different, thinks different, is different, embraces difference. She was funny, a dear friend, a philosopher, a leader.

Her entire life was dedicated to the vision: "There really is no disability: People are always contributing something."

The work is to see the value and potential in what they are contributing and build that through relationships into community and economic opportunities.  "And in Judith speak:"  "You think too small."

Judith's family and loved ones want to honour her life at her funeral, which will be held Saturday, June 6th at 1:30 p.m. at Metropolitan United Church, 56 Queen Street East in Toronto.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Individualized Funding Coalition for Ontario, c/o 611 - 695 Coxwell Avenue, Toronto, ON.

DeJULIO, Grace DeJulio - Obituary | Print |

DeJULIO, Grace -

1924 - 2015

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our cherished mother and grandmother, Grace DeJulio in her 91st year.

She was born in Toronto in Little Italy, one of six children to Francesco and Vincenza Grieco. She was the eldest of the four beautiful Grieco girls (Carmie Peters, Mary Penny and Sandy Pannozzo) and two devoted brothers (Joe and Peter). She was the treasured wife of our dad who left her embrace a mere 3 months ago.

She leaves behind her heartbroken children Peter (Vesna), Barbara, Maryanne (Raul) and Annmarie (Jeff). Devoted "Nani" to Marisa, Daniella, Aloysia, Daniel, Gabriela and Joseph. Her grandchildren were her life and laughter.

She was a special "Auntie Gracie" to many nieces and nephews. She had a passion for reading, sewing, crossword puzzles, Jeopardy, her coffee and pizzelle and chatting on the phone with her many friends.

Our mom has left us with wonderful memories of her sense of humour, her lullabies, her affection, youthfulness and exuberance for life. Our mom was our best friend. She was trustworthy, generous and encouraging. We take comfort in knowing that she walks arm-in-arm with her Danny once again.
