FRICKER, Austin Fricker - Obituary | Print |

FRICKER, Austin -

On November 6, 2014, at the age of 80, at his home in Waterloo, Ontario, surrounded by family, as he had wished.

He was an accountant by training at Clarkson Gordon and a financial executive at Canada Permanent Trust, Guaranty Trust and Mutual Life, but at heart Austin was a kid with an impish grin, a touch of mischief, and a love of music and travel and wine and golden retrievers and family. He was in every sense a companion on the road of life to Lois, his high school sweetheart and wife of 57 years. He was a wise and immensely proud dad to Cathy DesBrisay (and husband Hugh) and Michael (and wife Karen). He was a fun-loving and thoroughly enthralled grandfather to Claire, Amy, Andrew and Emma. A mentor to many, Austin was a collector of friends from school, work, neighbourhood and family – friends with character; lifelong friends; people whose company he adored and all of whom were drawn to that twinkle in his eye, his immense sense of fun and his wise counsel. A man who gave back to his community throughout his life; a kind, gentle man and a true gentleman, Austin will be missed by many.

A tribute to a life well-lived will take place in time, when those who loved him most have decided that the time and place is right for a gathering.

For those inclined, a donation in Austin’s memory may be made to the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, a choir directed by his grandfather and whose music he adored or to Canadian Mental Health Association, where he volunteered for many years and whose work inspired him.

Jane will be missed by her many friends at the Stratford Duplicate Bridge Club where she was an excellent bridge player with Ruth as well as president for many years. Jane was a lover of animals, an admirer of her gardens but loved her cottage the most. She was known for her dry sense of humour, her ability to befriend almost anyone through conversation and her love of Rod Stewart and his music. She was always thankful for great neighbours which she seemed to have wherever she lived. Although the Early Onset Alzheimer's Disease socially altered her, she never lost the ability to laugh and make friends, even helping staff and fellow residents at Hillside Manor where she has resided for the past 3 years.

Cremation has taken place and a private funeral will be held. All who knew her are invited to a celebration of Jane's life at the Festival Inn, Stratford on November 16, 2014, 2-5 p.m. Because Mom adored the colour green feel free to remember her by wearing something green to the celebration as well as bring a story about Jane to put in her book.

Donations may be made to the Stratford Perth Humane Society, Alzheimer's Society or a charity of your choice.

RAE, Kathryn -

Rae_KathrynWith deep sadness the Rae family announces the passing of Kathryn Rae at home, surrounded by the love of family and friends, on November 6, 2014. Born in Kirkland Lake to the late Alexander and Kathleen Taillon.

Kathryn is survived by her beloved husband David, sons David (Monique), Michael (Tina) and Ian (Sandra); much loved grandchildren David, Devin, Aidan, Anika and Amelia; and brother Peter.

After graduating from the University of Western Ontario, Kathryn moved to Stratford and immediately became involved in the life of the community – especially Gallery Stratford, the Stratford Festival and Stratford City Council, on which she served as councilor for 15 years. Kathryn enjoyed people and connected with everyone she met. Travelling in Europe with friends, family time at the cottage on Lake Muskoka and Spring on Hilton Head Island brought her great joy. After the diagnosis of melanoma 10 years ago she carried on her life with great strength and endurance.

Special thanks for Kathryn's care should go to Dr. Laurel Moore of Stratford and Dr. David Hogg of Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto, as well as the wonderful care team at the Victorian Order of Nurses.

There will be a Mass to celebrate Kathryn's full life at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church (Stratford) on Wednesday, November 12, at 11 a.m.
