SOLOMON, Carl Stanley Solomon - Obituary | Print |

SOLOMON, Carl Stanley -

Passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, on January 13th, at the age of 87. A mere 7 weeks apart from the love of his life, Carl is now reunited with his wife of 61 years, Marlene.

Carl is also reunited in death with his son Marc (1977), first-born grandson David (2011), his loving parents Josephine and Lawrence, his brothers Joe, Stan and John, as well as his sister Helen. Carl is survived by his twin sister Jean Walker, sister Mary Wolek, and his brother Ted. Also survived by his devoted children Keith (Pat), Richard (Michele), Susan (Doug Cunningham), Karen (Geoff Ireland), Peter (Debra), and Nancy, as well as his 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Carl was born and raised in Kitchener and, after multiple moves, settled in Cambridge where he resided happily for 42 years. He took comfort in the fact that his grown children and grandchildren all lived close by. Carl was known locally as the Electrolux salesperson, a role he occupied for over 40 years. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more sincere and honest salesperson, or someone who knew as many different families in his community. In his work life, as in his social life, he was generous to a fault, compassionate and community-minded. Carl was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus Council 4916, in Preston. He started—and for decades managed—the Thursday evening Euchre fundraising card games. The Carl S. Solomon lounge was dedicated to Carl on his 50th wedding anniversary celebration as thanks for all his hard work in overseeing the hall construction, serving as the hall manager, and for his fundraising efforts—the proceeds of which benefited local charities, as well as renovations to, and maintenance of, the hall. Carl thoroughly enjoyed his poker nights with the K of C gang, euchre with friends, and occasional visits to the casino with Marlene.

Carl’s family would like to thank the caregivers at Grand River Hospital Cancer Unit and Oncologist Dr. Janet MacEachern. We would also like to thank the Grand River Hospital oncology ward and the CCAC caregivers for their support, compassion, dedication and professional expertise during Carl’s final days.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary of the Visitation Parish, 16 Cooper Street, Cambridge on Saturday, January 17th at 11am.

Those who wish to make a memorial donation are asked to consider St. Mary’s of the Visitation Building Fund, the Knights of Columbus Preston Council, or a charity of their choosing.

EVANS, Douglas Arther Evans - Obituary | Print |

EVANS, Douglas Arther -

Evans_DouglasWe are saddened to announce the passing of Douglas Arther Evans, age 72, after a courageous battle with cancer. Doug passed away peacefully at home, on January 12, 2015.

Born October 12th, 1942, and raised in Stratford, Ontario, Doug taught primary school for many years at Juliet and Elma Township public schools before becoming principal of Hamlet and Central Perth public schools.

After his retirement he took up his secret hobby of painting. He would meet every Thursday with the 'Group of Five' members at the Kiwanis Club to trade painting techniques. He also dabbled in lapidary, which is ironic for a guy who wore no jewelry whatsoever. He just liked to make some nice pieces for the girls in the family.

Best of all, he loved golfing and was an active member of the Stratford Country Club. He liked nothing more than to make bets on the golf course and was never more proud than when his grandson, Zac, took up the sport.

At home Doug could often be found in his 'nest'- his recliner chair - doing the crossword, Suduko or reading a novel. He also enjoyed his get togethers with the 'Poker Guys' and his many wonderful friends and often commented how they solved all the world's problems.

Doug leaves behind his loving wife, Lynda (Crawford), his two daughters and their families: daughter Tracy, son-in-law Zo Ammoury, and two grandchildren, Sophie (11) and Zac (9) as well as daughter Shannon, son-in-law Paul Dykstra, and two 'grand-dogs' Ruby and Beatrice. Surviving are his sisters Ferne Westrick, Pat Kinkade and Betty Chandler, his mother-in-law Zella Crawford and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Tom and Grace Evans, two brothers, Ken and Bill as well as sister-in-law Carol (Bill) and brother-in-law Bill (Ferne). Doug was also blessed with so many true friends.

The family would like to thank CCAC, OneCare, E-Shift and VON (especially his favourite nurse Laura Hawkins) for taking such good care of Doug at home. Words cannot express our heartfelt gratitude to all of our friends, neighbours and family who also supported us with visits, kind words, hot dinners, shovelled driveways and shoulders to cry on through Doug's illness.

Doug wasn't keen on having a funeral service. Instead he wished you all to toast his final tee-off for his departure to 'the big golf course in the sky' at The Stratford Country Club this coming summer.

Donations can be made to the Southwest CCAC (Community Care Access Centre), Wellspring Stratford or Stratford General Hospital .

NICKERSON, Harold Douglas 'Nick' Nickerson - Obituary | Print |

NICKERSON, Harold Douglas 'Nick' -

It is with broken hearts we acknowledge the passing of Nick at Toronto General Hospital on January 12, 2015 at the age of 68 years, after a valiant battle with liver cancer and ultimately an unsuccessful liver transplant.

Left to grieve by his wife Wendy Callaghan, his soul mate of 42 years.

Remembered dearly by his children Lisa Nickerson of Pickering, Cherise Flemming (Joe) of Pickering and their sons Joshua, Nicholas & Benjamin, also by his girls’ mother Lori Nickerson. Dear brother of Dane Paquet and his brother Jeffery Nickerson (Betty).

Nick will be forever remembered by Wendy’s sister Karen Miller (Gary) of Waterloo and their children, his beloved nephews Brent (Darus) of Calgary and Shane (Melissa), their children Keegan & Peyton, also his nephew Daniel (James) of Kingston. Predeceased by his parents Ken & Thelma Paquet and his sister Heather Adams (Daniel’s mother).

Nick was an original, one of a kind, a big man with a heart to match. He was old school. He loved to ski, fish, snowmobile, boating and of course his classic cars. He lit up a room, with his huge presence, witty and humorous, and we shall miss his forever talking. He was a forester, house builder, and auto mechanic. He could do it all. He loved to learn about astronomy and we are sure he is that new big bright star in the night sky.

He loved and was truly loved by all his friends, in particular John Rumbelow an old childhood friend, and all his family. Till we meet again Nick. 'It’s closing time.'

Cremation has taken place and a road trip is planned with Daniel, Dane, James & Wendy to inter his cremated remains beside his grandfather and his sister in P.E.I.  A celebration of life will take place at a later date.

Donations may be made to Toronto General Hospital (Organ Donor Program).

'You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.'
