Somann RolfSOMANN, Rolf Olaf - (3 February, 193520 July, 2019)

Rolf Olaf Somann will be missed beyond words by his wife Gerhild (nee Lindthaler), his children Eva (Lyle), Uta (David) and Heiko (Lynda), step-daughter Claudia (John) and his grandchildren.

Rolf also leaves behind brothers Horst and Gert (Alice), his cousin Christel and extended family in Canada, Germany and Austria.

Rolf was predeceased by his parents Herbert Oskar Wilhelm Somann and Kaete Minna Berta (nee Doepking), his first wife Margot (nee Santelmann) and sisters-in-law Helga and Christiane Somann.

Forever young at heart with a wonderful sense of humor, Rolf derived immense joy from his grandsons Taylor, Daniel and Luke; when still quite young, they loved to challenge their Opa at chess and he cherished sharing in their many activities over the years.

Rolf was born on February 3, 1935 in Hamburg, Germany, where he was trained in tool and die design. He immigrated to Canada in 1957.

With his gift for visualizing three-dimensional design, he spent 43 years in the tool and die/metal stamping industry. He became the go-to problem solver for a variety of industries, including the automotive sector. Many entrepreneurs came to him with theirs ideas, which he helped them to bring to production.

Rolfi was a man of many talents. He was born to swim, kayak, scuba dive, hike, ski and canoe, in his later years, on the French River. He loved most of all to be on the water and for years was an avid sailor and boater, exploring the 1,000 Islands and Georgian Bay. He loved music and opera, to dance and travel. He also indulged in gardening and was happiest outdoors where he truly felt at home.

With the move to Ballantrae he also learned to play snooker, a game he immensely enjoyed and played equally well with both hands; during all seasons he explored the endless trails of the York Region Forests. He cherished his time at John and Claudia’s farm ‘Bridge of Dreams’ over the last three decades and their boundless hospitality in their circle of friends and relatives.

Rolf will be remembered for his easy-going and fun loving nature and many talents, but foremost for the joy he brought to all his family and friends.

During the last two and a half years while Rolf valiantly battled Alzheimer’s Dementia and the ravages that ended his life, Gerhild received steadfast and heartwarming support from Eva and Heiko.

With the pledge of ‘Our love will lighten our way,’ over the last four years Gerhild devoted her life to the care of her beloved soulmate Rolfi. Warm appreciation for their care and support goes to the Southlake Residential Care Village, their dedicated Care Team, Dr. Gajan Ethan Krishna and Dr. Rhea Uy.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society of York Region, Southlake Residential Care Village or a charity of your choice would be most appreciated by Gerhild and family.

Friends may gather at the Jerrett Life Celebration Centre, 8088 Yonge St, Thornhill (south of Hwy 7) on Friday, August 2nd from 11am until time of service at 12pm.
