DEBERT, Henry Debert - Obituary | Print |

DEBERT, Henry -

Passed away on February 21, 2015 at the age of 100. A life well lived! He was predeceased by his mother (Anna), his father (Henry) and three sisters (Lena, Theresa and Kate).

Henry is survived by his grandniece Meg (Rob) and grandnephew John, as well as by his three great- grandnieces Jenny, Michelle and Sophia. Henry was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, to parents who came to Canada in the early 1900s from Eastern Europe. During the Depression he rode the trains in search of work and was present at the Regina Riot of 1935.

After WWII the family moved to Toronto and later Port Credit, where Henry worked as a machinist for the Continental Can Company of Canada. He loved the outdoors and was very active, still riding his bike at 96 years of age.

He was passionate about flying, had an opinion about everything (and wasn't afraid to share!) and could fix anything given a pair of pliers and a coat hanger.

He had a sense of humour and felt strongly about the importance of family and of taking care of each other.

He lived a good long life and he will be sorely missed by his family! He was cremated and, in accordance with his wishes, the family will celebrate his life with a private memorial service.

Special thanks to the staff at Heritage House and Trillium Health Centre and to Dr. Christopher Gilchrist for taking such good care of Henry.

DUFF, Karen Anne Duff - Obituary | Print |

DUFF, Karen Anne (nee GILLIS) -

It is with profound shock and sadness that we announce the sudden loss of Karen, at the age of 58, after a brief illness due to a rare and aggressive cancer on February 21, 2015.

Devoted wife of Graeme for 34 years, loving mother and tireless advocate for Cameron (Cam) and the late Emily (Emmy), beloved daughter of Ken and Judy Gillis, dear sister to Nancy (Bruce), Sandy (Mike) and Scott (Emma), caring aunt and loyal friend.

After graduating from the University of Western Ontario, Karen began a promising career in banking at the Bank of Montreal.   When it became apparent that Cam required more support, she gave up her business career without hesitation.   She worked tirelessly to address Cameron's many needs and provided him with her love and unwavering dedication.

Over the years that followed, Karen threw her dogged determination and boundless love into supporting Emmy through her medical challenges. Her persistence and attentiveness ensured that Emmy got the best possible care throughout her journey. More importantly, she gave Emmy the wings to become a resilient and compassionate young woman who, like her mother, never complained about the inequities of life.

Karen was a devoted volunteer and supported a variety of causes including Centennial Infant and Child Centre, Variety Village, Canadian Association for Riding for the Disabled and Northlea United Church.

Despite the many challenges life threw at her, Karen always found time for others.  Friends and family enjoyed the results of Karen's talents in the kitchen. She loved to read and was constantly ready with book titles or information tidbits.

A memorial service will take place on Friday, March 6, at 1:30 p.m. in NORTHLEA UNITED CHURCH (125 Brentcliffe Road), followed by a reception at the Estates of Sunnybrook (Vaughan Estate), 2075 Bayview Avenue.

If you would like to honour Karen's life, please consider a donation to either of the causes nearest to her heart, The Emmy Duff Scholarship Foundation ( or Cam's Variety Village L.I.N.K.s programme.

LOSPINUSO, Patricia 'Pat' (nee Williams) Lospinuso - Obituary | Print |

LOSPINUSO, Patricia 'Pat' (nee Williams) -

Passed away surrounded by her family at home February 21, 2015 after enduring a brave, yearlong battle with cancer.

Pat was born in Belfast, Ireland. Pat's mother immigrated to Toronto, Canada, following which she developed lifelong friendships with the Carmelite Sisters and lasting friendships in Toronto's Little Italy, where she met her husband Peter, who died in 1984.

An incredibly dedicated Mom, she raised her children Peter, Paul and Trisha while fulfilling roles in travel and hospital administration, most notably Womens' College Hospital's Brief Psychotherapy Centre for Women, where she furthered her natural and deep fascination with human psychology and genuine interest in people. Sharing the interests of her children, she acquired a keen understanding of skateboarding, snowboarding, tennis, cars, hockey and histories of Scotland, England and Ireland.

Pat followed the careers with such amazing interest, acquiring even more knowledge through her informal "studies" in bioethics and engineering. Pat's curiosity and wonder live on with her family.

Proud mother of Peter, Paul (Lynn) and Trisha, devoted Grandma Pat to Andrew and Patrick, beloved special aunt to John (Amanda). She loved her half-brothers Michael, Brian and Sean and being dear auntie to Robbie, Angie, Mary-Anne, Rocky, Raymond, Anthony and Frankie. With a deep faith, Pat accepted every challenge and never complained.

She was incredibly thankful to her friends, all the caring staff on H7 at Toronto East General, Temmy Latner and the CCAC. Pat's desire was to handle this illness with dignity, with many worthy lessons learned by her family throughout her ordeal, we will never forget.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church (Lockwood Rd. at Queen St. E.) on Friday, February 27, 2015 at 10 a.m.
