While attending Algonquin College, the far north called again when Bob spent four summers working as a member of a survey crew during the construction of the Dempster Highway across the Arctic Circle from Dawson City to Inuvik. He had a great passion for aviation and at one time was a member of the Ottawa Flying Club. Bob spent his entire work career with the Department of National Defence at the Defence Research Establishment Ottawa (now Defence Research and Development Canada). During those years, Bob and his colleagues made numerous trips to Halifax and Esquimalt to install and test equipment on navy destroyers in preparation for field trials. Bob finished his career in Radar Countermeasures working in the anechoic chamber setting up and testing experimental antenna configurations. Bob loved the work that he did but his priority was always his family. He loved us and cared for us with great devotion. STRAUS, Margaret (Dietrich) Straus - Obituary | Print |

STRAUS, Margaret (Dietrich) -

Straus_MargaretMargaret Straus died peacefully on Monday November 3, 2014 at St. Mary’s General Hospital after a brief illness at the age of 83. Margaret was born in Carrick Township on August 29, 1931 to Joseph Dietrich and Catherine Weiss.

She married the love of her life, Eugene Straus, on August 19, 1950 at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Mildmay, Ontario. For the next 64 years they worked together as they raised their three sons and six daughters in the St. Agatha area.

Marg is the beloved mother of Gloria and Len Henhoeffer, Marilyn and Jim Henhoeffer, Lewis and Anne Straus, Russell and Linda Straus, Carol and Roy Decaire, Cathy and Paul Henhoeffer, Barb and Dave Heppler, Joseph (deceased 2008) and Angela Straus and Marg and Steve Feeney. Mom took great pride in remembering the names and birthdates of her 34 grandchildren and her 66 great-grandchildren. She enjoyed their visits and loved each and every one of them. Marg is predeceased by all of her siblings, her son Joe and a great-granddaughter. We will cherish our memories of mom as her legacy lives on in the many hearts she has touched over the years.

Margaret was a lifetime member of the St. Agatha Church CWL. Her hands were often busy quilting, sewing, crocheting, canning, cooking, baking birthday cakes for her many grandchildren, and playing solo.

Marg’s family gives many thanks to her caring medical team at St. Mary’s General Hospital, and the hard working staff at both Columbia Forest Nursing Home and Lanark Retirement Home. We would also like to express our gratitude to Mom’s special friend Irene Detzler and to Carole Toushan for the love and friendship they have shown to our Mom.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Agatha Roman Catholic Church, 1839 Notre Dame Dr., St. Agatha on Thursday, November 6 at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Daniel Lobsinger C.R. as Celebrant. Interment at the St. Agatha Roman Catholic Cemetery will immediately follow the Mass. All are welcome to a reception and a time of fellowship at St. Agatha Community Centre following the graveside service.

Donations in Marg’s memory to the Alzheimer Society or to the St. Agatha Church Building Fund would be appreciated by the family.
