BATES, Rev. Alphonse Joseph Bates Obituary | Print |

BATES, Rev. Alphonse Joseph, C.S.C.-

Bates_AlphonseOf The Congregation of Holy Cross Region of English Canada, died on October 27, 2014 at the age of 87 at Hospice Niagara in St. Catharines.  He accepted the long, debilitating and progressive advance of cancer with patient endurance without complaining or carping about his fate.

He was predeceased by his father James Bates and his mother Helena Burke; his brother Bro. James Bates, FSC; his brother Fr. Gerard Bates; his sister Romaine Bates a sister of the Halifax Charities and his sister Helen Rainey.

He is survived by his sister Lillian Rainey and brother in law Larry Rainey and their families. His Holy Cross Community, former students, parishioners, members of AA and the Presbyterate of the Niagara Peninsula also mourn his loss.

Born in St. John’s, NL, he grew up in Halifax and graduated from Saint Mary’s University. He was influenced by the mission preaching in his home parish given by Fr. Arnold Toner, CSC, and Fr. Bill McGinnis, CSC. He joined the Congregation of Holy Cross, made his novitiate in North Dartmouth, Mass. and studied theology at Holy Cross College in Washington, D.C.

He began his ministry at Notre Dame College School in Welland, Ontario, where he remained for 23 years as teacher, chaplain, coach, principal and guidance counsellor. As an intelligent, dedicated and caring servant of Catholic education, over many years, he molded and influenced any number of students and teachers with his kindness, encouragement and positive demeanor. For Fr. Bates the glass was always half full never half empty.

His interest in the faith lives, activities, sports and studies of the students was immeasurable. In return he was much beloved by the students, teachers, staff and parents. He was ever sharp and quick witted. He treated everyone equally. He touched many lives with his accepting heart and listening ear. He was a walking gospel for many.

What made him so special in the school environment, he also took with him after leaving Notre Dame and taking up parish ministry. He was pastor and ministered to all ages and in all of life’s varied circumstances. He served at Immaculate Conception in Port Robinson, ON, St. Michael’s in Waterloo, ON and St. Joseph in Snyder, ON. Central to his ministry and to his spirituality over the past 34 years was his presence with members of Alcoholics Anonymous. His guidance and wide-reaching support was critical for many. His unconditional love, humour and humility won the love and respect of the members.

He served as chaplain at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax and Hotel Dieu Hospital in St. Catharines. He was an avid sports fan and almost fanatical about the Fighting Irish of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. He enjoyed horse racing and the camaraderie of poker games with the local clergy. His vacation trips with his good friend, Fr. Ken Burns, CSC were memorable.

He retired in 2001 and moved to the Holy Cross retirement home in Welland. He moved to Hospice Niagara in St. Catharines on September 3, 2014 where he died shortly after midnight on October 27. Special appreciation, praise and gratitude are extended to the nurses and care givers who were so solicitous for the comfort, welfare and needs of Father Bates in Welland and St. Catharines.

Visitation will be held on Friday, October 31st from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at The Parish Community of St. Kevin, 303 Niagara Street, Welland where a Vigil Celebration will take place at 3:00 p.m. with Fr. Don Layden, CSC, Superior of the Holy Cross retirement home presiding.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at The Parish Community of St. Kevin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 1st with Fr. Wilfrid Murchland, CSC, presiding.  Rite of Committal with final commendation will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery with Fr. Vjay Amirtharaj, CSC, presiding.
