STRIDE, Doris (Norman) Stride - August 12, 1929 - July 30, 2021
(age 91) Born to Naomi (Rideout) and Thomas Norman in Pacquet, a fishing outport on the north-eastern coast of Newfoundland.
Doris was known as someone you could rely on to help in any situation: from helping her mother with younger siblings, to salting and drying the cod that her father and brothers caught.
At the age of 18 she moved to St. Anthony and resided at the Grenfell Hospital to be with her younger sister Daphne, who had contracted tuberculosis.
During her time in St. Anthony she trained as a nursing assistant and helped with Daphne’s care until her sister’s death in January, 1947.
In spite of offers to stay and work at the Grenfell Hospital or gain training as a midwife, Doris felt the need to leave Newfoundland and see more of the world.
She travelled to Toronto in 1951 and found a position in the Operating Room at the Toronto General Hospital.
Soon afterward mutual friends introduced her to Harvey, also from Newfoundland, and they were married in 1953.
Harvey and Doris were married for 64 years. Ahead of her years, Doris balanced family life and full-time work at General Electric and Chromalox.
She was an inspiration to her children and all who have known her as an incredibly strong, resilient, loving woman guided all her life by her faith in God, and for whom family always came first.
Doris died peacefully, at her home in Uxbridge, surrounded by her family.
She is survived by her children Sandra (William Capill), Linda (Blair Webb), Chris (Stella Kokoros Stride) and Wanda (John Futhey). She is sadly missed by her grand-children Jennifer Fabro (Jason Sooley), Michael Fabro (Erin Dilkes Fabro), Catie Futhey, Sam Futhey and Emma Webb, as well as great-grandchildren Lennox, Arden and Vaughn Fabro. Doris is pre-deceased by her husband Harvey; brothers Heber, Horace, Heman, Gid, and Herbert Norman; sisters Gwendolyn and Daphne Norman.
A private Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday August 4th at Low & Low Funeral Home in Uxbridge, and livestreamed via Zoom.
