MARIANI, Gracia Aarne Genabe Bernardino - It is with great sadness that our tenacious, strong-willed, caring, loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, niece, cousin, Tita/Aunt, Lola/Great-Aunt, sister-in-law Aarne (Nene) Mariani has passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2020 at 7:45AM. She was 60 years old.
Aarne was born in Camp Crame, Quezon City, Philippines on November 4, 1959. She studied at St. Scholastica’s Academy then transferred to Pola Central School, where she graduated a Valedictorian (giving her valedictory address under the mango tree).
She studied high school at Roosevelt College, and she was a Lt Junior Grade at the school’s Reserve Officers’ Training Corp (ROTC), where she learned how to disassemble and assemble an M16 rifle in a record time. She attended the University of the East, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Secretarial Education and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.
She worked at various offices in the Philippines such as CIS (Meralco) and Land Bank of the Philippines, with her aunt Ofelia. She was working while finishing her bachelor degrees.
In 1987, she migrated to Canada and right away started working for an agency in order to help the family. As can be seen by the many co-workers she had, she worked at Ministry of Health (MOH), Treasury Board Secretariat (TBS), Ministry of Transportation (MTO), to name a few. She even applied at the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), although she did not get the job, we know that she would have been an asset to that office.
Aarne was a very loving and caring wife and mother. She always put her family first yet she was able to pursue her goals of career growth and fulfillment. These things filled her life and made her happy. She always found time for family and friends no matter how near or far. The lengths that she went to maintain these bonds have made them much closer. Striving for perfection on all fronts embodied her essence and if you tried to get away with half measures, she would let you know it. But above all, Aarne was deeply empathetic and would always be there for her friends and family.
I think everyone knows Aarne’s love for food, fashion, shopping, and travel. This is evident from the many clothing, shoes, places she has visited and the various trips to different restaurants with friends and family.
Aarne is predeceased by her father Segundino Bernardino and her niece Shilo.
She is lovingly survived by her husband Alex; her children Luke and Casey; her mother Luningning Bernardino; her siblings Arnold, Arline Aaron (Julita), Ariadne (Mike), Arthur, Armin (Rowena) and Araceli (David); her nieces and nephews Ron Dihno, Jenzo (Daniel), Don Qarlo, Armin, Kirsten, Khyle, Rafael, Max Cornel, Caitlin and Michael; her great nieces and great nephew Audrina, Aiden and Mya and her many Godchildren and other extended family members, friends and colleagues around the world.
The family wishes to sincerely thank Pina, nurse Rose, Rachelle, and Baby Bernardino for their hard work, compassion and kindness during Aarne’s final weeks.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Thank you
