O'BRIEN, Frank Gilbert O'Brien - Obituary | Print |

O'BRIEN, Frank Gilbert -

OBrien_FrankFrank passed away peacefully on September 27, 2014 at St. Luke’s Retirement Home, Cambridge at the age of 98. He was born on April 24, 1916 to Gilbert and Stella O’Brien of St. Catharines.

As a young man, Frank worked on the Lake Boats. It was the Depression. He turned over his pay cheque to his mother, 'except for cigarette/spending money.' He joined the Canadian Army in WWII and served in the Signal Corps. He had many stories to tell about the days when he shared chocolates and gifts sent in parcels from Canada with the Dutch family where he boarded. Upon his return to Canada, he worked for Bell Telephone. It was a career he relished and he enjoyed going into work every day. He became an avid golfer and enjoyed Bridge and watching Hockey and Baseball, as well as spending time with his Bell friends.

He married Florence Croth before going overseas; their son, Richard was born in 1947. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife, and his son who died too soon on his son’s 61st birthday. His brothers, Earl (St. Catherines) and Danny (California). His sister Flora Ness (Toronto) also predeceased him. He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Veronica Ross (Bob Green) who cared for him since Richard’s passing, his special granddaughter Kristen Flechtman, nephews Peter Ness (Helen), David Ness (Joan) of Toronto, niece Anne Ness of Ottawa as well as the Croth in-law nieces and nephews.

He always had an optimistic spirit, even after he had to give up driving and playing Bridge due to his macular degeneration. He enjoyed watching sports on T.V. and eating at Swiss Chalet on Sundays. He liked hearing stories and discussing the news and doing Sudoku. He lived alone in his house on Lourdes Street in Waterloo until age 97 when an unfortunate fall resulted in the move to St. Luke’s. A few days before he died he said, 'Young people should find jobs they really like and not be stuck with work they hate.'

The family is grateful for the care provided by St. Luke’s and also for the assistance of the Personal Support Workers from Robertson-Brown.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Frank’s life will be held in Waterloo, on Friday, October 3rd. Interment will take place at a later date.
