BENNETT, Gordon (Bruce) Bennett - Obituary | Print |

BENNETT, Gordon (Bruce) -

With deepest regrets and broken hearts, we want to let you know of the passing of Bruce on Thursday, November 20, 2014.

His heart just wasn't up to finishing his railway journey across Canada with his newly acquainted cousin Raymond Horne. They took a two-day break in Jasper, Alberta, on the way to Vancouver. It was there that his life with us came to an end from a massive heart attack. He was happy and in his own domain on his final journey.

Bruce knew so many fine people during his life of 79 years and if you were one of the lucky ones, in his circle of family and friends, you'll remember him for his kindness and never-ending caring ways. He was a remarkable, gentle man who brought goodness to everyone, especially those in his lifelong affiliation with the Sixth Toronto Scout Group and during his 28 years with VIA Rail.

Regrettably, he leaves his loving daughter Barbara (Ron) and his buddy and grandson Mitchell and Simba. Predeceased by his loving wife of 43 years Sharon, brother Jack and sister Dorothy. Also survived by sister-in-law Ann, brothers-in-law Bill and Sid, as well as many nieces, nephews and his many friends with the Birch Cliff Heights "gang".

Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 29th at Birchcliff Bluffs United Church, 33 East Road, Scarborough, at 11 a.m. Reception to follow.

Donations to the Sixth Toronto Scout Group and Autism Dog Services in his memory would be appreciated.

BIDWELL, Norma Rae (Clausen) Bidwell Obituary | Print |

BIDWELL, Norma Rae (nee Clausen) -

Bidwell_NormaPassed away peacefully at Hampton Terrace Care Centre on November 20, 2014 in her 99th year.

For more than 63 years she was the beloved wife of Frederick Bidwell who predeceased her in 1997.

Norma was the loving mother of Dr. Peter (Maureen Crawford), Paul (Julie Hampel), and Matthew (Cathy Lorimer) and was predeceased by a young daughter, Michaella and a son James.

Her grandchildren included Martin, Timothy, Diana, Jeremy, Grant, Mark, Medbh, Michael and Megan and she was the proud great-grandmother of Corrie, Misha, Amy, Benjamin, Annalee, Fergus, Alistair, Colm, Stella, Caitlyn, Dylan, Abigail, Alex, Ryan, Aiden and Alexandra.

For many years Norma loved summer holidays at the family cottage on Lake Muskoka (the house that Fred built), especially when it was crowded with her large family and friends, and with constant cooking and cheerful noise. In Muskoka, she and Fred enjoyed boating over to the Church of the Kettles for Sunday services. In Burlington, the Bidwells were longtime faithful members of East Plains United Church.

Born July 9, 1915, in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to Ted and Lucille Clausen, Norma grew up with her sisters Naomi and Glendine and her brother Dale. Having married Fred and moved to Hamilton, Ontario in 1934, she attended McMaster University and was later inducted into its alumni as well as being awarded an honorary LLD in 2008. Four years later, she was named one of “125 people of impact” when McMaster celebrated its 125th anniversary.

She had started her long journalistic career by writing stories for CBC radio and for various magazines. Then, in 1951 she was hired as a district correspondent in the Burlington-Aldershot area for the Hamilton Spectator, later joining the Women’s Department and becoming its food editor until her retirement in 1980, after having won numerous awards for her investigative reporting and travelling to Spain, Denmark, Italy and England chasing food stories.

After retirement, she began writing her popular Spectator column, “Norma’s Stoveline,” answering countless readers’ questions and providing hundreds of cooking tips. In retirement, she also published two cookbooks as well as “Lifelines and Deadlines,” an account of her various adventures in juggling family life with the demands of a daily newspaper. The University of Guelph library now holds her papers in its Archival and Special Collections.

A Funeral Service will be held Friday, November 28th at 10:30 am at East Plains United Church, 375 Plains Road East, Burlington.

In lieu of flowers, contributions towards The Church of The Kettles Restoration Fund (Lake Muskoka, ON) would be greatly appreciated. Please send to the attention of: Mr. Doug Jarrett, 207 Windy Lane, RR #4 Markdale, ON N0C 1H0.

FORCE, William Tom 'Bill' Force - Obituary | Print |

FORCE, William Tom 'Bill'

Born June 9, 1925 in Toronto, grew up in Winnipeg, died peacefully in his sleep on November 20, 2014 at Hospice Wellington in Guelph, succumbing to Parkinson's disease compounded by a twice broken hip and surgery in recent months.

Bill is lovingly remembered by his dear wife of 68 years, Norma, his sons Robert Tom "Rob" (partner in life Anne Steinman), Leonard John "Len" (Anne), William Peter "Bill" (Donna), his grandchildren Sasha (Mike Green), Rebecca Vince (Andy), Heather, Kevin, Shauna, Amy, Richard and Katherine and by great-grandchildren Tristan and Aidhan Vince, Sabrina and Madeleine Force and Cassidy Gendre. He was predeceased by his dear sister Shirley Craig and niece Kerry Craig. In 1943,

Bill enlisted in the RCAF and was stationed at Cape North on Cape Breton Island. He was discharged after WWII, married Norma in 1946 and graduated from the University of Manitoba in Electrical Engineering in 1949.

He and his young family then moved to Toronto where he took a job at Canada Packers Ltd. From graduate engineer to Head of Engineering and ultimately to "Corporate Engineer reporting to the President", Bill led design work for renovations and new facilities at the main Toronto plant and oversaw acquisition and integration into the corporation of facilities and packing operations across Canada and in USA, Britain, Australia and Germany.

This is to say nothing of the cottage he designed, built and enlarged at Canning Lake and has been enjoyed by many family and friends since 1956. Following his retirement, he spent years as a volunteer driver for the Canadian Cancer Society , studied French and German and creative writing and wrote a couple of articles which were published in the Toronto Sun and the Globe and Mail. All along the way, Bill and Norma provided strong moral and financial support particularly to the post-secondary education of their sons and grandchildren.

In later years, macular degeneration stole most of Bill's eyesight and Parkinson's degraded his abilities, but he continued to follow current events on TV and to give guidance in the affairs of his life until the final few months. We are incredibly grateful that Bill's final few days were spent in the calm, supportive and gentle atmosphere of Hospice Wellington.

Many thanks to the wonderful staff and volunteers of that place.

Service will be held in Toronto, on Tuesday, November 25th. Cremation.

In lieu of flowers, we encourage donations to Parkinson Society Canada or Hospice Wellington.
