MARTIN, Edward Stuart 'Ted' Martin - Obituary | Print |

MARTIN, Edward Stuart 'Ted' -

Passed away peacefully December 13, 2013, age 83, at Community Nursing Home, Pickering, Ontario.

Ted was born on March 10, 1930 in Toronto.

He is survived and remembered by his brother Bob and his wife Myrna; also, his brother Don. He was beloved "Uncle Ted" to his nephew Bob (Kathryn) and niece Diane (Dave); great-uncle to Ryan (Jennifer), Rachel (Andrew), Brad and Steve; great-great-uncle to Ben, Jillian and Payslie. The whole of Ted's working life was at The University of Toronto, Wallberg Memorial Building, where he retired after more than 40 years of service.

He was a keen sports enthusiast closely following the Blue Jays and Maple Leafs; collecting their regalia, mementos and programs. He regularly attended their games and in later years avidly followed the play by play on radio, preferring this to TV coverage. His heroes were Foster Hewitt and Gerry Howarth.

Ted was a dedicated equipment manager for many years at Ted Reeve Arena. Come the summer, Ted turned his energies to the Beaches Baseball League at Kew Gardens and worked for decades in its organization. On his retirement from baseball at Kew Gardens, the championship trophy was dedicated in his name. Always a kind and gentle person, Ted made friends, and they were legion, wherever he went. In his retirement he particularly enjoyed and looked forward to visits with his extended family.

Special thanks to the caring staff at Community Nursing Home. Cremation has taken place.

A service will be held for family and friends at a date to be announced.

Donations in Ted's memory may be made to the Salvation Army.

MATTHEWS, James Joseph Mary St. John Matthews - Obituary | Print |

MATTHEWS, James Joseph Mary St. John -

April 26, 1952 - December 13, 2013

Suddenly at the age of 61, our brother Jim passed away from a stroke.

Jim was predeceased by his mother, Catherine O'Driscoll Matthews, his father, Benjamin Francis Matthews, and his youngest brother, Paul Lawrence Matthews. Jim leaves behind his sister, Mary (Jim Archer-Shee), brothers, Anthony, Ben, and Stephen (Margaret Lindsay), and nephews, Nick and Fraser Abe, and Ryan and Adam Matthews. Jim also leaves behind his girlfriend, Vanessa Humble and her children, Danny and Jordon.

Jim was born on a freighter boat off the coast of St. John in very stormy weather. His love affair with boating continued throughout his life, and he particularly enjoyed sailing and competing in the sport. Ironically, Jim suffered his massive stroke while out boating in stormy weather with friends. Jim had numerous interests but his most passionate was rebuilding the farmhouse in Ireland where his mother was born.

Located in the south of Ireland, Jim spent much of his retired life repairing, renovating, and generally upgrading the homestead.

It was a privilege to have him in our life, and we will treasure the memory of him in our hearts, forever.

A Memorial Service will be held in Toronto on Friday, December 20th at 3:00 p.m.

If desired and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Santa Comes to Bay Street, 121 King Street West, Suite 1820, Toronto.

McCARTHY, Thérèse (nee Hogg) McCarthy - Obituary | Print |

McCARTHY, Thérèse (nee Hogg) -

1917 - 2013

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Marie Alice Thérèse McCarthy (Terry), on December 13, 2013 at the age of 96, at North York General Hospital.

She was the loving wife for over 52 years of the late Group Captain (Ret'd) Joseph Porter McCarthy (1999). Terry was also widowed, after an all too brief marriage, from her first husband Jack O'Brien (1942) who was lost while valiantly serving his country during WWII.

After a long and eventful life Terry will be sadly missed by her children Michael O'Brien (Joan), Linda Gobbo (Albert), Paul (Karen), Brian (Janice) and her last remaining sibling, Joan. Cherished grandmother to Christine, Liam, Sean, Ryan, Tara, Meagan, Patrick and great- grandmother to Riley, Sloane, Oscar, Leeroy and Arlo.

Born to Jeanne and Russell Hogg in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Terry was considered the 'matriarch' by Joan and her predeceased siblings, Russell, Isabel and Marguerite. Terry and Joe built a loving and happy life together taking their growing family to live in many far flung places and she was the consummate Air Force spouse. Terry will be fondly remembered by her many nieces and nephews as well as a multitude of friends. The family would like to recognize the caring assistance provided by Amica at Bayview and CCAC during her final years.

A visitation will be held in the Gathering Place at St. Gabriel's Passionist Parish (670 Sheppard Ave. E., North York) starting at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 17, 2013 followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m.

A light reception will follow the Mass in the Gathering Place of the church followed by interment.

Terry was an avid and longtime supporter of ShareLife.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made at www.sharelife.org.

Ray, beloved husband of Marlene.

Dear great-grandad of Carly and Jacob.

Friends and relatives will be received at the GIFFEN-MACK DANFORTH FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTRE, 2570 Danforth Ave. (at Main St. subway station), 416-698-3121, on Wednesday, December 18 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

A service will follow in the Giffen-Mack Chapel at 5 p.m.

God saw Ray was getting tired
When a cure was not to be.

So He wrapped His arms around him
And whispered, "Come to Me".

In tears we saw him sinking,
We watched him fade away.
Our hearts were truly broken,
He fought so hard to stay.

But when we saw Ray sleeping
Peacefully and free from pain,
We could not wish him back
To suffer that again.

So keep Your arms around Ray, Lord,
And give him special care,
Make up for all he suffered,
That seemed to us unfair.

So many times we've needed him,
So many times we've cried.
If love could have saved him,
Ray never would have died
