AVSENIK, Joseph Avsenik - Obituary | Print |

AVSENIK, Joseph -

It is with profound sadness that the family of Joseph Avsenik announces his sudden passing at the age of 79 while on vacation in Slovenia on Saturday, June 15, 2013.

Survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Anna Marie, and his children Joe (Melinda), Frank (Julie), and Kim Marchand (David).

Cherished "Papa Joe" to 8 adoring grandchildren, Joey, Nikolas, Jason, Justin, Jessica, Jacob, Jordan and Jenna. Born March 19, 1934 in Dvorska Vas, Slovenia, Joseph, beloved brother of Jaka, Minka, Alojz (deceased) and Anton (deceased), immigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1959 where, over many years and through hard work and determination, he built a successful shoe business, Celebrity Shoes. Joseph loved spending time with his family and especially enjoyed the time that he shared with his grandchildren.

The joy and pride could be seen in his face while he watched any of his grandchildren play hockey or other sports or as he spent time with them during family get-togethers. Joseph's other passions were his cottage in Everett, Ontario where he spent many hours with his brother Jaka (Jack), the outdoors, and the Slovenian Hunters and Anglers Club where he was a founding member and served as president for seven years.

Although Joseph loved his adopted country of Canada and considered it to be his home, he clung dearly to his Slovenian roots and enjoyed his annual trips back to his home country. Joseph could not have been happier or more proud than he was when he and his entire family visited Slovenia in July 2012, in celebration of his 50th wedding anniversary to Anna Marie.

He was thrilled to be able to share his home-country with his grandchildren and show them, among other things, where he was born, where he grew up, and the beautiful landscapes of Slovenia. The trip to Slovenia with his wife, children and grandchildren was undoubtedly the proudest moment of Joseph's life.

A Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, 739 Browns Line at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 22nd to be immediately followed with a luncheon and celebration of Joseph's life at the adjacent parish banquet hall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cremation has already taken place.

Memorial donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada.
