PROUT, Cynthia Blanche (Atkins) Prout - Obituary | Print |

PROUT, Cynthia Blanche (nee Atkins) -

Prout_CynthiaIt is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Cynthia Prout at the Bowmanville Hospital on Saturday, July 19th, 2014 at the age of 77.

Cynthia is survived by her beloved husband Luke, her children Martha Hendrikx (the late Mark), Adam Hickey (Victoria) and her step children Kim Prout (Laurie) and Donnie and Randy Prout.

She will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren: Marissa, David (Kendra), Daniel, Rebecca and Vincent Hendrikx; Tyler and Oliver Hickey; Kym Prout and Hunter Sol Prout. Terribly missed by her 4-legged family of cats and dogs.

Remembered fondly by the Hickey family, the Hannah family, Pierrette Godin, the Burnett family and her large A.A. family.

Cynthia was born in Bangalore, India just before WWII, where her father was stationed with the British Army. She came to Canada when she was 11 years old, settling in Toronto, then marrying and having children in the Brampton area.

When her children were little she moved up to the Yukon for a few years, before settling in Clarington, Ontario where she met the love of her life, Luke. Having worked her whole life, she went back to night school to get her degree at McMaster in Addictions and Mental Health, then used that to help start and later become, the Director of Destiny Manor, a drug and alcohol rehab centre for women.

Six years ago, Cynthia’s life was changed forever with a car accident when the other driver was on her cell phone, ran two red lights and smashed into Luke and Cynthia. Cynthia suffered brain damage and suffered slowly for six years, then very rapidly for the past few months. Despite this, Cynthia remained a loyal and loving friend and family member. She was to have celebrated her 37th A.A. anniversary this coming December, an accomplishment she was extremely proud of.

Thanks to the amazing Dr. Albert, Dr. John Rundle and the nurses on the 2nd floor of Bowmanville Hospital. Cynthia was treated with nothing other than respect, dignity and love during her stay. We very much appreciate all they did for her and us, during these final two weeks.

Visitation will be held at NORTHCUTT ELLIOTT FUNERAL HOME, 53 Division Street North, Bowmanville, on Monday, July 28th from 2-4 and 6-8 pm.

A Memorial Service will be held at TRINITY UNITED CHURCH (120 Church St.) on Tuesday July 29, 2014 at 1pm.

Donations in Cynthia’s name may be made to the Clarington Animal Shelter, as she definitely loved her animals.

THOMPSON, Keitha (Jackson) Thompson Obituary | Print |

THOMPSON, Keitha (nee Jackson) -

Thompson_KeithaPassed away peacefully and in her own time with her family by her side on Saturday, July 19th, 2014 at Ian Anderson House in Oakville, Ontario after a decade-long battle with cancer.

Survived by Raymond – her husband, true love and best friend of 49 years - her daughter, Jennifer (Chris Logan), and her son, Christopher (Jen Cuddie).

Born to Lois and Carson Jackson on April 12th, 1942 in Pembroke, Ontario, Keitha and her older sister, Joyce, “ruled lower town” according to a childhood friend. Upon graduating from Pembroke Collegiate, Keitha moved to Ottawa to attend Teacher’s College in 1963.

At the same time, Cupid’s arrow struck in a ’61 Pontiac convertible in the form of a double date; Keitha fell in love with a handsome young man from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan – and the rest is history.  Young love and hopes for a future together led to marriage in August of 1965 and, with half a century together, Keitha and Ray created a family and far more memories than either could have ever hoped for.

As a homemaker, Keitha took great pride in and garnered great joy from her home, nurturing sweet tooths from Montreal to Louisville, Kentucky with her mother’s famous orange cake recipe, and in her garden with the hostas, ferns and succulents which were among her favourites. Not far from home, Keitha could be found hunting for the perfect piece of pine or pressed glass at country auctions, improving her hand at bridge or curling up and getting lost in a good book.

Keitha will be remembered by her family and friends as a feisty, fun-loving and honest woman whose sense of humour – complete with her infectious laugh – was equalled only by her sense of loyalty. Keitha cared unconditionally and without question for those lucky enough to have been in her life, and it’s fair to say her presence made life easier for everyone around her.

Keitha saw cancer as a chronic condition; not a death sentence. She lived her last 10 years with her eyes toward the positive. Our gratitude to Dr. Mary Manno, Dr. Martin Blackstein and Dr. Eitan Amir, the Outpatient Oncology Clinic team at Mount Sinai Hospital, the Radiation Oncology unit at Princess Margaret Hospital, the Neurological unit at Toronto Western Hospital, Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, Ian Anderson House and personal health care workers for their professional commitment to and personal compassion for Keitha.

Our miracle was that she was with us for 10 years after a cancer diagnosis that, by all odds, would have taken her life far earlier. We are so very, very grateful.

An Ottawa Valley girl at heart, Keitha will be buried on Wednesday, July 23rd at 3:00 p.m. in St. Thomas’ Anglican Cemetery in Rankin, Ontario as per her wishes. All are welcome.

A public celebration of Keitha’s life will be held in Oakville, Ontario on Thursday, July 24th.

In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions in Keitha’s name may be directed to Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation ( of Toronto, Ian Anderson House ( of Oakville or the cancer charity of your choice.
