Van Laethem DionVAN LAETHEM, Dion R.E. - August 21, 1931 – January 26, 2020 - Dion passed away peacefully in Toronto, surrounded with the love of his family.

Dion Van Laethem, 88 years old, the beloved husband of Kathelijn (Kathy) Van Laethem (née Van Acker), loving father of Marleen, John (Gisèle Clignett), and their daughter Madeleine, and Bill (Michelle Dookheran).

He was predeceased by his parents Jan Van Laethem and Elza De Beurme, his brothers Germain and Willy, sister Eliane, and brother-in-law Flor (Leemans).

Also missed by his sisters-in-law Lydia (Bergé) and Lily (Dobbelaere) and his father’s second wife Astrid (De Pandelaere) and nieces and nephews.

Also missed by Kathy’s sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.

After graduating in chemical engineering (Louvain, Belgium) and doing his mandatory army service, Dion started his career in Sint Jan’s Hospital (Bruges, Belgium). He then had an opportunity to work in New York, which led to going to Pittsburgh and then Toronto where he enjoyed working as a clinical chemist for 32 years at St. Michael’s Hospital.

The camaraderie with his colleagues brought him much laughter and fun. He loved Canada and especially the lakes and forests of cottage country.

Cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles, Newbigging Chapel, Toronto for a celebration of his life at 1:00 p.m. Friday January 31st. A reception will be held from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the Rosedale Room, same location.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chester Village Long Term Care Home, Parkinson’s Society, St. Michael’s Hospital or the charity of your choice.
